  • Everybody's gotta start somewhere. For the 19-year-old formerly known as Barbara Joan Streisand, that somewhere was Bon Soir, an intimate nightclub in New York's Greenwich Village, where her performances heralded the arrival of a major new artist. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with author James Gavin and critics Wesley Morris and Stephen Holden about Barbra Streisand's debut, and how New York's cabarets in the 1950s and '60s helped launch some of the most influential figures of American popular culture.

I’ll never forget having the opportunity to fly Barbra and her husband James as well as 3 others on a private jet from Camarillo, Ca. to France. It was the most beautiful and memorable experience as a private flight attendant. I loved that she spoke French to me when I mentioned that I was French and is very fluent with the language. She’s even written songs in French. It was such a joy to have met her up close and personal. I was the only flight attendant on that long flight. So, I made sure she was treated like a queen. She appreciated my first class service and hugged me and thanked me with her pup in her arms as she was about to deplane. Wow! I was so fortunate to have gotten a hug from such an icon!!

Barbra Streisand knew at a very young age she had been given an innate talent through her voice. She has made the most of it. She nurtured it, she took care of it and she respected it. Most of all, she did not abuse her innate gift. Very few do so.

Barbra Streisand knew what she wanted when she wanted and how she wanted it. People, particularly men, call that "difficult" when it's a woman doing that. But, she has outlasted most if not all her contemporaries from the 60s in popular music and outlasted everyone since. I remember being young and hearing her duet with Celine Dion and just being amazed that this person has sung duets with Judy Garland all the way to Celine Dion. Now, that has extended all the way to Ariana Grande.
She's an icon, she's a legend, and she's earned all her titles, minus the sexist ones. Her voice will inspire for years to come.

I'm glad this focused on her early career, which IMO is her very best stuff. She was so audacious, so innovative, and so unpredictable. I wasn't alive then, but when I hear her recordings from that period, I'm always struck by the risks she takes with her phrasing or the subtle ways she alters a melody. Her performance of "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" on the Judy Garland show is an absolute masterclass vocally and dramatically.

What an experience to be in one of those jazz clubs drinking cocktails & listening to Barbra Streisand. Her voice brings tears to my eyes because it’s just so beautiful. And then when she speaks, it’s totally different, still has her Brooklyn accent. I have a similar nasal voice

Only discovered her specials in the last couple of years and didn't know what a spectacular start she had (grew up with her Broadway album and Yentl as my only reference). And then last year that Bon Soir album (can't believe it took that long to release) really sealed the deal -- she really is phenomenal. To help plant the seed now, I've been fortunate to see jazz singer Samara Joy at several concerts, including one venue featured in this segment, Village Vanguard. I think Samara will have a similar trajectory; even in this last year after her Grammy wins, she's taken leaps and bounds in her live performances, and is similar to Barbra in taking old songs and making them new, and in that "EKG" ups and downs, taking you on a fantastic journey. Now I gotta revisit Barbara's other albums.

4 years ago we attended at the last concert of #BarbraStreisand at an open space outside US.
    I asked her for #AnswerMe. She replied: "You're a #truecollector".
    #Evergreens She co-wrote it too.

She said it-- her singing paid the bills, but she wanted most to be an actress.

“The ekg of it is your spirit responding to someone else’s.” What an insightful comment about what intimacy with music and place and talent offers us as humans. Music is a life force I hold with reverence. This is to CBS Sunday Morning: growing up, your show, helmed by the incomparable and missed Roger Kuralt, was the cathedral of our Sunday Mornings. The unique cadence of his voice, his framing of stories, his talent, well it
To truly a treasured touchpoint of my youth. And although my beloved and deceased mother was a remarkably gentle and kind human being, I somehow knew that when I heard that trumpet call early on Sunday’s, it was time to get my blanket and curl up next to my mama on the couch, and for the next 90 minutes, to not say a word, to just be quiet and listen and see. The gentleness of this show, the expansive, curious, humane, intelligent, wise, generous of spirit nature of this show, has for decades now been exemplary programming, right down to the sweet and quiet kiss of the natural world’s send off at the end. It’s that rare show where segment guests are afforded the unhurried silence to form and state their thoughts, without interruption and with abundant affection and grace. You’ve stayed true to the essence I grew up with, and CBS Sunday Morning is a treasure. I thank you for helping build intimacy with the less harsh nature of existence. It is a comfort, still.

How is it that Jane Pauley does not age?? It's incredible. I know there's such a thing as makeup, but aging eventually catches up with you. It's taking its sweet ol' time with Jane.

I saw her at the Blue Angel in '63. Midnight show. Winter, pouring rain and snow.
18 people in the club. I counted. She did a full set. 40 minutes. Probably her smallest audience ever.

The difference with Streisand is that she had a Stradivarius like gift AND she had the talent to use it. You could give me that voice (or a Stradivarius) and I’d be singing in the shower or playing a violin in my garage, that is all I could do with it. But she could play it like no one else. She brought love and life to the songs and acted them “into” life. No one else will ever, in a hundred years, manage to do that.
