Hi TB. It's quite simple. The taper (B for linear, A for log/audio) matters more than the value, really; you're using it as a voltage divider, so it's the internal ratio rather than the absolute value that affects the volume. I had good success with a 2.5k mini-pot that I've got rather too many of.
