In some levels, you can't get PERFECT because you can't collect all rings.
About the multiplayer Special Stages, they are the same 5th, 6th and 7th Special Stages, but with altered palettes. I thought interesting to play them too, because it's not about "collect a number of rings", but who collected more rings, Sonic or Tails?
I let Tails win the first, Sonic the second, and a perfect TIE at the last... this was very cool !
The other Special Stages in competition (if you get tied at the zones) are the same 2nd, 4th and 6th, with the same palettes! I don't played these.
The problem with this run is about the 5th special stage. When I made it at the first time, I collected 8 rings at the top, and 7 rings at the diagonals.
But, when I remade it in multiplayer, I got 9 rings at the top and 8 rings at the diagonals. Therefore, it could be better!
I tried to edit the movie but no success, it desynchs, so I would have to remake all the 5th Special Stage... but I'm very lazy to do it, it takes too long to remake, so I finished the run and this was the result!
Because of it, this run is not perfect. It can be considered as a [Work In Progress], but not as a final version, and also I don't know if I intend to continue this in the future, probably not.

Didn't even know there WAS a Perfect Bonus for the S2 Special Stages. Funny how it's only possible on 3 stages.

It's theoretically possible with one player if you're playing as Sonic & Tails, but you have to master Tails' movement delay. The hardest part of the first Special Stage is successfully getting all the blocks of 6 rings in the second section... similarly with the blocks of 9 and 10 in the 3rd Special Stage. The 6th special stage requires moving Tails separately for sure, for the double helix of rings in the second section and the separate groups of rings at the start of the third section.
@@WaterCrane But there’s no delay! This could be a 2 player tas where P1 Tas controls sonic when P2 tas controls tails. Sometimes sonic jumped but tails didn’t or ect.

I've been waiting to see someone do this for as many stages possible. I've only seen it been proved on the first one. Considering you did this alone without a 2nd person helping you out is even more of an achievement. Overall, this is great stuff.

TAS must be fun because you get to do difficult tricks and you get to use save states, and when you finish the TAS with constantly using states, it must feel REALLY satisfying.
That's why I love make TASes ;)
I have managed like two times in Special stages 1 and 3 for about 22 years of Sonic 2 to ever get a Perfect bonus (in normal playthrough) from both stages ... It's incredibly hard, at least for me to get it... Thanks for sharing this video.

So I randomly did some research on an old Sonic 2 hack called Sonic 2z and wanted to see all the ring requirements when using Sonic & Tails, and are as follows:
SS1: 50, 110, 175
SS2: 70, 130, 170
SS3: 75, 120, 180
SS4: 50, 140, 180
SS5: 65, 120, 220
SS6: 90, 170, 240
SS7: 115, 205, 240

Finally, I found a ring attack TAS of this game mode after all these years, and it is a great effort too! I've never seen perfect clears in this game mode before! What happens it you get hit by a spike trap?
you lose 10 rings when touched
Some things to note:
He missed one ring in the second Special Stage--had he gotten that, he would have gotten a Perfect Score.
He actually got every ring in Stage 4--the game simply refused to reward him with the Perfect Bonus for some reason (probably a glitch).
Although the TASer seemed to acknowledge an error in Stage 5, the branching ring paths at the start makes getting every ring in said stage impossible.
Finally, the fact that he just barely got over half the rings during that last section alone while being Perfect in the first two sections makes it pretty bloody clear that getting the Perfect Bonus in the 7th Special Stage to be outright impossible.
So here's the tally; it's impossible to get a Perfect Bonus in Stage's 4, 5, and 7, with the former being the result of a bug rather than any fault on the TASer's part. Stage 2 is possible, but very tricky to pull off. And Stage's 1, 3 and 6 are definitely possible.
2:40 That first ring in that group of 4 is where the TASer messed up with the Stage 2 Perfect.
@Perfect Game Walkthroughs I made some tests in this stage 2 while making this TAS... and I concluded that it's impossible to get both rings (top and floor)
I tried it a lot, frame perfectly, and it's really impossible, even with 2 players. So I had to choose, if I get the top ring, I lose the floor ring... and I only can get the floor ring if I miss the top one. So, it's impossible to get the 2 rings in this moment, I had to lose one of them (unfortunately)
About Special Stage 4, LOL, I really got ALL rings but the game didn't give me the Perfect (aaah this is bad)
About Special Stage 5, It's really impossible to get all rings... and yes, I commited a mistake and it's explained better at description (very probably you read it)
About Special Stage 7 (the last part), the rings looks random for a first time, but there is a pattern that repeat sometimes. The best result I got was taking 12 rings with one character and 9 with other (Sonic & Tails) or (Tails & Sonic) whatever.

You missed some in special stage 2 and 4 that are not impossible to get
Special Stage 2: It's a choice: Miss one ring at the top OR miss one ring at the bottom. It's impossible to get ALL.
Special Stage 4: One ring missed at the last. There are 15 rings, and it's only possible to get at maximum 14. I chose to lose the first middle ring.

I don't see how mentioning the time makes a difference the special stages don't alter depending on the rings that are picked up. The time as far as I'm concerned is irrelevant?

Why is the aspect ratio a little off, I dunno might be my head
I rendered this video in 4:3 format, but I wanted it to stay true to the original proportion, so I leave "maintain aspect ratio" enabled.
Also, resolution is very bad at Special Stages, if the screen is a little small, it can be a little better for watch (a little...)
