The Kybalion serves as kind of a gateway drug for people who are unfamiliar with hermetic and esoteric traditions. It has value in that context as most people that dive head first into the source material will be completely bewildered and overwhelmed.

Kybalion was the first time I even heard of Hermeticism and was the book that led me to the real texts. I look back and kind of shake my head at some of the material but if it was not for that book I might never have looked deeper into Hermeticism. I must thank the Kybalion for opening me up to Hermes Trismegistus and later the many books that expanded on Hermeticism. It is almost like a test for those who only scratch the surface and do not dig deeper to find the truth.

I got disagnosed with bipolar disorder a few years ago, but I found much of the Kybalion and other occult and witchcraft books helpful, specifically the idea of "All is mind" because it gave me this idea that I have more control over my own mind than I originally thought, and I took control of my thoughts, mental anguish and emotions... and... I decided, consciously, that I will no longer be depressed. I started doing meditative rituals in which I kind of...brainwash myself? Id aggressively hyper-focus on whatever memory or intrusive thought was trying to invade my life, and expose it to myself for its pettiness and villainy, and then reach a hand up to my head, and pull the pain out of my brain, evicting it from my body, and I decide it no longer has power. I havent had a debilitating depressive episode or hypomanic episode in over a year, because every time mental anguish starts I just focus, and pull it out.

The Kybalion introduced me to the concept of polarity and vibration and the plane of the mind. Every day now when I deal with negative mental spaces, I use the law of polarity to change that through meditation. It's been a game changer in my life and my ability to handle stress.
I see the kybalion as valuable at the very least.

Thanks. I think for this one it's because I spent 4 hours recording, and then had radio signals invade my microphone (a la synth pedal) for speaking out against the Vibrations. Pop songs and commercials ruined the first recording, then I had to rerecord everything a second time on the same day having spent all morning practicing, so by that point I had most of the talk memorized. I also wrote this myself (rather than reading some guy's writings from the 19th century) so it was a bit easier.

I've been interested in the Kybalion and also Freke and Gandy's book, "The Hermetica." I've also read Robert Collier's book, "The Secret of the Ages," which clearly was reproduced as "The Secret." I see where the metaphysical law ideas of the time and place have been revisited now again, 100 years later. And I get the fact that they don't strictly represent the ancient source material in a blanket or complete way. Your points are true enough.
But I have read enough of the primary source material of the Egyptian traditions to understand that pantheistic concepts did exist back then, here in the west. My interest has been in looking at western pantheistic ideas and concepts that parallel the eastern pantheistic concepts of Vedic tradition. Someone has called the Hermetic Tradition, "Western Taoism." And I like the sound of that. I like the general idea of having an equally ancient pantheistic tradition here in the west to stand beside eastern pantheistic philosophy. Because here in the west we have people leaving monotheistic religion and then facing foreign traditions as the alternative. Meanwhile, we have this ancient Hermetica here. Which has provided a common mystical environment for mystics from the three dominant western religions. Hermetic Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
I've been seeking people who are considered Hermetic initiates, or the closest thing to it. To discuss this with. And that brought me here to this channel. Can we discuss this further?

This video was great and raises even more questions. I also first came across the Kybalion in my early twenties but I never had any background in philosophy, just a Christian upbringing and some interest in Japanese philosophers, but I found it online originally through paranormal image boards after being homeless for a short time. Hermeticism and magic were transformational subjects for me during those times and so the interest carried on. The Kybalion to me seemed like practical guide given the short length and the way it is organized into sections. But now, I lean more towards the idea that it's not Hermetic, however, I still have appreciation for it anyways despite never getting into New Thought. I didn't know that Atkinson was the author of it but that makes sense.

I believe that the Kybalion is sometimes underestimated by certain intellectuals. Despite its apparent simplicity, this work has the potential to sow seeds of deep reflection in the minds of those who may not have had the opportunity to study at prestigious universities or tackle complex philosophical works. The quest for truth and the divine should be accessible to everyone, and there are multiple paths to achieve it.
The interpretation given to the *Kybalion* is often overly academic, attributing intentions to the author that may not align with their actual purpose. Each person follows a unique path toward the truth, and this work can inspire readers in a distinct way, unbound by traditional academic norms.

I always thought it was obvious the book was modern and written by Theosophists, who clearly drew upon various sources to create their metaphysics... Still a great book though, if you like that kind of thing.... and you arent expecting it to be ancient Hermeticism... not as ahistorical as that book from "Thoth the Atlantian"

Awesome video, so enjoyable and well put together, thank you.
For me the text is invaluable as it was a bridge between two states of being and allowed me to understand/comprehend way more about reality than i would have been able to had i not read it. The book came to me at the right time and applying the principles to my everyday life propelled me from quite a bad place to well, where i am now which is a complete transmutation of the soul when compared to the state of existence prior.
Now you bring the notion to light, it does feel very new-agey/Theosophical and not very ancient at all; but like i say the profoundly positive effect of proactively applying the principles to my life nullifies whether it is ancient or written yesterday, if it helps, it helps.
However i do agree that self-referencing is maximum cringe.
I'm going to have to go and read it again now!

All philosophies, religions and beliefs split with time and have a number of versions and groupings and its like denying Roman Catholic as non christianity. There are vesions of hindu, taoism, platoism and transcendalism. The Kybalion is another version of Hermiticism as every truth has extremes of itself on either side. Thanks for the explanation and it highlights what the Kybalion says that everything IS and ISNOT Every thesis has an antithesis.

I'm going to have to watch this video again and read the comments below, but here are some thoughts I have:
    1. There are 5 chapters on Mentalism and The All, 2 on Gender (which I think corresponds to Mercury/Hermes), 1 chapter each for Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, and Cause and Effect.
    2. The myth of Actaeon: the dogs are his thoughts which rip him to pieces, meaning don't delve into the subconscious recklesly, haphazardly or without preparation. And is Artemis a different version of the moon goddess Diana? I believe the moon is considered as corresponding to the sub-conscious mind. I got the interpretation of that myth from reading Alchemy & Mysticism, a book from a Danish museum or something like that. So, here the mind is stressed again. FYI, interesting how Actaeon is a combination of the word "act" and "aeon".
    3. Tony Kosinec from the Kabbalahinfo channel has a Q&A video every week. He was asked in a rapid fire section at the end of one of the videso: "What does the serpent in the Garden of Eden represent" His immediate response was "The ego"., the conscious mind.
    4. Eckhart Tolle and his views on the Ego.
    5. Buddhishm's view on the Ego and the universe as Consciousness.
    6. The exaltation of Hermes (the mind) above the other planets/gods in a LOT of esoteric traditions (Free Masonry, Rosicrucianism, etc.). What's up with that?
    7. And of course, Thoth (THOUGHT?) is highly revered in Egyptian mythology.
And what about the evolution of things like Kabbalah? I prefer the older stuff, for sure. I'm pretty certain that the 7 Hermetic Principles are not from this book originally. Does anyone know the originalsource or approximate time they are first put down on paper/parchment?

    • @JimKernix
      @JimKernix 2 роки тому +3

I mention all of that because you stated that mentalism was a concept in the 1800's and yet it seems to be many millennia old. That's was a main point of yours. If the snake symbolizes the ego, the deception of the ego, then what do the 2 intertwined snakes on the staff of Hermes represent. Is it the control and mastery of the conscious and subconscious mind, the 2 halves working in unison?
No replies from anyone on any of this?

I argue the substantive definition. The functionalist method may be presented in a similar fashion, yet the school of thought is different; at most, you could call it hermetically _styled_ . And nominative can be made in bad faith, or include tenets that are mutually exclusive with the substantive definition (however broad that needs be).
The only Principle other than that adopted from the Emerald Tablet that I agree with is Cause and Effect, although I believe in some _vaguely_ similar points to one or two others. Chaos is an internally contradictory concept.
Thanks for the approximately arboreal solstice holiday present, Dan!

I always thought it was kind of adorable that Hermeticism is appropriately mercurial and capricious when you actually try to sum it up for someone. Its really hard. Studying Eastern material like the Upanishads and certain Tantric ideas, and later Deleuze, actually helped me a lot in wrapping my head around Hermeticism even after I thought I had a relatively firm grasp on it.
Then I started seeing Hermetic elements in Mao's On Contradiction and was pretty sure I broke my brain.

    15:28 that is actually inaccurate.
The Kybalion explicitly introduces the concept that “The All” (which is essentially God) is outside of the universe, is not bound by any laws and is outside space and time.
So no, laws do not apply as The All is above law.
Also, I think a lot of confusion derives from the, failed, attempts of translators to grasp the actual meaning of the original text being in Ancient Greek.
I am actually Greek and I even cannot fully fathom what the Ancient Greek texts try to deliver, so the poorer English terms won’t even get close. (Note we are taught Ancient Greek in school)
For example Νους is literally the mind, but it can also mean a very intelligent and spiritual person, perception, consciousness, reasoning etc it all depends on the context and Greek being an extremely complex language (so imagine Ancient Greek) I think we literally chasing shadows in the dark here.

God=INFINITE=ETERNAL=“THE SUBSISTENT ONE.” I feel like the closest name we can give God, to the extent of human reason, is something like SUBSISTENCE; THE SUBSISTENT BEING; that which always WAS, always IS, always will BE. All living organisms are subject to the LAW OF SUBSISTENCE. This may also explain that which we call Gravity. It may also inform the causation of Motion. The Will to Survive, or The Will to Life, is essentially a “Gravitational Pull” for us humans. This may also explain our desire for convenience in survival, we come from a PRIMORDIAL SUBSISTENCE, SUBSISTENT ONE, SUBSISTENT SOURCE.
Subsistence is defined as: real being; Existence; CONTINUATION.
The Perennial philosophy may be something like a “Phenomenology of Subsistence” or “Subsistemology.” All Laws and phenomena of life being the Means of Subsistence of THE LAW=GOD=LAW OF SUBSISTENCE=THE SUBSISTENT imminent in All Things. Has anyone thought of The Trinity as a Calculus?
God The Father= Constant (non variable)
    God The Son= Independent Variable
God The Holy Spirit= Dependent Variable
    SPIRIT = FATHER (SON)
This has been the most sensible way for me to comprehend the Trinity. I’d love to hear thoughts on these ideas, I don’t know what I don’t know.

As neither are totally consistent it's very hard to say but it seems to me that the difference lies in the often subtle difference between weak pantheism and strong panentheism. The Hermetica appears to be a panentheistic work whereas the Kybalion more pantheistic although if the All exists outside of the universe (or multiverse) then it would be a work of panentheism. In Plotinus the One seems to exist externally to the Universe and emanates it so the universe is within the One and of the One but stratified.I do like the Kybalion 's idea that there's no point is asking why God made the universe as there is no answer which is why I tend to reject pandeism as it proclaims that God became the Universe but,we ask,why would an eternal God decided to want to experience the universe by becoming it.Makes no sense....well to a human at least!

36:30 Exactly. And this is why the Kybalion was promoted to me, a Roman Catholic kid poking around the occult section of the library, from youth, onward, and still now, all over UA-cam. 100 years of Anti-Christ! Yet, Christ is the same as Hermes in the role of the Good Shepherd who leads the souls of men to the wide pastures (Mithra reference) of heaven.

If I were to build a curriculum for a Hermetic Myerstery School, Grade.: O• Would be deep study of the Kybalion then read on the Emerald Tablets of Thoth along with an uncolored tarot deck from the Builders of the the Adytum where the Initiate colors each Key themself to implant the the Keys deep into the the subconscious with their own impression and creative force forming a creative - receptive force between the Builder and the Card. Along with a beginner study of the Sephiroth Yetzirah Book from Dr. Paul Foster Case. Then the initial Grade would be called Builder of the Scepter.:1^ and Meditation and introduction to Yoga ) Breath Work, Learning Energy Manipulation, Attunement) and an in depth course on the Middle Pillar Ritual would be in the curriculum. And of course an In depths meditation on Astrology and reflections on Syncretism.
The next Grade would be 3:.\~/ Builder of the Pink Sock.: The Magician is then instructed to Shoot Heroin and the Thelemic Bornless One Ritual would be performed 7 times a day the Magician would get teemed and experience Anal Prolapse many times for 12 moons. All blood, tears and semen spilled is collected and formed into cakes of Light which would be the Manna that the Magician would Subsist on. With no other formal training of Black Tantra or Kundalini or the Shells of the Qliphoth. But a Grimoire of the Typhonian O.T.O would be taught. And When the Magician tries to cross the Abyss, CHORONZON is just too powerful and the Magician then Has their psyche completely ruptured with intense Super-psychosis. It’s the Qliphoth Shell of Tiphareth, the Exact opposite of Christ-Consciousness.
In Grade 🔯*:•#•.:* Merkabah of Thoth’s Ashler : The Merkabah tries tireless to find the Holy Graal through Many Babalon and with And The secret of Odin’s Pink Sock. …

      0:16:17 Is that good enuf?
      0:17:20 No.
      0:18:03 Start drilling here...
0:24:35 Different goals. Kybalion is "product of its time" - which is... what?
      0:25:42 All is _NOT_ Mind.
This begins all theories of Psychology and its Darker Brainwashing applications. There is a sense in which this stuff is kinda true in a brute force way, but it's not "spiritual".
      0:32:45 Shifting definitions thru Time
0:33:08 What do the source docs say?
There is something here having to do with "Sovereignty" which I've also observed all around me which contradicts what most "spiritual" people say, so now I have something to work with.
0:44:09 "In God" =/= "God" New Age Thot blurs this distinction. Therefore, so do modern, unnuanced Christian apologetics.
0:45:37 (Finally! A definition of "Energy of God"!!! Thank you!)
      0:51:35 God's progeny.
      Part II:
1:01:36 Moving on to Substantive & Functionalist
1:13:42 I would suggest the word "commodification" fits here...
Speculation: Ms. Blavatsky, thru no fault of her own, prolly had to figure out how to "take her show on the road", so to speak, so as not to become captured by the obedience to a provider problem that women have been subject to for so long. So she turned some of her abilities into "services". In the East, this was at least an option, tho not necessarily normalized. In the West, this became the norm. We are still unable to escape it today. Ironically, this is the domain of Mercury...
      Part III:
      1:18:18 Nominalist
I'm guessing we're going into the "No True Scotsman" territory here...
1:22:26 Where is TK in the timeline to translations... I was gonna ask...
1:28:02 This goddam shit right here!!!
1:30:14 I was gonna ask about this too!!! LOL
It's so ironic to me that they thot this was optimism in contrast to pessimism (presumably from the Church...) because prayer is precisely considered to be the "Thot" that effects change - in a properly hierarchical way, of course - and even from the New Testament, Christians were taught to "believe" and "not doubt" when commanding x to change into y. Clearly the teachings of the Church no longer reflected this, or they were tried and they failed such that people were worn out from the disappointment. But, I don't see this New Thot thing as much of a contrast, but mostly a rebranding of the same ol' thing that came from the New Testament - only more materialistic. It amazes me how many people seem to be under some kind of spell that makes them forget the facts here...
      Conclusion:
1:37:55 Treat them as different. Do as thou wilt.
      1:43:03 !!!
      _________________________________________

      1. Substantive (Essentialist)
There is a single, continuous and identifiable tradition. A system or set of mutually reinforcing ideas that was provably passed on from mouth to ear or text to eye, unbroken from generation to generation, stretching all the way back to - at the very least - the 2nd Century A.D., if not earlier. (Also tends to be the "Religionist" approach.)
      2. Functionalist
...How our -ism may have existed at certain times and places... highlight a number of functions this -ism reliably performs. In this case, we'd have to ask, in general, 'what does an hermetic text do?' 'What role does it serve?'
      3. Nominalist
...A particular -ism does not exist until it was explicitly named. Alternatively, when it comes to something like Hermeticism, this is the position that would maintain that a work is "Hermetic", not if it contains a set of Hermetic ideas, but more precisely if it unambiguously bears the name of Hermes, or is in some way attributed to Hermes.

It may not be hermetic teaching that god is mind and spoke into existence. But its mentioned across several ancient religions the enuma elish mentions something similar ancient Egypt and its similar in the bible you could interpret it different but it sounds like to me in all 3 of these god is something unmaterial something like pure consciousness and then speaks material into existence. The idea i think in the Kybalion is everything has to existence as a thought first in a mind 🧠 and that applies to infinite mind of god as well which were a part of. Not that each person creates say mountains with theyre mind. I think this is a new age deception. So these principles at least the first one is a ancient idea.

At the 22 minute mark you mentioned how the Kybalion leaves out the concept of “gods” such as is found in the corpus hermeticum.. my question is, at this point, with a greater clarity in mind, and attention to etymology, do you not recognize that the word god didn’t exist when the CH was being stitched together? With that being the case, the appropriate concept in translation would be along the lines of “divine intelligence”, a “divine expression”. My point is, it’s a mistake to think that the Hermetists were genuinely Polytheistic. The “gods” were clearly the planets, and zodiac, and viewed objectively, these celestial energies are expressions of divinely organized intelligence. In context, both CH and SH show a theological conception of one Absolute Divinity having created a network or government of intelligences(the universe, planets and zodiac) to administrate the rule of nature. Any conception of “gods” removed from a stellar foundation is either an invention of the human mind(magical entity) or in fact, still a stellar being not recognized as such.

I define Hermeticism as the following. The culmination of the rhythm of all literature that exists and the understanding that everything that survives the test of time to the letter will be attributed to it's discovered source. The root of true artist mentality for creation, just as god created humanity down to the biology of scripture. Hermeticism captures this divine desire of creation which can be viewed in poetry such as "to be or not to be". It is a constantly flowing super rhythm in motion closer and farther depending on humanity's current recognition of it's own potential, because it is something different from humanity in totality but similar in parts or from what is considered ideal for creation. If art is not good nor does it last we can get the term 'trash art' an explanation of when farther, yet some art defines the stages of time for example the works of Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, or The Beatles. These artform can be considered superior to simpler recognition of beauty such as, the eyes, the ears, the heart. The touch of perfection things like this last when heard or seen into eternity although it is possible to lose these things with ignorance and ignorant practice. That is why we have recognized Hermetics from nature as it always was there as the methaphorical description of ontological mathematics.

I really liked the "product" but I have one single contradiction to highlight. You keep portraying God as a personalization of the higher self or mind within the physical realm yet on multitude of times you emphasising God being 'He or it'. It would be a thing and God being the aspect of Life, Light & Love He cannot be it because the nature of it is static and dead ( its a thing), therefore God is everything & all but not it. You could fix your expression by redrawing God as being, rather 'He or She'. It makes much more sense in the minds of people who already have clear mind of God being ever-permeating, personal & inter-personal intelligence.

Thanks for the content and effort - in my opinion, be it "the Kybalion nor the Hermetica.....the whole idea of esoteric writings is for a mind that has gathered enough experience through life to have and use the tool acquired in decoding esoteric content presented to an acceptable encoded state where it becomes of value to the soul and to the universe. this business of classifying information is the original and bare a signature of religion, which tends to move around in never-ending circles cultivating minimal as a result. a mind should gain access to content presented almost immediately even by just reading the title, introduction, or just a few lines as these words are very much alive and not literature. we tend to take these texts as literature whereas one should only access these contents with a clear and mature mind.
Hermetica, Kybalion even the twisted bible should be read as spiritual text, and only then would the real message behind the text present itself.
the text in the Kybalion and the Hermetica before my access was already familiar to me and most of the text was just re-confirming what I have already been inspired with as an example..
