  • Rick Steves' Europe © 2020 | Venturing beyond Europe, and with local experts as his guides, Rick uses Ethiopia as a classroom for understanding global hunger and extreme poverty - and how to beat it. Together, we witness the importance of water, education, empowering women, and nutrition during a child's first thousand days. And we see firsthand the impact of globalization and climate change. Our souvenir: A vivid appreciation of how ending hunger is possible - and how smart and modern development aid is the key. #ricksteves #ethiopia

To everyone watching this video - the presenter compared the size of Ethiopia to that of Italy!
The size of Ethiopia is 1,104,300 sq km while Italy is 301,340 sq km - this makes Ethiopia 266% larger than Italy. Thank you for the video but I hope the presenter will correct this huge mistake.

It is great that Rick has decided to shed light on some of our world's challenges, and some of the possible solutions. I would also like to see episodes that address overpopulation, access to family planning, and how having smaller families is better for everyone. A departure it is!! ...Ethiopia has beautiful landscapes too just like the European countrie he visits but like most westerners, they can't seem to find it in themselves to showcase Africa positively and accurately. There are state of the art malls and freeways but I guess it's better to show poverty ,malnutrition and kids with flies in their eyes. There's poverty in many parts of Europe too but he can't cover that narrative. # Africans wake up and tell your own stories, no one else will do it for you.

Ethiopia has an HDI of 0.492, which is 176th out of all counties on Earth. Don’t get me wrong - Africa has beauty and history like any other place, but to compare its poverty and struggles to Europe is just foolish. Westerners spinning a narrative aren’t to blame here, much as you’d like to think that way.

As the Executive Director of Water to Thrive, I've witnessed the growth and progress over the last nine years since I've been traveling to east Africa building water wells for those most needy, rural villages. You shared the poverty and struggles in a dignified manner and your questions at the end are consistent with my own inner conflicts...should I feel guilty (because I have so much and so many have so little)? Why should I care? Can I make a difference? In need, each of us can make a difference and it is the essence of our existence...to help others along our journey.

Ethiopia has up until now water issues -like Sudan - because for many , many years, the British avoided at all costs that Ethiopia build dams.
The British wanted Egypt (their unofficial colony) to have water to supply instead.
So Ethiopia (which like Sudan is the source of the river Nike has had famines and systematic lack of water). In Sudan the English committed genocides, literally, including the one in Omdurman (called battle of Omdurman) where they killed thousands of people. One of the English who took part in the genocide was Churchill.

Ethiopia has a population growth rate of 2.6% annually which means it doubles in under 30 years. In 1990, the population was 49 million but is now close to 115 million.
Family planning should be the #1 form of aid or else the other development programs and the land will be overwhelmed. Foreign aid will not always be available to ride over the hill in the nick of time.

I live on a boat on the Chesapeake Bay and I have to fetch water every day from late November until late March every year, since the dock water must be turned off over winter. Every time I’m cussing under my breath pulling that cart full of water jugs and then heating it on the stove to bathe or wash dishes, I’m grateful that at least it’s clean water and it’s not that far of a walk. BUT any way you look at it, living without running water takes up a SIGNIFICANT chunk of your day! Fetching & transporting it and then heating it up to wash stuff all wastes valuable time that could be better served doing something else.

I saw the preview. It is absolutely marvelous that the gentle and thoughtful travel guide and commentator Rick Steeves is now branching out beyond Europe -- Iran, Egypt, and now Ethiopia.
(Guilded churches and monuments to potentates who started wars was getting pretty boring), and, perhaps even more importantly, is now going "beyond traditional sightseeing" and is reporting on how the materially less fortunate (but no less interesting) people of our world live and on promising ways to improve their lives.
I lived in Ethiopia for 7 years and am avidly looking forward to Mr. Steeves' presentation.

"Hello. Richard Stevens here, back with more of the absolute very BEST of Europe! This time, we're comparing the government policies and standard of living of European people, vs. African people. It's Ethiopia, a country that was never colonized by Europeans, yet still faces the same problems as other African nations. Thank you so much for joining us."

"modest and dignified lives"??? Poverty does not mean undignified. In my opinion, that is a grave insult. Ethiopia has a lot to be dignified about. Their resilience and determination to grow is admirable!!

Thank you for showing the world what we’re dealing with Rick 🙏🏻 This is why we’re building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, to be able to produce enough electricity to ease the life of our population. Egypt is fighting us claiming we have enough water and against the Dam ignoring the conditions these people are living in but exaggerating their need for water although our Dam is a hydroelectric one and only filled by 5% of the annual rain water for 4 to seven years. God bless you tremendously ❤️

Volcanoes, Blue Nile waterfalls, Lake Tana, Lalibela Temples will not leave anyone indifferent. We did not see anything like this in the film about travel)). But in order to show it you have to love travel! It is much easier to show 2-3 rural schools, visit the suburbs of large cities and shoot a video about wells)). There are excellent films about a hydroelectric power plant under construction, new universities, the life of ordinary peasants. These films are available on UA-cam, but what does Rick have to do with it?)).
Rick Steves is the author of excellent travel and tourism films. Ethiopia has amazingly beautiful corners of nature. Fantastic, especially in the mountainous part and the Nile valley. Instead of showing these magnificent places and combining them with the story of the life of the population, Rick offered a film full of platitudes. What for? This is not his topic. There are a huge number of documentaries that detail the modern life of Africa, including Ethiopia, Eritria, and so on. The authors of these films, by the way, do not confuse the sizes of Ethiopia and Italy.
Rick Steves is interesting in his travels, where he talks about sights and shows nature. Ethiopia has real gems and fantastic beauties! Unfortunately, Rick made a film full of superficial and uninteresting episodes.

I strongly disagree. Rick Steves accurately portrayed Ethiopia's reality, highlighting both its natural beauty and everyday life. Ignoring the rural schools, the fight against hardship, and ongoing progress would only present a skewed, incomplete picture. He offered a balanced, authentic view of the country.

Great video, thank-you for sharing. There is only one airliner from Africa arriving in Argentina, taking off from Adds Ababa. A very rich culture challenging nature for a better future. All women crew aboard the inaugural flight from Ethiopia just the women's day, the 8th of March, 2018.
Colourful Lalibela, a language with nice alphabet and all the promises for a nation, Ethiopia!.
