As a small business operator in this country I find it repugnant that a public servant would be paid $800k. People in government and the public service are clueless to real world issues and realities. It is an insult to those of us in small business that battle each day with the rising costs, including taxes and government over reach (bureaucracy and compliance red tape). The flagrant disregard these people have for spending taxpayers money is reprehensible. Kerry Packer was spot on. It’s no wonder people try and dodge the “system “ , when there is no incentive to try and get ahead. The public service needs to be reduced each year to a more acceptable level.

This is supposed to make sure they retain the best people for the job and won't lose them to the private sector. $845,650 total remuneration a year???????? WOWEEEEEEE! Grab a calculator everyone! That's $2,316 A DAY! 365 days a year!!!!! That's over $16,000 a week! What planet is the person living on who determines these wages?

Either you’re lying because it’s an obscene amount, or you’re honest and you make so much, you don’t have to even budget what you pay for. Both answers are unacceptable for public servants.

Let’s halve their pay - they won’t notice and why shouldn’t they have to live off a salary near what everyone else gets? To lead effectively they need to fully appreciate the challenge of the people they lead…. Maybe they’d be less inclined to make stupid decisions

Honestly, for the work they do to be paid that much is ridiculous, how is the average Australian getting their money's worth out of these highly paid MP's? She could essentially buy a house every year if she wanted to while her partner pays for living expenses. She may actually not know her salary because there's always money there in her account ready to be spent on whatever she likes and making ends meet is not a concern. Then of course we have Philip Lowe (RBA) advising us working Australians should try sub-letting so we can pay rent to get by.
