    I had a bad experience with one miserable flight instructor. The guy was never friendly with other people and never said hello to me outside the school or flight hours. One day early morning at 6am he sent me a message to my phone stating that lesson has been cancelled due to a bad weather. I’ve replanned my day, after 3 hours the manager call me from the flight school and asked me why I didn’t attend my flying lesson without any notice or explanation. I told him that my flight was cancelled due to a bad weather. The manager said to me that he spoke to the flight instructor and he told him that he didn’t cancelled the flight , the student (me) simply didn’t attend the lesson. I forwarded a screenshot shot from my conversation with a flight instructor to a school manager and told him that I’m not a liar and you should check carefully behaviour of your employees. Since that time I was always avoiding that guy and refusing to have a lessons with him.

    I started my PPL journey at a flight school where I was constantly switched between instructors, all of whom gave me conflicting instructions. I always had to adapt to whoever was flying with me. In essence I had to adjust my checklists and handling of the aircraft based on who was in the cockpit at the time. At times this got very confusing and when I eventually flew with the DFE who was also the owner of the school, I got crapped on and shouted at so badly for not knowing which set of instructions to follow, that it would cause me to mess up totally, sending my anxiety through the roof and would cause me to forget even the most basic checks in the circuit. At times the controls was just grabbed out of my hands, (not to save us from a dangerous situation), with no verbal communication such as "My controls". I assume this was done out of anger because he was suffering from his own dose of anxiety at the time and obviously took it out on me. I have also never had a pre- or post flight briefing of debriefing. Most of the manuvres such as landings, crosswind landings and a few other was never explained to me. Never was I told where I should try and improve or what I should focus on. I had to learn about the roundout, sideslip and dropping a wing into a crosswind on UA-cam. I have had to go through an actual forced landing with another new instructor, who was actually pretty decent. Two weeks after that, the school had a fatal accident after an engine failure. After that incident plus, the flight where the DFE crapped all over me, I decided to move to another school, that wasn't the cheapest on the block, but with a excellent track record. I will be starting there soon.

    I got lucky, I had a CFI who was firm and efficient but also understanding and patient, and when he left for the regionals my new CFI was somehow even better. He embraced ForeFlight and we just had to do paper navlogs for the cross countries. I did a paper navlog for my checkride too but when we diverted my DPE told me I could put it away and the whole time never failed my ForeFlight.

    My CFI just dropped me as a student after completing the dual XC work saying that I wasn’t listening to him or was dismissive of his advice.
    Problem was that I began to see him as a fellow crew member instead of the student/teacher role.
    I’m blaming the issue on communication… or lack thereof.

    I had a bad CFI during an aircraft checkout. I wasn’t really familiar with the airport and after I landed and cleared the runway, I was doing my after landing checklist and he went nuts saying the hold line was another 25 feet ahead which didn’t have a sign and the pavement marking were faded. He didn’t sign me off, referred me to the chief flight instructor for a re-checkout and told me I could have been cited for an incursion even though I was cleared to land, landed and I hadn’t switch over to ground yet. The chief flight instructor offered a different CFI and I didn’t have to fly with him, (the chief himself) for the checkout.

    I agree. CFI is critical. There are 3 ways folks learn. 80% of people are visual, some are auditory, some go by feeling. If you are the latter, I suggest you find a different skill to learn. With the other two, your CFI needs to match or be adept enough to learn quickly which you are. Great information Trent!

    Hey Trent, I've been following this channel for a while now, and I was wondering your thoughts on the future of pilots in aviation. I'm a tad bit worried about of if the role of a co-pilot will exist in the near future. Looking at how human pilots are cause for many aircraft crashes & how the "flight engineer" role was phased out back in the late 1980s, it's hard for me to see how airline companies will continue with a standard 2-person cockpit. I hope that this isn't the case, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

    • @trent_dyrsmid
      @trent_dyrsmid  10 днів тому

      @@pryo6382 I think that insurance companies rule aviation, and there is absolutely no benefit to an insurance company to have a single pilot in a cockpit. I also think the pilot unions will fight it like mad. Just because the technology exist does not mean that it’s feasible to implement it anytime soon. With all that said, these are just my thoughts and I really don’t have a crystal ball on this particular topic. obviously, if I thought that my job was gonna go away in the next couple of years I never would’ve gone down this path to begin with.
