I'd say you are right about it, except for the years of experience. I been doing it for maybe about 8 years and i think its all about intimate knowledge of the machine you're using. I use TDI and GMT. I dig all targets, whether i know its iron or not. I had gold nugget sitting under a piece of steel wire. I had 30+ year exp prospectors tell me that theres no gold in certain areas, and i found gold in there. Anyways, you have proven my point - you know your machine really good, and thats why you're successful. Good luck in the fields!
#1 Best lesson with the TDI, High GB signal = Higher GB# and vice versa. I remember when I first got the TDI. 1hr, 50 min drive, 30 mins of hiking up to a bare area on google map and 6 Hours later I had 113g of gold in California. Some of the nuggets were (what I later learned they were called) 'Sun bakers', sitting on top of bedrock and the surrounding dirt and eroded rock had just washed and wind blown away. I was so excited and tired after 6 hours on the way home I had to stop on the side of the road and double check that they were actually gold and not something else, LOL.
Hey, DB, thanks so much for this instruction. I like the fact that it's clear, concise and understandable. And that's from someone who has a considerable learning difficulty. Thanks so much.
No, I never did make any more. I always meant to but things kept coming up; health issues, death in family, retired from working full time, all sorts of things. I did do a short little thing on target recovery for Whites and it was on their web site for awhile but not sure if its still there. I still may, Whites has been bugging me to. Now that fall is here, hoping I can.
I'm looking to get me a tdi very soon and was wondering a few things .not like it's going to change my mind in getting one.great demonstration and awesome gold .
I really learned how to use the TDI Pro on the beach this summer and really learned the fine nuances of the machine. Funny thing was that I also irritated alot of Minelab detectorist (they are like a cult). Nice to re-watch this video and YES, SLOW DOWN and pick your areas of search wisely.
The Pro will go a little deeper, but not as much as some would have you believe under actual field conditions. Drawbacks to the SL is battery life and non chest mountable. These can be overcome with a little pre-planning. Max gain in almost all ground conditions and a smooth, stable threshold. That really is the key for the pros. The amatuers really don't understand how important that is.
Yes, I'm still out there digging up gold. I've slowed down considerably lately but keep meaning to do some more videos. I lost everything I owned in the Camp Fire in 2018 and am still trying to recover from that. Probably will move to Nevada soon as California has become a communist armpit.
I know this is an old vid but people think air tests are invalid. No they gtve a relative idea. As for ground tests I have seen a certain size and depth in undisturbed ground where a GTX 5000 beats a GPZ 7000. I've seen another vid in the field where the 5000 also beat the 7000. On a hundred ounzer at a meter or more you know who the winner will be. All is relative. 4 feet in air is going to find a lot deeper in the ground than 3 feet in air. End of story. I've been a pro for thirty years with thousands of nuggets in the bank. The TDI is a great machine able to find more gold in hotrock country even though it's gota a slightly shallower in air test. However it's got the all function that the 5000 doesn't and it can discriminate out small annoying junk.
good video. about actions that's all well and good... a veteran knows to dig all the targets... I've seen a prospector on UA-cam describe a gold nugget ringing as a bad target. I can't reference it but it's there. he knew he's in a gold area dug it and wow he surprised himself... rang as a bad target...
You mean a pick? The brand is Walco, made in Australia. I'm not sure they are still made but a check around some of the major dealers in Arizona, Nevada, California could get you one. I think at one time Arizona Outback carried them.
Someone asked where I got the hood ornament of the man panning that mounted on my quad. I got that at one of the gold and treasure shows that are put on around the country, usually by the GPAA. There are vendors there selling all sorts of accessories and trinkets.
Well, I tried to post a response here but it doesn't seem to have posted. Briefly, all mono loops will work with any of the TDI's. Basic difference between all of them? Circuitry is the same, depth is comparable. The SL has the smoother threshold allowing for easier hearing of the weak, deep signals. Smaller and lighter. It's my "go to" machine. I've gotten 3 dwt in the last two weekends in a hunted out spot.
Yep, the GMT or any VLF detector would scream on those little nuggets. But it would also scream on those hot rocks with no way to eliminate them. Nor would you be able to get a loop within a foot of the serpentine ground.
Are you the Digger Bob on the news as of late? About the possibility of Gold in them thar hill at Orville Dam? That is awesome! I live way south of there, but good video and just curious, why did you spill the beans! LOL...JK. I love metal detecting. I haven't been in ages, but you have peaked my interest again. Keep on Diggin' Bob. (I subscribed :-)
Yes, that's me. I only did it because it was already out there. Hundreds of people were already thinking the same thing. Make no mistake, the DWR doesn't know what they are talking about. And their employees know all about the gold on that bedrock too. But they aren't talking.
Sorry for the late response. Yes, that's me on the news. As far as the Oroville Dam situation, well many people know about the possibility of gold in the dirt and the exposed bedrock. But the powers that be have, and will for a long time, keep everyone away from the area, even after the repairs are finished. They are stating "national security" and "public safety".
a little late seeing this, but : yes it will work at salt water beaches both dry and wet sand but DON"T try using it underwater, it is NOT a submergible detector [ the coil can be underwater - i use it at low tide and have had ocassion to put it in water with no problem ]
I wish I could say, as I've never been there. From what I understand, the ground conditions there are why they developed the TDI Pro. The SL is much more forgiving in our conditions, quieter and lighter, but the with extreme mineralization you have over there, you might be better off with the Pro. The Pro's extra ground balance capability is not necessary here in 99% of areas.
The settings are explained in the video I believe. Pulse always at 10, Gain at Max, ground balance usually around 8 or 9, depending on the conditions, frequency usually in the middle.
Digger, at about 3 min on the vid you show the nugget responding louder with a down sound when the pulse delay is too high [ 10 ] so what is wrong with that as opposed to a high sound if you can hear it better ? is that because you could mistake the signal for a bad target ?
That's a hot rock, the basalt I believe. A nugget won't change from a high to a low sound if you increase the pulse delay. What it will do is gradually disappear. So, be careful when using this technique. Now, if the nugget is big enough, usually 1/4 oz or larger, you will get a low sound rather than a high sound. The conductivity of larger targets changes.
thank you - i absolutely love my SL - and btw i have NO issues with the life of batteries in my SL; i was using Energizer Lithium Ion regular - and now, better yet, i use Panasonic Rechargable Eneloop Black Pro 2550 mAh [ White Eneloops last longer with charging { 1000 Charges } but the mAh is less ] there is a Metal Detector dealer here in Vancouver who uses the White Eneloops and is still using [ recharging ] the same ones for 10 yrs now ! i kid you not and my Eneloop Black Pro have been in my SL for almost 3 weeks now and still going - they are listed at 500 charges but the Battery store here says they will charge as many times { 1000Xs } as the White Eneloops in his experience [ i usually use my Whites Dual Field at the beach but wanted to try the Eneloops in my SL - i beach hunt almost every day about 3 hrs a day ] anyway, appreciate your videos and response - again, thank you .
Digger, I watched the Bone-Heads Video which is MIS-Leading &jith TOO much Internet Koolaide drank * You don't hunt with the loop stationary and slide gold in tubes at various angles * To be fair, the TDI Pro does have extended ground balance range to deal more efficiently with the difficult mineralization of OZ but SL QUIETER. * The TDI SL- uncanny secondary threshold when used with premium Headphones will perfform deeper in many cases * USE Whites APPROVED LOOPs like Digger 14 and NEW 4x6

I just got the AW-2200 long life battery for the whites. It is Lithium Ion, lasts twice as long as the factory battery, and weighs less!

Very Nice Detector, Think I might get one but will it work here in Victoria, Australia with our ground conditions?

Hello! I am from Spain where I could buy a peak like the one you carry?
Thank you
Wow.. are you still digging? No video posts in years... hope all is well.
Hey Bob, I know this is old, but did you ever make anymore TDI Videos?
hello whtas the tdi setings you use ? pulse and gound sens?
The settings are explained in the video I believe. Pulse always at 10, Gain at Max, ground balance usually around 8 or 9, depending on the conditions, frequency usually in the middle.
I am still loving my TDI SL. Just made a vid on making your own 5 gal bucket gold classifier also.. check it out on my LOFRECO channel.

Digger, hate to tell you,but the SL will pick up your atv--even at that distance.
