Bottom line --Our Armed Forces need best weapons & Men as we have two nuclear armed adversaries. N̈O COMPROMISE ON THIS. Majority of the Arms & Ammunition being Made In India have their origin abroad and are produced locally thru some ToT etc. In true sense 100% conceptualized, designed, developed and manufactured weapons are very rare. Therefore choice of weapon be best left to Armed Forces. Why cannot indian companies look for tie up with sig sauer company so they make few of these in india or at least service these while in operation. AK203 is also being done on ToT basis from Russia.
This looks like a emergency arms procurement by the army and in that regard the army made the right decision by going for the sig 716i because its a proven platform with established production capacity to meet the army needs. Sss would've required more time and capital to scale up production .

Enemies at the gates won’t wait for your plans. Our defense forces have already faced delays in getting high-grade weapons due to the Atmanirbharta push. Don't get me wrong-I fully support self-reliance, but we need to produce world-class, high-quality equipment first. Companies should lead in R&D and stop relying solely on government support. Make the best products at scale, and the market will follow. For you, it's business; for those on the front lines, it’s their lives. Our chaps deserve the best we can buy in the market (in India or outside).
No Indian, this is what happened. The Chinese soldiers on your boarder wear "titanium body armor". The Indian army needed a rifle and ammunition that could penetrate that body armor right now. So they went with the Sig 716 with the 7.62 x 51 ammunition. India will still develop it's own assault rifles but for now this was a temporary solution to a pressing problem you have on your border.

You know kw when soldiers actually die? When they don't have a constant supplies of weapons and their parts during the wars, and their guns are nothing better than a paper weight. Don't you think they will force our government to do their bidding if they manage to take over small arms scenarios like they do to NATO countries. look at the war in ukrain, US is supporting them now but if Trump gets elected next, he will force ukrain to stop resisiting and call a ceasefire if they don't he will cut off supplies which will have the same effect. Our generals don't mind that as long as they keep getting gifted with apartment in Florida and foreign scholarship for their undeserving children. But they should
Why should he make a Sig Sauer? He has made his own. That could have been tested against the Sig and the better one selected. He was not asking for it not to be tested. You don’t have the capacity to address this on war footing that it’s needed at- army has more deployment needs in both 16 corps area and at LAC. Ideally the AK203 should be scrapped and Indian private sector given a chance
Just 72k for war. Even with 72k, during war time there will be more wear tear of weapon for which you need spare parts. Since we are procuring sigs directly from US, you have to import those too. Give any private players money they can make any quantity and quality you want.
Anyone who has been weapons enthusiasts for a long time would k lnow, that at this point our army generals are more concerned with looking cool and getting their Swiss accounts filled than the cpuntys interest. Their motto is keep delaying ordering o sigenous stuff for as long as possible so in the end phoren maal can make it's way in. They destroyed ARJUNS , they have successfully nearly destroyed ATAGS and of course they will destroy small arms private players too. Foren maal means rokda saheb. I hope they learn something from their counterparts in the navy. Who have been at forefront of indigenisation and also saved other platforms like LCA TEJAS from meeting the same fate as ARJUNS
It’s not just about manning a soldier with a rifle, there are a lot of other factors involved. When you give a man a new rifle, you have to train him to fire it, maintain it, remove stoppages, carry it and then change his other gear according to the rifle, like carry sling, magazine pouch and other accessories. Now, it’s not just the rifle you procure, there are other attachments also, which have already been procured. Other than these factors, it would just not keep up with the uniformity. Considering all of that, it was justified of the army to go ahead with the planned procurement.

It's not only about the calibre, these weapons also need maintenance and spares. From EME point of view, the lesser the variety, the easier are the logistics as range of spares are less and depth is more. Having an assortment of weapons makes maintenance and supply a nightmare. Indian Army and the Indian Airforce are far behind compared to the Navy. Navy has been supporting local industries since 3 decades. Army and Airforce still don't have their internal R&D or design centers unlike the Navy. Army is still stuck in British times and care more about maintaining their Polo grounds and Golf courses than invest in technology centers or private sector.
Agreed. The navy regularly coordinates with Mazagaon Docks and Garden Reach Ltd when it comes to manufacturing vessels unlike airforce or army.
@@adityabhattacharyya8727 The army couldn't even give a well defined list for Arjun tank development and now that the tank is ready, they don't want it. In fact, they gave further orders for the Russian T 90 coz Arjun is too heavy to cross the Indo-Pak border.
This has been the same problem with Kalyani Group. Indian armed forces, they themselves does not want to give orders to Indian companies which makes me so angry. Our own companies are making world class weapons for the world and yet they themselves does not get order from their own country. Same story repeating for Stryker and Javelin also.

Poor Pakistanis in Peshawar producing better rifles than Indian ordinance factories.
It’s a shame to see competent people like the CEO feeling frustrated with the indian military. 3 different squad weapons lol. They can’t even share bullets in the event of a firefight lol. What a logistics nightmare. Every time there is an emergency the military reacts by buying stopgap weapons with no strategic planning.
You don't know how a Military squad operates. It is Universal, everywhere. There are 3 different Squad weapons. One DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle). One LMG (Light Machine Gun). And the other Infantrymen Carry the Assigned Squad Weapon (A Carbine or a rifle).

No wonder our country remained a slave nation still has same mindset
The Amry itself is so confused with which calibre to be made as a standard for procurement. Sig 716 is actually a DMR don't know why they're going with it !!!
Their understanding might be that most gunfights and skirmishes occur in further distance and not close. Specially in difficult terrains enemies ambushes from further and escapes. Also, typically in a squad there will be different weapons used according to their role imo
This is the reason other private companiare not interested in defence sector.
Army has a mindset to buy outside nations despite national interest
considering they suffered a lot with INSAS, I understand their pov for choosing an established entity with a good track record over a new player in the game but Indian entities also need to be given a chance.

Geo politics have a role in defence purchases. It is not just about one procurement…..Govts have to look at
the big picture.
In the process, local manufacturers are getting cold shouldered, sometimes.
Sometimes government buying choices are dictated by Geo politics. If Russia says " you gotta buy this rifle from us and support us in our war, so that we will transfer s400 technology. "Then India will have to look at the bigger picture. Therefore we can't look at one procurement in isolation.
True
Correct, it also has to do with the Kashmir issue.
So the recent US diplomats visit to farmer protestors and Kashmir separatist parties is the reason india suddenly gave an order for rifles. Thats blackmail not balancing.
The Russians never offered S400 tech transfer. And never will.

Big concern is our military has no indigenous plan for 7.62×51 rifle, atleast its not in public domain.

Therefore competition is usually between foreign manufactured and India made Foreign weapons. So ultimately we get foreign designed & developed weapon irrespective it is made in India or abroad.
Therefore choice of weapon be best left to Armed Forces.
Why cannot indian companies look for tie up with sig sauer company so they make few of these in india or at least service these while in operation.
AK203 is also being done on ToT basis from Russia.
I request the anchor should have found the intermediate dealers and middlemen.. things can become more clear
This looks like a emergency arms procurement by the army and in that regard the army made the right decision by going for the sig 716i because its a proven platform with established production capacity to meet the army needs. Sss would've required more time and capital to scale up production .
Agar 716 proven platform hai or army ko proven platform hi chahiye to army general bhi Russian or american se manga lete hai woh battle proven ho jayega
Sss should sell to other countries first and compell indian army & police to buy sss products
Indian navy has a successful design team ..why indian army cant?

@@dasarpurug army has no push for other countries to buy our stuff. Army itself is a buyer in the market. It’s the companies and our government trying hard to push, which they should. Fun fact: nobody buys our guns, not because our army does not buy it, but because they are not up to mark. The things that are up to mark like infrared goggles and missiles are bought both by our defense forces and others as well. It’s simple as that. Don't you think they will force our government to do their bidding if they manage to take over small arms scenarios like they do to NATO countries.

You don’t have the capacity to address this on war footing that it’s needed at- army has more deployment needs in both 16 corps area and at LAC. Ideally the AK203 should be scrapped and Indian private sector given a chance
Ak203 is junk like INSAS.
Kickbacks😢

Reduce it autonomous sovereignty and continue forcing it to buy from overseas providers. Overseas jobs, economy etc etc..

India army should encourage own private industry but in mean time army should have the advanced rifle world have. So our company should produce advanced rifle which have light weight, barrelongitivity, accuracy, greater range, non jamming, non mechanical failure etc in comparison to other
It's not only about the calibre, these weapons also need maintenance and spares. From EME point of view, the lesser the variety, the easier are the logistics as range of spares are less and depth is more. Having an assortment of weapons makes maintenance and supply a nightmare. That said, a long term planning process is definitely needed to encourage local manufacture. The weak area is generally the metallurgy.
