4:07 if he's using the manley in figure 8 too doesn't that make it blumlein not Mid Side?

it only counts as a blumlein when you pan both eights left and right. but the combined signal of the eight facing the drum as mid and the eight facing left and right as side adds up to the same polar pattern as a blumlein, so technically you're not wrong. i guess the benefit here is having symmetry even with two different mics. basically you can use mid/side with any polar pattern as the mid mic, but it will change the overall directivity
