  • DJI contacted me to try their new Osmo Action 4 camera. It's been pretty sick! The DJI Osmo Action 4 is becoming a seriously good action camera option for anyone wanting to capture surf content.

A POV tutorial using the DJI action 4 camera would be awesome Kale 🙏🏽
I recently bought this camera for surfing.
I haven’t used it yet as I am still doing rehab on an injury.

Got an OSMO Action 3 just after release. I still use it and still love it, I think is a really convenient multi-purpose camera. Only downside (but it applies to every POV camera) is that it's not that good to shoot sessions from the beach, but I've a dedicated camera for it anyway.
    Best!

Thanks Kale, for such an honest review. I've been researching review threads and videos of this camera(vs another brand) and your video answers all the questions I have as a surfer.

Hey Kale, just wanna ask if the magnet holder is strong enough for dji osmo 4 in a barrel surf condition

Is the magnet mount strong? will it come off in a wipeout?

Hey Kale, I think a lot of people (me included) would be stoked to get a best practice video from you about shooting POV in surfing. I just recently started recording my sessions with a GPH10 (seemed the best bang for the buck at the moment) and theres plenty of potential that can be exploited. Concerning my Hero 10, I was disappointed in the beginning because of the battery life (maybe 50-70min with a short time of filming). When not turned off, it melts like butter in the sun. Then I realized that I can let it turned off and directly shoot by pressing the record button, and turn it off automatically when stopping recording. With the enduro battery, I can surf for 4h, record, lets say 25-30 waves (when the conditions are good) and still have around 50% of the battery left. Nice to see that the Osmo has the same function. Reading some reviews about it before buying I was a bit concerned that the camera would overheat, but this will never be a problem when surfing, especially when using the record button to turn it on/off. So cool that you got sponsored! Have a nice day

I read and watched a lot of reviews before buying dji.
It handles hotter and colder differences of temperature the any of the current GoPros.
As far as quality and functionality they’re much of a muchness.
The dji is cheaper and the quick clip in and magnetic release and the three batteries and charger was a top selling point for me.
      I got the adventure pack.
I can’t wait to capture some POV with once I am cleared by the physio.

@@stuartgaylor2420 let me know about your long time experience!
The Hero 10 does the job for me at the moment, I will see how it does in deep winter, 7-8 celsius water, 5 air and 25kph offshore from the north!
      Wish you a speedy recovery

Hey, also you can simply clink the button on the side after recording a video of POV surfing to leave a highlight mark on that video you just took. Then your editing after the session is so much easy because you don't have to go thru every single video that you took in the session. :)

Im concerned with the waterproofing for surfing. My wife grabbed me one for xmas because my hero 9 record button gave up after 30 sessions. Looking to you for how is handles the surf life 2-4 sessions a week type stuff. How is the action 4 holding up so far?

Hey Kale, I’ve been having trouble with popping up on my board lately, I feel I’m placing my back foot to far forward. Is there any tips you have to practice that might help? I would appreciate it, thanks.

yeah it would be super nice to have a little Surf POV Video, maybe a little bit different than the other guys who did it and manly focus on the best settings. it would be more helpful to really get into it. Like what to do when you are in the lineup, where do you place the cam when not filming, and even more important, how do you get good shots, what works and what not, how to film different maneuvers and how to make them look good (from a video and surfing point), how do you film so it doesn´t get boring, different approaches, etc.

BTW I also own a Osmo 4 and I think the camera is pretty capable, however I hate it that the water always switches to other modes. missed couple of good waves because I filmed it in Timelapse. Quality is great, and the footage is smooth. Do you use RS or HB as stabilization?
