I'm from India. Growing up, I had developed condescension towards older, less educated, beedi huffing folks purely due to my ego. Nisargadatta obliterated that. In him, I now see a philosopher, a sage, an enlightened being. I've been humbled like never before.
What strikes me is how he denies that one is not just the Self, but also the finite creature, which is largely accepted in the West: that we are on the cross, as it were. Not sure I can accept the teaching that the little I and body don't have any existence and are to be denied all reality. It is the most extreme teaching possible. The question always emerges, if so, then why are we here, in an apparent world, in these apparent bodies, if none of it is true at all. Does the teaching lack nuance? In other teachings, they say that the world is like a dream, for example, but not totally a dream; they allow for a more nuanced view. Is the simplicity of this teaching to its credit, or perhaps to its detriment, I wonder out loud. Even if this teaching is good for approaching death, does one want to live his life like this?
If we were sages before birth ... how can we lose it? How can a sage lose his consciousness? If that was possible what is the point of being a sage? Clearly we were not sages before birth. If we are all one ... how come we are not all one? Can we really dismiss this body and world as useless falsehoods? Is God that stupid? Something quite wrong about all these ideas .... even though he is transmitting light strongly, he doesn't really understand the existential situation. Like many Indian gurus, it doesn't really matter what he says ... he is simply transmitting light.
If you truly believe each word that you have written here, you wouldn't have bothered writhing and wasting your time. "You" want to believe but you don't want to believe. I hope you understood what I meant.
