The best recording of this work, which was written at the age of 21 and yet sounds like the reflections of an old man.
As long as I live I'll never forget his performance of this piece. Someone has said the tempos are slow! Only because he can afford it... for us, who heard him play this live, the notes came like arows straight to our hearts, such was the intensity every single note was played! Just unforgetable and also impossible to describe...
oh man cerebral, what a performance with such magnanimous character and valliant heart, heroic!

Michelangeli ha proposto in pubblico un repertorio limitato ma ognuno dei brani eseguiti rappresenta un punto di riferimento inarrivabile e comunque ineludibile.

Tiefempfundene live Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Balladen im gut phrasierten Tempo mit klarem Anschlag und völlig effektiver Dynamik. Ganz unbegreiflich im 21. Jahrhundert!

Im 21. Jahrhundert wird nichts mehr begriffen. Man kann nur noch wehmütig zurückblicken, um sich aus dem heutigen gesamten Verfall zu retten.

Much more expressive than Gould’s version...real passion here and bringing out the melody line, for example, in the last Ballade

Tempi are pretty slow. I prefer more passion when playing Brahms.

Heard the wrong note (I'm not a musician, but did) and feel lucky as ABM didn't stop his performance and throw all the record away! Let's hope he didn't be hurt too much by himself. I personally am so glad he could get wrong like every human being and accept it! ;)

1st ballade is too slow; nice tone and articulation of chords -- making them sound more stark. but the pace drags. Rubinstein is better.
I'm so happy to are the fountain of wisdom on such things. I can relax now.
Do you know what the 1st ballade is about? Do you know who Edward is or what he has done? Did you read Herder? If no, maybe reserve judgment on the “right” tempo.
I was lucky enough to hear ABM play these pieces live... I tell you, he takes the tempo "too slow", as you say, because he can afford it! What we heard that evening was an unforgetable miracle as long as we live!
