      Thanks Darren! It's been a few weeks now and I still can't believe he said "yes." I feel his jazz stuff is plenty well known and I wanted to highlight other stuff he's done that's just as brilliant and is closer to my heart. Luckily, he was game.

    Analogue has become an "option" rather than a "obsolete" process! There are artist in the modern Era that are recording their music on Analogue tape! Given its very few, but tapes are being made for that option!

    Fantastic interview and I am so glad you set this up. You asked a lot of the questions I hoped would be asked when Chad, Michael, and Danny chatted with him. I am glad you asked about sourcing in particular. His answer was exactly as I expected but I am glad you asked regardless.

      Really cool that you saw this and commented. Your excellent "Mastering of Puppets" episode was the first VC video I ever saw, a couple years before I knew there was a VC and started watching videos more regularly. I actually referenced it in my interview with Chris Bellman a couple weeks ago (but confused it with Ride the Lightning in the moment).
      Anyway, glad you dug this. It definitely came from not hearing the questions in those other interviews that I was really curious about. I'm very lucky he was game to talk to someone that doesn't have a huge viewership and I'm thrilled with how it turned out.

    Lovely interview... Also nice to see the discussion cover genres other than jazz. I think my favourite Kevin cut is Sparklehorse's "It's A Wonderful Life", from back in the era when vinyl was imagined a dead format and Capitol had licensed the LP release to an indie label (Devil In The Woods, 2001). Really long record, too. Cut DMM to a single LP and - respectfully - superior to the VMP reissue cut over three sides by Ryan Smith.

    • @brokewithaudiophiletaste6076
      @brokewithaudiophiletaste6076  Рік тому +1

      That's interesting. I'm not aware of him ever having done DMM. I wish I would've known about that one at the time, I would've asked him about it.
      Talking about something other than jazz was a big part of my motivation. There's jazz I like, but I'm a rock and roll guy and that's what I wanted to talk about. Thanks for watching and chiming in!

      @@brokewithaudiophiletaste6076 Kevin Gray should really write a book about these things. It's such a limited circle of people who knows this stuff. I find it fascinating although I'm neither a vinyl freak or audiophile. I've always preferred CDs since I first got my hands on one in the late 1980s, and still do.

    The bombshell occurs at 6:99 when Gray states that the labels themselves asked mastering engineers, and one would assume reissue labels, not to disclose the digital source of the remaster. That implies that MoFi was following label orders at risk of losing access if they refused to participate in the deception

    • @brokewithaudiophiletaste6076
      @brokewithaudiophiletaste6076  2 роки тому +1

      Well, they asked him not to talk about sourcing at all, whether it's analog or digital. For me, in hindsight, it was huge when he said that Sony wouldn't send tapes to the west coast anymore. Maybe that was public knowledge, but that was the first I'd heard of it. If I had connected the dots, I could have deduced that, at minimum, the MoFi Dylans and Miles Davises must have been digital...or if analog a tape copy of the original master. I can imagine that the secrecy is ultimately being decreed by the label, though, and from MoFi's point of view, they're maybe out of business if they go the "analog or nothing" route. I mean, Kassem has found a way, but he's also not doing new cuts of Sony-owned masters as far as I know.

    So glad you asked him about Drastic Plastic.... It's so strange and cool that he even touched that stuff! The Cramps, Death in June , too?!?!?
    He also did Shabazz Palaces' first album " Black Up" on Sub Pop , which no one ever talks about. It's my best sounding Hip Hop lp. What an honor! Congrats! He's really modest about his brilliance.

    • @brokewithaudiophiletaste6076

      Yeah, wording on hype stickers and covers is so hard to decipher. I'm confident that Classic Series LPs are AAA, but I can't prove it. It's just like the Kinks Lola that Kevin and I talk about here. Sticker just says "Re-mastered from the original master tapes". Kevin confirmed that he cut from the tapes, but you wouldn't know that from the sticker wording.
