    Everyone has been struggling to clasify me, I've sung really low before, but now I can sing a lot of the soprano parts too. So now I'm between mezzo and soprano and I can sing comfortably both of these ranges. How long does it take to really clasify a voice and find its natural range?

    • @VerbaVocal
      @VerbaVocal  7 років тому +2

      Don't worry too much about what your voice type is. If you can sing mezzo and Soprano then that is great. Classification isn't really important. Sing and be happy.

    An alto is not a voce classification!!! Is a choral part. Female voice types are: Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano and CONTRALTOS. Contraltos are very very rare, they have very cavernous, robust and booming lower register, an androgynous and powerful sounding middle voice, and an overly bright and usually underdeveloped airy head voice. Most people who claim to be "altos" or "contraltos" are usually just mezzos with wider lower ranges, or simply untrained sopranos who haven't developed their higher register.

      Albert Schmalbert Exactly!! I know she does this videos with the best intentions, but I honestly feel the do most harm than good, because they lead people to think and consider themselves, usually, they are voice type that they're not....and mostly, you can't classify a voice, merely based on range, because from what I've seen in the comments, most people are have highly underdeveloped techniques, so there's no way of truly knowing your vocal fach if your technique sucks anyways lol...For instance, I always thought I was a baritone, and turns out I actually was a Leggero Tenor, but my technique was so bad that I was straining on E4's....under those circumstances It could have lead me to believe I was a bass, which couldn't be further from the truth lol

  • @Cynthia-Sally
    @Cynthia-Sally 6 років тому +182

    Just thing to say, if you don't practice singing, you can't know with this exercice which type of voice you are because, you don't know singing.
    Singing is by a physical point of view, a story of breath, posture and musculature. If you don't know how to breath, how to stand, never you will know the extent of your voice.
    I practice lyrical and modern singing since many years, and at start, I couldn't go further than the highs of an alto. Today, now that I know how to use my vocal cords by liberation (when one knows how to sing, we feel like a full opening of the body, as if our voice resonated all around us, well beyond our skins) and that I have a good posture (it's extremly important, it's the first thing you learn), I turned out to be a soprano.
    But brief, only a very good teacher (and I insist on the very good because many are not and that is the base) can tell you what is your tessitura. But the evaluation of your voice can take several weeks or months for these new singer :) !

    • @savannahsuch7072
      @savannahsuch7072 4 роки тому +6

      Sally Thia That’s very true. Your vocal chords are an instrument and I feel like a lot of people’s vocal ranges can be expanded with work.

    • @mariondumont7634
      @mariondumont7634 4 роки тому +12

      Yes ! I had the same problem before I began to take singing lessons. When they say you can have a good idea of your tessitura with your "comfortable" range, it's not wrong. BUT when you are a beginner, you don't even know what comfortable really means. I was sure to be a mezzo-soprano when I began to sing, because I didn't knew the proper singing techniques (and I'm still learning). So what I considered as my "comfortable" range were my low notes. But now that I took lessons, even though I don't have a lot experience, the difference is huge. And I can feel that it's way more comfortable for me to sing high (I'm a soprano).

    • @sanaindap9248
      @sanaindap9248 4 роки тому +1

      can you tell me what note you could hit before and after training? I feel like I might be a mezzo without training, but I can do falsettos up to c7 so i dont know. my highest belt without straining is like only in the 4th octave though

    • @happyjellycatsquid
      @happyjellycatsquid Рік тому

      @@mariondumont7634 That’s interesting because I’ve always thought I was a mezzo since I tend to speak lower (because I think it makes me look more credible) than it naturally comes to me and because I do a better job in my like, mid-low register but at the same time I do tend to gravitate towards singing everything higher than it actually is and don’t breathe properly 🥲

    Hopefully, people understand that range is not a defining factor for voice type. Like she said, it really depends on where your Break/passagio is and the color and timbre of your voice. Those tend to be the most important things and range is normally the last thing looked at. for one reason there are numerous Mezzo Sopranos which are able to sing in the Soprano range and sopranos who have a dark and warm lower register. Always ask a voice teacher (preferably a classical teacher) to help you figure out your voice type. and remember the voice matures as well. at 21 I was a high tenor now at 25 my voice is filling out and the bottom is so much thicker.

      eternalsilverlight This comment is more helpful than the video for me. Sorry, guys.... I can comfortably sing in nearly 3 octaves so knowing only my range is not enough.

    • @beautifly92
      @beautifly92 6 років тому +4

      Amen! The thickness (lightness) of your voice is what really counts. That’s called tessitura.
      Apart from that, You can also sing those three ranges changing the collocation of your voice to reach those different notes. For example, I use my chest register for the first octave of the “alto range”, then I switch to mixed voice for most of the “mezzo range” and finally i use my head voice for the highest part of the “soprano range”. So sorry but merely knowing your vocal range without even noticing where you resonate your voice when singing won’t be helpful at all.
      Pd: even if I love hitting those E3 with my chest voice, I’m a classically trained soprano and my C4 can’t be heard at all when singing in head voice 😭

    I've always been a soprano and soprano 1 in choir, so I just thought I was a mezzo with a nice upper range. I never really delved into my lower range until about six months ago when I had to rehearse a few songs by men, and we noticed I was able to sing several of the songs sung by tenors without changing the key. So far, I've been able to sing down to a C3 and up to an E6, which has been really cool :) don't let your voice classification limit you ladies, but focus on your range instead😊💗

      range isn’t the most important factor while determining vocal fach. First and foremost, the vocal fach system was initially formulated to be applied only to classically trained singers, thus the reason why so many classical singers and teachers may even call the fact of assigning a vocal fach to a pop or non-classical singer BLASPHEMY. Specially in women, in which they mostly use the “middle voice” or a combination of head and chest registers very early on in their ranges (anywhere from D4-E4) compared to a non-classical female singer who would most likely be singing most of time in a chest dominant mix.
      When people make videos like this one in which people who have undergone little to no formal voice training (whether it is classical or not) they usually led to the average person to believe if that you can hit a certain range of notes, you’re automatically classified and put into a box. That is not the truth. For the most part, human voices usually stretch well beyond 2.5 octaves, and usually vocal ranges overlap between different vocal types.
      Other factors such as the passagio regions, tessitura, output and color play into the voice classification. And that is assuming that the singer in question has at the very least undergone to a minimal degree of vocal training and has an understanding of correct breathing techniques, support and placement.
      The average person watching this video most likely has never had any formal vocal training, and thus you can’t be sure of what voice type you are, unless you actually invest the time and effort to train your instrument and correctly use it. Although by then you’ll see that the least of your worries will be which vocal type are you 😉

    You can’t change your vocal classification. It’s decided on the color of your voice, which is unique. What you CAN change is your range since you can work towards a higher or lower range by training.
    Si no, a contralto can’t be a soprano no matter how hard she tries to (and viceversa).

    Thank you!! This helped confirm mine and my singing teacher's recent suspicions - I'm actually a mezzo. I had been singing soprano repertoire throughout undergrad (deceptively bright timbre, plus my range covers all three of these which is why I got away with it for so long) and it pretty much worked less the older I got. Mezzo repertoire seems to get better technical results - because although I have the capabilities to sing an F3 and a C6, I'm happiest and have the best sound in the A3-A5 range, so definitely mezzo.

    To me I tend to like mezzos. They have much power when they sing in their ranges. Like Adele and Idina Menzel.
    The sopranos can hit high notes no problem but too much high notes (depending on the song) makes it a bit overshooting some portions of the song at least to me. Also, when they try low notes it sounds so artificial.

I sang in school choir for eleven years with a director who was a nightmare. He taught us NOTHING and forced all girls to sing first or second soprano. I wrecked my voice trying to get higher than I could go. Now: twenty plus years later... I really want to attempt to sing again, but I'm realizing that I was likely NEVER anywhere in the soprano range and my comfort area... appears to be below what women are supposed to sing. So what am I??
