Coincidentally one of the reasons Tomino made the original Gundam was as a metaphor for the generational divide between the older people of Japan who lived through the war and its aftermath and the younger ones who didn't.
Gundam OO and Unicorn taught me a lot about the world. The unending terrorism, war, fight for power. And at last we can't do anything but act nice with everyone. Be nice guys, don't spread hate, at least try controlling the anger.
Unfortunately, real life has people preaching, "Don't spread hate," to people who already don't spread hate. Meanwhile, the preachers ignore and defend the people who actually do spread hate. Proving that ideals depicted in fiction don't always translate well to reality.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend this series to someone that just entered the franchise. I went in without prior knowledge of the history of the series and I was very confused. Plus, the series has a deeper impact once you've seen the original trilogy and the movie, like the second time I watched Unicorn, after watching all the other series, I always had goosebumps whenever I recognized a reference.
edmond lee no problem. Normally I would say to watch ZZ Gundam as well for the sake of continuity, but what I recommended before is the minimum necessary.
Dont watch the movies for MS Gundam and Zeta, as they changed elements especially in Zeta than the series, which the Unicorn follows. Also watch 0080, MS08Th Team, and Stardust Memories as these events also tie into Unicorn
As a newer Gundam fan, this was my first experience with the Universal Century. Before watching it, I had a slight understanding of Mobile Suits, Newtypes, and the different factions. That wasn’t enough though, and most of the references were completely lost on me. But a few hundred wiki articles and videos later, I was able to understand the universe and what came before Unicorn, even though the whole Laplace subplot was still confusing. Regardless, it took my breath away, and I couldn’t stop watching. I loved this installment, and even though I wouldn’t recommend watching it like I did, it and the rest of the UC are absolutely amazing, for new and old fans. My only complaint is how heavily they leaned toward NewType abilities in the later fights. If you’re looking for a more traditional robot fighting robot experience, this is still great, although you might enjoy other installments more. Five stars all around!
Unicorn was also my first exposure to the Universal Century, but I was completely clueless as to what even Newtypes were. I had only known Innovators from Gundam 00 (😂 my first Gundam series in general). But, I think, like you, I got awestruck with the concepts and wanted to learn everything about them. Years later I have a PG Kit of the Unicorn, have every installment of the Universal Century released on Blu-Ray so far, and know some of the Mobile Suits by model numbers. It hits some people differently. I understand where you’re coming from!
Riddhe becomes a monster while he loses the few tenuous meaningful connections he had to other people. Marida becomes part of a ragtag, cobbled together family (Zinnerman, Mineva, and Banagher) and finds meaning and peace for the first time in her life.
Riddhe literally gets rejected by a girl who would rather jump out of a plane than being with him. This is just a whole new level, much worse than friendzoning someone. It's like a very polite way of saying "Can you just fk off already?" That's why when I saw the scene at 14:54, I just cracked up lol.
I was so confused about the wikipedia saying that Unicorn Gundam had 22 episodes but I only seen 7 and I thought that was the end. Basically I seen them all but a TV series is 22 episodes. That confused me but now I know why. Thank you.
This was my first Gundam anime and I loved it. It’s still my favorite after almost a year since I’ve watched it. The only other Gundam anime that I’ve watched that comes close to how much I love Unicorn is Iron-Blooded Orphans. Both had scenes that made me hyped with their music and choreography for the fights and both also had moments that made me cry like I actually knew those who died. Marida is and will always be my favorite Pilot as well as the Kshatriya being my favorite Mobile Suit but my favorite Gundam will always be the Unicorn Gundam for how much it made me interested in the series and made it my favorite anime.
Your views align with the second coming of who is known as full frontal. Even though these political views only work if there was a "new type" of human that had psionic powers.
@ODST 4 Life Yep, you cant sweep it under the rug nor give up and become a cog. I think since we can not eliminate Evil, we should control/contain/ keep it in check instead. MAybe have tournaments like in G Gundam
I am disappointed by the lack of gushing over Sawano's masterpiece. This is literally the best music he's ever written, and that's saying a lot for a legend like Sawano.
Still love Gundam Seed, Gundam Unicorn, and Gundam 00. The shows have help create me as a person on top of my parents and personal views. I do love how the shows have seen hidden flaws of humanity still in this modern day. Even as we change and stuff.
Kevin Goeltz I love unicorn. I just wish his master grade model kit looked more like he does in the obs. The psychoframe looks more pinkish instead of sparkling red.
Yeah... because the story up till now was that of Char and his exploits, everything revolves around him, so this show in terms of narrative progression is about wrapping up the loose ends left by Char dying, Char and Zeon and what happens to it Now I don't agree with the amount of magic shenanigans there are, but the general concept of organizing the slate that is the UC storyline to make it a better exposition point for the next arc of the UC universe is good, setting up for the rise of our traditional underdog charcters into positions of power and exploring the issues and problems from that side while the children from the original arcs grow up and take their own path, only to fail to differing degrees, leading to stuff like Hathaway and the continued weakening of the Federation as our original cast now in Powerful positions try to fix and eliminate stuff that made the federation so horrible yet at the same time powerful, which would lead to the Federation losing control and splitting into a multistate world like our own, letting people decide for themselves instead of trying to control things in vain from above, to stop trying to take everything into their own hands and doing what they think is right and forcing it onto others like Char, but leave it to the people choose, just like what Amuro realized
Gundam IBO taught me how to be brave to fulfill a dream you thought would only benefit yourself or your own for good but also for others too. It also taught me to realize how sacrifices even just a simple one like giving a coin to a beggar or so of how actually tragic the situation is and how to clear some of my own urges on my own sentiments and to correct it and make a good dream worth working for. It also taught me how I should appreciate any people I met and came up with a relation like being friends, family or so because I will not grow without them via the saying "No one is an Island, so get out of your cave and socialize"
I have only seen Char's Counter Attack and Gundam 0083 War in a Pocket. I just started watching it on Netflix and I have been craving a good mech series for a long long time. Unicorn is some heavy handed stuff when it comes to the political backdrop and it's main characters, just a quick web search will have you up to speed in no time. Still the political and personal motivations of the huge cast make for some heavy stuff, this is a military/political/drama with serious themes, motivations, and character development that you really need to pay attention to. The mech designs are beautiful and are extremely functional from a military design standpoint in the context of the shows universe. Great anime that takes the storytelling from the 80's/90's with modern animation techniques = a breath taking journey into the Gundam universe.
I have been binging on Gundam content the past month and Unicorn is the epitomy of all Gundam. The art direction and soundtrack are AMAZING. And the battles are so numerous and epic it completely blows all other Gundam out of the water. I saw the originals, wing, zeta, chars counter, hathaway, 0080, 0083 and some Seed and none of it imho is better than Unicorn. Although I hold a special place in my heart for the 8th MS team, probably the second best Gundam series.
If Riddhe remained this way, I would agree. Riddhe was a well meaning idealistic WASP (equivalent) who was ignorant of what his family's power and influence did to the Universal Century. Banagher's grandpa performed the terrorist attack on Laplace. Riddhe's grandfather Ricardo Marcenas had a rightwing brother who was in the Federation military. According to the novel, it was this person who ordered the attack on Laplace, specifically to change the language in the UC charter that Ricardo was behind so that the Federation would then be the all powerful "god" that's discussed when the Unicorn visits the Laplace wreckage. These were the original sins that Riddhe had to take in when he first proposed to Mineva Riddhe hoped to destroy the entire culture at once by marrying Mineva. It's like the disillusionment that many experience with politics at first. There are obvious answers but no quick solutions. It was both out of lust and a misguided sense that by at once joining the families that were responsible for the situations in Earth and Space, all their problems would be solved in a fell swoop. Mineva and Riddhe at once are given harsh lessons: Mineva has feelings for Banagher, who asked her what she wanted instead of making her into a figurehead like she had been before when she was younger. Riddhe gets rejected as well as scolded for a second time for not being broad enough with his thinking. Riddhe has a run in with the idealistic Banagher, and something to note about his attitude: he hates when Banagher's methods work. When Banagher makes an effort to come out of his mobile suit and makes frequent and persistent appeals to Loni, Riddhe sees her as a target and their circumstances as unavoidable and inescapable. Riddhe is projecting his circumstances to everyone around him. He wants and ultimately forces the outcome he wants by shooting Loni, despite her ultimately breaking down thanks to Banagher's efforts. After his newfound wisdom of protecting a corrupt system as opposed to welcoming potential chaos, Riddhe gets rejected a third time as Mineva literally decides to jump out of a plane than go with him. Of course he kills Marida. Riddhe is the realistic soldier that everyone wants Banagher to be. To repeat, Riddhe is what Banagher would be otherwise. Riddhe responds to every scenario with the realistic earnestness of a child growing up to become a soldier. He has to grow into the shoes that his government is corrupt, that his family is corrupt, that his military is corrupt, and that there is no magical solution for his problems like he had hoped when he decided to take Mineva to Earth. And everyone that he senses is telling him he is wrong, starting with Mineva and ending with his foil, the immature and idealistic Banagher. And then Riddhe shoots Marida and at once sees her, the way that Banagher did, without misconceptions, as only a Newtype can. He has an epiphany. He didn't believe in the person he was wanting to protect. He weeps for the harm he has caused, with full understanding, knowing he can never make it up. I would have cried too. I don't understand the hate for Riddhe. He is a believable earnest soldier who discovers that the world he thought existed and defended is full of crap and will never get better. He tries to get behind this mindset the best he can, and tries so hard to be realistic. He grows up and ascends quickly in the Banshee. Somehow instead of growth we demand protagonists do not experience missteps along their path. People would prefer heartless badasses than the noble people we preach to our children to be like, who argue to be fair even when it's hard and that every life is sacred. The first time Banagher called this out I respected his character. When Riddhe broke down after killing Marida, I respected his growth. I am in the minority here though.
Actually, I don’t look his character that way. I see that as the tiniest misbehavior can lead toward this kind of situation. It’s the most useless fight ever, but it’s possible.
Unicorn's design reminds me a bit of the Tallgeese from Gundam Wing when it's in it's normal state. I saw a few episodes, and I didn't mind them, but I couldn't get into it simply because it's late at night and I have to work.
*SAVED love the intro and the review...hope you could do a top 10 ms list for each timelines...Top 10 UC etc...continue good work Mr. Noir PS Looking forward to the first impression vid fo KR Build
Thank you very much Kevin! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I do plan on making Top 5/10's eventually. However, I don't think I'll make them THAT specific (dedicating lists to specific timelines) since I'd like to have a lot of variety. That way they'd be more fun for me and for newcomers who don't know a lot about Gundam in general. Afterall, most of my fanbase are Kaiju fans ;)
To a old gundam fan,its happy to watch those old robots from tv series or msv showing on screen, and new models are also great such as Rezel(mix blood from ZII and Methuss)
19:30 It's actually based on the psycoframe of the nu Gundam and the sazabi, that's why is a "full psycoframe" design, this is noted in the novel, manga and pretty much every piece of information of the series (dunno why this left out this), the nu and the sazabi also do "shine" but their psycoframes are tinier and in sazabi case just around it's cockpit, the nu had more but are slimmer and more hide in the Gundam frame (the gunpla nu verka show were those are).
@Ted Hodge There is isn't a canonical material anymore, since unicorn is based on CCABC which and therefore is not the same as the movie, the verka is a reinterpretation yes, but is also based on material of the CCABC (that is why the light of axis shock cover the whole unit, first not just the cockpit like in the movie and in high streamer novel).
Loved unicorn and came here to catch up on some details on the show, but a lot of spoilers from the previous series were shot out without warning, I understand it’s been decades since they released but I just started watching the original series and now the fates of certain characters ( Amuro) was instantly ruined without any warning whatsoever, I feel cheated out of that now since I just ordered the blue rays of the original movies, the video was great but I felt a spoiler warning was much needed since that wasn’t supposed to be the topic
I eh... don't want to be that guy but you forgot a few returning characters: SPOILERS: Beltorchika Irma (From Zeta) Kai Shiden (From 0079 - Zeta) Martha's connection to Melanie Hue Carbine (The moon's mayor) Amuro, Lalah as well as Char in spirit form. That's it from me!
KaijuNoir That I can really appreciate. Aside from that great review! Regarding spoilers though-, while I know it's hard to conceal Audrey Burne's identity in a small spoiler review... It might have been worth trying. 2/3 people I've gone through UC with didn't realise who she was until that one moment in episode 2, and it was glorious! I'm also glad you didn't mention a certain spoiler from the novel. The whole "the vengeful part of Char's spirit stated in the Sazabi's cockpit, so when Full Frontal was created by Anaheim using the data from the Sazabi that vengeful part of Char entered Frontal" bit. Sure, it's not explained in the anime (with words) but more through visuals and Char (the real char)'s dialogue near the end of episode 7.
The reason why I went into her backstory was that felt like it was necessary to go in-depth with her character along with the other major players. So I couldn't go into her motivation without explaining who she is and where she fits in the whole story. While it would've been interesting to have explored the "Char's enraged spirit" side of Full Frontal, I'm okay with it being told through visuals as it probably would've taken up too much time to explain such a convoluted backstory for a half modified-half possessed character. Also, I'm glad you enjoyed the review my friend!
Melanie Hue Carbine is the head of board for AE. And I do think Full Frontal is created under instruction of Minister of Defence for Zeon Republic( I am not familiar with the english name of these, sorry for that).
Beside from some OP to bullshit level weapons, and Mary Sue protagonist, I really like alot of things from the show. Aside from Banagher, every other character are well handled.
Thanks man! I can sorta see the Methuss's transformation, but the aesthetics of the mobile suit always remind me of Zeta. Also, the Gundam Wiki refers to the unit as being a mass produced version of the Zeta and even its name stands for "Refined Zeta Gundam Escort Leader."
In-story, ReZel is actually derived from *Zeta II*. Ironically, even though Zeta II is meant to be Zeta Gundam's successor, the engineers who built it opted to use a more simplified frame akin to Methuss instead of the super-complicated Zeta frame. So, it really goes like this: Methuss -> Zeta II -> ReZel. That reminds us that the name "Zeta" on a MS is not a guarantee of direct/close connection with Zeta Gundam mechanically speaking.
KaijuNoir, Androyus is right. REZEL got its transformation from methuss to save for production cost. Z+ constitutes a mass production of zeta, and Delta+ is closer to zeta since it is based on delta, a conceptual prototype for hyaku shiki and was something like a brother to zeta.
I'm quite torn on this show. I just finished watching it. 1. It is good and worth watching for Gundam fans. 2. Gorgeous visuals. I love the modern spin on the old school character designs and classic detailed combat and very thematic damage and weaponry. 3. Awesome soundtrack. Both musically and sound fx. The beams, explosions, and general mobile suit sounds are so strong and impactful. 4. I love the connection with classic Gundam though story and character tie ins. On the other hand. 5. The cast is very weak. Partially because many of them just arent good characters but even the ones that are have poor character development. 6. The writing is poor. Both the story and dialogue is not very well delivered. Which is a large factor in the trouble I had caring about any characters. 7. Way too much exposition. 8. The weird fantasy elements with how the two Gundams worked was odd. And it got worse as the series continued. The last episode was way over the top ....I got Evangelion final scene flashbacks when Unicorn and Full Frontal went on that trippy journey that ended with Full Frontals machine magically deteriorating....it was strange. Ultimately....its a good watch with amazing visuals and sound with nice Gundam fan service.....but the story and characters will confuse new Gundam fans and it doesn't give much reason to see it again.
You guys, this was my first full gundam series and I FUCKING LOVED IT. Granted, it was heavy as shit. But the whole thing was just an absolute *MWAH* (chef's kiss) mastapiece. I can't wait to watch more Gundam. I might even start from the og series. Fuck it. Why not? What a show.
It's a great series but I could have done without the unbelievable coincidence of Cardeas Vist being Links's father. Absolutely nothing would have changed and it would have made the story alot more believable.
Yeah a whole lot of change that brought. It wasn't even mentioned in F91 the opening of the box wasn't even mentioned and that flick played the same year.
This is the most generous reading of Unicorn I've ever heard. While there's no denying that the budget is finally there for a big (edit: modern) Gundam production, I think Unicorn is one of the weakest entries in the series. The premise is pretty weak. Banana is the Kira of UC, mostly for the worse. The holes it shoots in the canon are hard to mend, and I am terrified as to how NT will shape up: it sure does sound like Unicorn but even goofier. My hopes lie with the Hathaway's Flash adaptation: hopefully it'll be the missing link between CCA and F91 that we've been waiting for -- Unicorn is extremely skippable as a missing link.
Fast forward and NT was all the worst of Unicorn with none of the positives, while Hathaway Part 1 was extremely promising. I don't think Unicorn is skippable, but NT sure as hell was. I just prefer to think of Unicorn as a fanfiction with incredibly high production values. It has some sublime moments but I can't accept it into my headcanon because of the cheese.
Goddamnit. I'd like to take Unicorn at face value even with the Newtype bullshitery, but when your Char for the series is called Full Frontal, I just can't.
@@tedhodge4830 Yes, yes it is. At least they don't call him Vageena that much and Quattro can almost be a name. Here? Full Frontal. All the time, right in you face.
Great overview! And I love the fact how you have included "Life and Death" in this vid. It's the most underrated piece in my opinion. I do have a question though, if the Vist family believes agreed with the idea of harmony between earthlings and new types. Why have they chosen Unicorn, which is basically designed to hunt down NTs as the key? Is this explained somewhere in the series? Is so, I definitely missed it…
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I don't think it was explained exactly why the Unicorn was chosen as the key to Laplace's Box, but I suppose they did so because it was the most advanced mobile suit at the time and was something that was sure to protect whoever it was that would open the Box. Though, for all I know it could've been elaborated on in the original light novel series, much like Full Frontal's origins.
The best Gundam is IBO because it shows real strugle of ordinary people who want freedom and the meaningless of war itself. Unicorn is really good, the music is fantastic...
Funny how going back to unicorn looks just as if not better than wfm and cucuruz doans Island at points. 2D mecha and CG being sparingly used but well implemented to actually enhance the animation goes a long way huh
Ah yes Gundam Unicorn........... Is it really bad for me to say that I don't like this series and think it's overrated? (Gunshots are fired and knives are thrown in my direction) Thought so
Nope, it's really bad. This guy's review is WAY too patronizing. Mary Sue and the almost zero consequences of Banagher's pacifism, huge red flags. Gundam Unicorn would work well if it's a kids show, but its not, its taking itself seriously and that is unacceptable.
That can be said of the majority of Gundam ( except perhaps 00, Zeta and IBO along with some of the side stories). As someone in another famous video puts it : " Unicorn is a love letter to Gundam 0079", Just as Seed is a modern recap of OG MSG, and 00 is a modern recap of Wing. Its meant to be an overall synopsis of the UC universe. I love it, but then again I love some really cheesy things lol
Things do die back a bit for a while at least. There are a few serious conflicts but no full scale war until UC 153 and that's mainly only because Zanscare is batshit insane.
while i liked the animation, music (the music is fantastic) and overall production value, i disliked banagher; 1. neo zeon (and especially marida) destroyed industrial 7, banagher's home, killed his father, slaughtered thousands of people and his schoolmates save for that 2 that worked in nahel argama. but after a few gestures of kindness from neo zeon (mr. gilboa and zinnerman) he quickly changed sides. doesn't that make him a traitor? 2. point no.1 also applies to how banagher reacts to loni. why did he feel like loni is innocent, even though loni slaughtered thousands of people? her sorrowful past doesn't justify her actions. what's worse is that banagher only met loni for a few moments and banagher betrayed all of his dead friends by deciding that loni is innocent. 3. another thing that made banagher a hypocrite is that he claims that he didn't want to kill anyone yet he still flies off inside gundam, which is basically a killing machine, fully armed, and killed a lot of people anyway (and also indirectly caused a lot of people to die) 4. mineva, marida, loni. it seems like if they're a cute girl, banagher quickly decides that that person is innocent and have to be forgiven. seems like stupidity to me. overall it's a good anime, but a storyline-wise, worthy successor to char's counterattack? not a chance.
Between your giant robot anime and kaiju reviews I can't help but wonder if you'll ever look at Attack of the Super Monsters. :p Damn that movie's weird...
The 7 part theatrical version is simply called "Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn," While the TV edit adds the subtitle "RE: 0096." As far as I know, all 7 parts were given individual DVD and Blu-ray relases by Bandai in both Japan and America. However, some of these releases might be out of print and a complete box set (which is what I'm waiting for) has yet to be released. Luckily for you, if you decided to collect any of the Japanese Blu-rays, all of them contain the English dub and subs. This was back in the day when Bandai tried to have Americans import their local discs so that they don't have to spend money manufacturing discs for international countries. They're still doing that with the newest theatrical series, Gundam: The Origin.
The pre order price $42 on Right Stufs website. The reatail price will be $64. This isn't going to be a box set like the Gundam Wing Collectors edition was. Most of Right Stufs releases have been reasonbly priced.
I liked Unicorn on it’s own, but the fact that it seems to essentially have had no impact on the canon kind of shits on it’s messaging. Also really wish After War and the like didn’t exist because of how it strangles the creativity of any future UC series besides Hathaway’s Flash and any side stories like 0080 and the like. I wonder if Hathaway’s trilogy will even touch on the events of Unicorn or just stick to it’s own source material
Unicorn was an alternative timeline is the best way to think of it IMHO. Thunderbolt also kind of goes off to do its own thing. It would be asinine for Hathaway to even reference Unicorn or the even more out there NT, when Hathaway has its own source material which was written 15 years before Unicorn was even an idea, and written by Tomino to boot.
@@tedhodge4830 thunderbolt is definitively AU, no doubt about that. Unicorn though is difficult to just write off. Unlike After War and Victory it doesn’t take place sp far removed from the overarching plot that you can ignore it as it’s now no longer the latest UC development. The fact that it essentially sought to finish the tale of Zeon and pave the way for a new republic under Mineva Zabi makes it all the more a shame how it may never matter. Une gundams in it also went way too super robot towards the end
@@Herr_Gamer I just mean that you don't really have to include Unicorn in your personal headcanon, and it won't affect much. When I watch G Reco, F91, Victory, etc, I just pretend Unicorn and the dopey time travel stuff don't exist, and it affects nothing since it occurred in its own Fukui spawned time bubble. To be fair, Fukui was just taking the Axis Shock and the comments by Lalah about time travel being possible in MSG 1979 to their extreme. Unicorn never gets mentioned again in any of the novels or manga, other than the stuff written by Fukui himself, which makes sense considering it was written years after Hathaway, F91, Crossbone, Victory, etc. There's no good reason to watch NT, so Unicorn works out as an alternate capstone to the early UC plot where Newtype space magic is taken to the extreme. It's completely reasonable to watch it as it's an important emotional ride, and a legitimate entry in the series, but everything else that occurs canonically later in the UC timeline was completely blind to it because it was made up ad hoc by a different author. Unicorn fans can try to come up with their own explanation for why it never gets mentioned again, and they often do. I just prefer to watch the stuff made by Tomino, for the same reason that I only watch the Star Wars stuff by George Lucas. F91, Victory, G Reco, and Turn A were each all pretty much explicitly designed as reboots even though they occur in the same universe as the UC timeline, hence why they're so far in the future that nothing that came before them even gets referred to. Hell, they don't even mention Zeon. Hathaway probably won't even mention Unicorn as it didn't exist when the source material was written, and it was never brought up in Part 1, so that's a good sign.
@@tedhodge4830 I agree to some extent, but it still feels a bit off. Specially considering changes to the source material like in CCA, so variations wouldn’t be out of the question. Unicorn could sort of work like an alternative ending to the UC timeline I suppose, but still. With how heavily it is presented as part of UC, it’s not easy to view it as detached. Thunderbolt manages this with it’s themes and aesthetics, but Unicorn just looks like modern UC. Doesn’t help that so many original 0079 characters are featured. In any case, they could probably just shove in something about the feddies ignoring laplace’s box and Mineva still working in the shadows to throw a bone.
@@QuattroPogjeena seems like it from what i've seen. i don't wanna type an essay so i'll just list 4 points: unbeatable lead mobile suit, gifted main character who's always right, ludicrous love story, and a huge emphasis on fanservice.
There are aliens in the Gundam 00 movie (that's after the 00 tv show). Draco Azul is about 200 ft or 60 meters. The pilot's name is Eric Martinez. To learn more follow my comic's Facebook page!
Ok, better explanation: indeed the old guy was actually his father, who sent him away when he was young at the request of his wife, who left at the same time. Banagher had some tests done on him as a child though, which seemingly partly awoke his abilities as a newtype. Its these half awakened abilities that make him kinda vacant and distant when we meet him at first.....til he meets Minerva, who literally falls into his life. So powerful is her focus and desire to save so many, no matter the cost to herself, it literally blows the boys psychic mind. He also seems 'soul mated' to her, though its more implied than pronounced. Hence my joke of psycho boner heh.
Personally I think banager is the weakest character in unicorn. For me he is a bit too much like a mary sue. Loran was done better thanks to the set up and events of the show. I think ridhe and marida were the strongest because they have flaws and you see them grow and come to terms with things. As for the rest. The gundam and other MS were 17/10 not enough big zam
A Mary Sue isn't always a bad thing for a main character to be. A lot of times they can be used to let larger personalities bounce of of them and show us their effect on that character. A Mary Sue is only as good a their supporting cast though so I think they managed to make it work here.
Beside Banager is a breath of fresh air. he holds his own philosophy and he don't sway... i also like the fact that banager refuse to kill.. which makes him a hero for me
Calling Banagher a Mary Sue is just intellectual dishonesty. He's naive, he's constantly second guessing himself. He doesn't know what path is best and it's constantly getting the better of him. He's shown to be impetuous and even turns his back on his pacifistic ideals on a vengeful rage against Full Frontal, which even leads him to kill a decent man in combat. The following episode he was miserable and needed someone else to pull him out of his misery, like so many times before and after. Did I mention that he almost offed himself at the end, but then learned to accept that the world, and future may not go as he planned, and chose to live? A Mary Sue is NOT a character who is OP. A Mary Sue is a character who is so disgustingly perfect that nothing challenges him. Given my previous paragraph, Banagher doesn't fit that description. I swear people love to strawman the hell out of Banagher, when really, he's the most human Gundam protagonist we've ever had. I mean he's given the key to a box that could make or break the entire world. Given the fact that most of his life up to that point was directionless, when he was suddenly given the key to Laplace's box, he didn't know whether to run, fight or sit in the corner, and that's only natural. However, even so, he gets so much development that people just love to overlook, and to this day, it baffles the hell out of me.
banagher was forced drama and random crying over things that to any sane human being would make sense. worse written character in gundam series. @@comradefreedom8275
wanted to see a real final fight like in CCA, yet they made fullfrontal like a cuck losing out of nowhere once again like his predecessor in a inferior unit from start to finish...plot armor and superior unit helping the hypocrite main characters
I don't really think this should be anyone's first for two reasons, but to each their own... 1. It's too over the top with it's newtype power fantasy that it'll give you misconceptions, infact I think Zeta had the right amount of newtype powers, Unicorn really just stretched that suspension of disbelief... 2. This'll change the way how a newcomer would see the UC for awhile, it has an optional retcon, And you've gotta understand that this was written by someone who's controversial, anti-west and pro-militia.
It was originally programmed to be just a blood-lusting killing machine by the Federation. However, it was Banagher newtype power along with his father's reprogramming that turned the Unicorn into a tool for peace.
@@KaijuNoir Thanks for explaining! If you do a Gundam 00 video I'll definitely watch that. That's the best gateway into Gundam I'm because of the standalone universe.
Just watched it, and I think it was really dumb to make the Unicorn Gundam like the Wing system. If it was made as a key to test a worthy person just to take them to the box.. why did it turn against other new types?? Who made this Gundam? Wasn't it made to open the door for a better future? Makes no sense, only to have drama and battles between characters.
The Unicorn Gundam was originally made as an anti-Newtype weapon developed by Anaheim Electronics, the same company that built the previous Gundams for the Federation. However, it was Cardeas Vist that repurposed the machine into the key to Laplace's Box. Given its original programming, it's not a perfect machine for peace and so it is ultimately up to the protagonist to use its power responsibly (like humanity and our ability to change the world with our various tools and resources). So in a way, you're right in that it adds tension and drama for the characters and setting, as all good plot devices should.
Meh, in the end I side with Full Frontal on this one.
I agree, especially with 00
Unfortunately, real life has people preaching, "Don't spread hate," to people who already don't spread hate. Meanwhile, the preachers ignore and defend the people who actually do spread hate.
Proving that ideals depicted in fiction don't always translate well to reality.
Unicorn taught me all that. OO taught me that anime from a good series can still be shit.
@Excelsior For me personally, the series got worse the more further you watched it.
Yep this was my first Gundam series ever. I enjoyed the visuals but got really lost. Maybe Ill watch the other series and come back to Unicorn.
edmond lee watch the original Gundam movie Trilogy, Zeta Gundam movie trilogy and Chars Counterattack at least to get the things in Unicorn.
Thank you I will.
edmond lee no problem. Normally I would say to watch ZZ Gundam as well for the sake of continuity, but what I recommended before is the minimum necessary.
Dont watch the movies for MS Gundam and Zeta, as they changed elements especially in Zeta than the series, which the Unicorn follows. Also watch 0080, MS08Th Team, and Stardust Memories as these events also tie into Unicorn
gundam unicorn had the best fucking music
Check out Turn A Gundam.
Hiroyuki Sawano. He will also be doing Gundam NT.
hiroyukisawano
he make Attack on Titan music too
Thunderbolt.
Definitely the best OST in Gundam series!, I heard all but damn, sawano make his best OST here!
I love UC and Thunderbolt, where they explore the best and the worst, respectively, of humanity in war
They also have the best animation and Soundstracks to date. Thunderbolt got me into free Jazz AND Pop lol
Thunderbolt also has the heaviest fuckin' suits in almos any series AND jazz.
You cant go wrong with jazz.
@@KillerOrca where is the best place to watch different series
@@ForGlory1 GundamInfo here on UA-cam (Bandai's offical Gundam site) and I think there's some floating around on blogs too.
Well, Thunderbolt took place on the final days of the One Year War in UC
Best Gundam soundtrack. Hiroyuki Sawano is a legend.
Best Sawano soundtrack to boot.
Go check out thunderbolt
I think Zeta had the best
One of the best.
@@BladeOfLight16 I'd actually say it's his weakest work. Not that it isn't good, but almost everything else he's made is far better.
I love the grunt fight scenes. Almost all of them are experienced
Yeah, Riddhe slowly goes insane,
While Merida goes... sane?
Riddhe becomes a monster while he loses the few tenuous meaningful connections he had to other people. Marida becomes part of a ragtag, cobbled together family (Zinnerman, Mineva, and Banagher) and finds meaning and peace for the first time in her life.
Riddhe literally gets rejected by a girl who would rather jump out of a plane than being with him. This is just a whole new level, much worse than friendzoning someone. It's like a very polite way of saying "Can you just fk off already?"
That's why when I saw the scene at 14:54, I just cracked up lol.
Unicorn was the first i ever seen of gundam shows, followed by 00 and ibo
I was so confused about the wikipedia saying that Unicorn Gundam had 22 episodes but I only seen 7 and I thought that was the end. Basically I seen them all but a TV series is 22 episodes. That confused me but now I know why. Thank you.
Gundam was the 2nd anime series that captured my attention, after "Star Blazers" (Space Battleship Yamto), and my favorite.
Lol!! Could you imagine the Captain not using the Wave Motion Gun cause, feelings?
3:32 I’m pretty sure it’s more of a miniature mobile worker, not mobile suit.
6:15 one of the surviving Plu clones, Judou saved another on his way to Jupiter. In his mostly functional ZZ Gundam.
See, kid started off like a shinji ikari
Then he ended up being really likeable and admirable, despite the world he lives in
No, he just got worst.
Unicorn Gundam is my favorite Gundam show of all time
It's literally, my favorite work of fiction ever.
Loved how you accurately analyzed full frontal's character, a living form of propoganda among other things like the real chars compassionate side
sadly. even humanity have a chance to start anew with laplace box opened. we still wage war on eachother for the next half century.
He's written much better music, you should check out more of his work
@@jakefoley9539 I have, and frankly, I'm more impressed by his work on Unicorn.
Still love Gundam Seed, Gundam Unicorn, and Gundam 00. The shows have help create me as a person on top of my parents and personal views. I do love how the shows have seen hidden flaws of humanity still in this modern day. Even as we change and stuff.
UNICORN IS AWESOME! By the way, Gundam is my favorite anime franchise as well.
Kevin Goeltz mine too!!
Got2LoveLife Sweet!
Kevin Goeltz I love unicorn. I just wish his master grade model kit looked more like he does in the obs. The psychoframe looks more pinkish instead of sparkling red.
Same
Kevin what about IBO? it's gundam.
Yeah... because the story up till now was that of Char and his exploits, everything revolves around him, so this show in terms of narrative progression is about wrapping up the loose ends left by Char dying, Char and Zeon and what happens to it
Now I don't agree with the amount of magic shenanigans there are, but the general concept of organizing the slate that is the UC storyline to make it a better exposition point for the next arc of the UC universe is good, setting up for the rise of our traditional underdog charcters into positions of power and exploring the issues and problems from that side while the children from the original arcs grow up and take their own path, only to fail to differing degrees, leading to stuff like Hathaway and the continued weakening of the Federation as our original cast now in Powerful positions try to fix and eliminate stuff that made the federation so horrible yet at the same time powerful, which would lead to the Federation losing control and splitting into a multistate world like our own, letting people decide for themselves instead of trying to control things in vain from above, to stop trying to take everything into their own hands and doing what they think is right and forcing it onto others like Char, but leave it to the people choose, just like what Amuro realized
Winged gundam and shining gundam are my favorites. The suits and pilots.
Great anime that takes the storytelling from the 80's/90's with modern animation techniques = a breath taking journey into the Gundam universe.
i love your content unicorn is a very special ova for me. oh and i love your channel bro especially your gundam content.
I loved this show so much. 6 hours of intense and immersive Gundam. Zeta will always be number one in my heart though.
Now that I think about it...I don’t think they ever reused a scene in this one Gundam series.
Riddhe is worst character in this show. My reasoning?
MARIDA NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I agree> to tell u the truth riddhe is the only thing i hate in this OVA
@Akin Khoo the fact of how banager wrecked him and cut his leg while boosting through to la+ says a lot about his skill
These were the original sins that Riddhe had to take in when he first proposed to Mineva
Riddhe hoped to destroy the entire culture at once by marrying Mineva.
A Bright Slap is required.
I like Unicorn, but Full Frontal. What a name lol
Yeah, I think a lot of that got lost in translation.
Is it a better or worse name than Quattro Vageena?

love the intro and the review...hope you could do a top 10 ms list for each timelines...Top 10 UC etc...continue good work Mr. Noir
PS Looking forward to the first impression vid fo KR Build
Thank you very much Kevin! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I do plan on making Top 5/10's eventually. However, I don't think I'll make them THAT specific (dedicating lists to specific timelines) since I'd like to have a lot of variety. That way they'd be more fun for me and for newcomers who don't know a lot about Gundam in general. Afterall, most of my fanbase are Kaiju fans ;)
Awesome...Gonna look forward for that^^
I could hear the lyrics in my head whilst listening to the orchestral cover of Fly! Gundam
The ver ka "full" psychoframe is not canonical. It was just the cockpit in CCA. The Ver Ka is basically a "what if" reimagining as I understand it.
Now I have to start watching the 1st Gundam and all of the Universal century continuity 😊
The "transformation" was first used in the blue destiny side story via the EXAM system and the Supreme Gundam via the ALICE system
Love both story of Blue Destiny and S gundam
Loved unicorn and came here to catch up on some details on the show, but a lot of spoilers from the previous series were shot out without warning, I understand it’s been decades since they released but I just started watching the original series and now the fates of certain characters ( Amuro) was instantly ruined without any warning whatsoever, I feel cheated out of that now since I just ordered the blue rays of the original movies, the video was great but I felt a spoiler warning was much needed since that wasn’t supposed to be the topic
I eh... don't want to be that guy but you forgot a few returning characters:
SPOILERS:
Beltorchika Irma (From Zeta)
Kai Shiden (From 0079 - Zeta)
Martha's connection to Melanie Hue Carbine (The moon's mayor)
Amuro, Lalah as well as Char in spirit form.
That's it from me!
I didn't mention them because I didn't want to spoil/ruin these neat moments for fans who have yet to see the series.
When does lalah and chars spirit form appear??
I watched unicorn from the OVA and i watched it a LONG TIME AGO so i might forget it
Beside from some OP to bullshit level weapons, and Mary Sue protagonist, I really like alot of things from the show. Aside from Banagher, every other character are well handled.
I like your thorough and overall positive review. Keep up the great work. And I want to add one thing: Re-Zel is closer to Methuss than Zeta.
Z+ constitutes a mass production of zeta, and Delta+ is closer to zeta since it is based on delta, a conceptual prototype for hyaku shiki and was something like a brother to zeta.
love your review man. gundam uc is indeed a real gem
Thanks man, I appreciate the support!
I love this orchestrated version of the OG Gundam theme. Just magnificent!
I say watch origins and then unicorn. I did this an I think it goes together very well.
I don't know why but I like your voice.
Ultimately....its a good watch with amazing visuals and sound with nice Gundam fan service.....but the story and characters will confuse new Gundam fans and it doesn't give much reason to see it again.
note the transam system was an expansion on the blue destiny's exam mode an anti new type combat powerup
Full frontal was right, bhanager has no right to assert his views over others since he has no experience when compared to every other character
But even still!
Watch Zeta. Lots of mech battles, drama, good animation, great mech design.
@@RezaQin you will be happy to know I successfully completed the entire Universal Century a few days ago. Zeta might be my favorite.
gundam is my LYFE
It's a great series but I could have done without the unbelievable coincidence of Cardeas Vist being Links's father. Absolutely nothing would have changed and it would have made the story alot more believable.
Unicorn is the centrist dream. This represents my hope for humanity.
Here to figure out my life after watching the Gundam NT movie in theaters last night.
Yeah a whole lot of change that brought. It wasn't even mentioned in F91 the opening of the box wasn't even mentioned and that flick played the same year.
Gundam to me tells of the people, why it happened, how people reacted their reasons and wars, and many other things
Unicorn is one of my favorites
Waiting for narrative so I’m happy to catch up on unicorn
Also the Rozen Zulu is based off the Hamma Hamma
Goddamnit. I'd like to take Unicorn at face value even with the Newtype bullshitery, but when your Char for the series is called Full Frontal, I just can't.
Full Frontal was literally the best thing about the show, though. Is it any worse than "Quattro Vageena?"
@@tedhodge4830 Yes, yes it is. At least they don't call him Vageena that much and Quattro can almost be a name. Here? Full Frontal. All the time, right in you face.
I wish all gundam series are animated like this...i cant enjoy those cartoon character design on other series
if *Every* Gundam show was animated like this it’d take 4 years just like Unicorn
F91, 0083 Stardust Memory, and 0080 War in the Pocket all have top tier animation and art design.
I just find it funny that Gundam is saying that as long as ur color red, ur 3x faster. Lol
Oi, dats roight ya git, red wunz go fasta!
Well, you also have some glimpse of Mineva in ZZ
I don't care that it's aided my computers. It's a beautiful show to look at and that's the whole point.
The Rezel is actually more base on the Methuss if anything else.
The best Gundam is IBO because it shows real strugle of ordinary people who want freedom and the meaningless of war itself. Unicorn is really good, the music is fantastic...
everything you said is wrong. it was the worse out of all o them.
can you do a gundam thunderbolt review and/or analysis
still hoping for original trilogy remake >.
(Gunshots are fired and knives are thrown in my direction) Thought so
It's bad I'm the writing is just not acceptable.
Nope, it's really bad. This guy's review is WAY too patronizing. Mary Sue and the almost zero consequences of Banagher's pacifism, huge red flags. Gundam Unicorn would work well if it's a kids show, but its not, its taking itself seriously and that is unacceptable.
@@123nicanor no
I think it's good, but I find the protagonist pretty annoying sometimes.
Also, nice intro.
Thanks man! My friend Brayton Conner made it.
KaijuNoir love it
Spoiler: The conflict never stops. Several wars occur after UC 0096.
Things do die back a bit for a while at least. There are a few serious conflicts but no full scale war until UC 153 and that's mainly only because Zanscare is batshit insane.
As much as I hate to say it I did not like this one after the third time the main character was captured I tuned out
Never saw the original oav. I saw the new version. Yet it to me it was a great series. Though i do want see this verison you showed today.
The original OVA is _much_ better. The pacing is so much easier to digest, and there's no annoying exposition at the start of each episode.
while i liked the animation, music (the music is fantastic) and overall production value, i disliked banagher;
1. neo zeon (and especially marida) destroyed industrial 7, banagher's home, killed his father, slaughtered thousands of people and his schoolmates save for that 2 that worked in nahel argama. but after a few gestures of kindness from neo zeon (mr. gilboa and zinnerman) he quickly changed sides. doesn't that make him a traitor?
2. point no.1 also applies to how banagher reacts to loni. why did he feel like loni is innocent, even though loni slaughtered thousands of people? her sorrowful past doesn't justify her actions. what's worse is that banagher only met loni for a few moments and banagher betrayed all of his dead friends by deciding that loni is innocent.
3. another thing that made banagher a hypocrite is that he claims that he didn't want to kill anyone yet he still flies off inside gundam, which is basically a killing machine, fully armed, and killed a lot of people anyway (and also indirectly caused a lot of people to die)
4. mineva, marida, loni. it seems like if they're a cute girl, banagher quickly decides that that person is innocent and have to be forgiven. seems like stupidity to me.
overall it's a good anime, but a storyline-wise, worthy successor to char's counterattack? not a chance.
He begrudgingly works with the sleeves.
when you ordered the gundam unicorn mg ova ver, but has yet to arrive
REALLY starting to wish I'd seen this BEFORE I watched Narrative, Im only now understanding half of what was going on...
That's great but you forgot to mention that it can be a little bit slow at times don't get me wrong I understand how important it is but still
Are the movies different than the TV show?
Between your giant robot anime and kaiju reviews I can't help but wonder if you'll ever look at Attack of the Super Monsters. :p Damn that movie's weird...
Ha ha, I'd probably look at that with my friend Enshohma since he's usually into weird and obscure material like that.
It was pretty good until the end but the colony laser and time travel parts were low points.
The ReZEL is developed more from the Methuss than the Zeta.
It's part Zeta, part Methuss and part Jegan.
Is the 7 part theatrical series available on blu-ray? If so what is it called so I do not get it confused with the tv edit?
Right stuf is supposed to release the entire 7 part OVA collection next year in March.
I saw the announcement this weekend. Talk about timing!
They just announced a packaged set. Though knowing how they sell these things... It'll probably be at least $100.

I just mean that you don't really have to include Unicorn in your personal headcanon, and it won't affect much.
Unicorn is sort of... cringe. It is honestly one of my least favourite UC series.
honestly felt more like a SEED series than a UC series imo
Altrocado really? I haven’t watched seed, 00 or wing ʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ
@@QuattroPogjeena seems like it from what i've seen. i don't wanna type an essay so i'll just list 4 points: unbeatable lead mobile suit, gifted main character who's always right, ludicrous love story, and a huge emphasis on fanservice.

6:31 wait shwarz bruder is a char like character?
Isn’t Anno Domini the Gundam 00 timeline? So does that mean they’re connected?
Nope, it's just an alternate version of AD. Similar to Gunpla Builders Beginning G's AD and Build Fighters's AD.
Are there any Alien in Gundam PS what kind of power does your robot have how Big is he and does he have a pilot or does he have free will🤖
There are aliens in the Gundam 00 movie (that's after the 00 tv show). Draco Azul is about 200 ft or 60 meters. The pilot's name is Eric Martinez. To learn more follow my comic's Facebook page!
Wait what that guy was his father? And gave him a mobile suit? And on top of that he follows the zabi girl for no real reason?
Beside Banager is a breath of fresh air. he holds his own philosophy and he don't sway...
i also like the fact that banager refuse to kill.. which makes him a hero for me
that doesnt explain his abnormal newtype power and piloting skill. He's on par with Riddhe at least and that makes no sense at all
Calling Banagher a Mary Sue is just intellectual dishonesty.
2. This'll change the way how a newcomer would see the UC for awhile, it has an optional retcon,
And you've gotta understand that this was written by someone who's controversial, anti-west and pro-militia.
Lol! Just another guy with the ultimate power watching all of his friends die while he has a good cry
Why was the Unicorn programed to go into a blood-lust around new-types if it's supposed to be a key to a better world??
I think the Rezel is more of a methuss successor
Do the gundam thunderbolt plz
but zeta gundam came before dbz
