There is a place for the Ugly Stick, for sure. And using high end equipment is a joy. But these last few years I have studied my target species and tried to learn why they do what they do and when they do it. It has made me more successful. Which in turn makes it more fun. I have also found that I need less equipment which actually makes it simpler and cheaper. Tackle companies try to catch the fishermen, not so much the fish I think. A big step in budget fishing is sometimes to leave a lot of items in the store.
First of all I am stealing that line, "Tackle companies try to catch the fishermen, not so much the fish..." That perspective is exactly right! The next line, "A big step in budget fishing is sometimes to leave a lot of items in the store, LOL..." also stolen! 😂🤣. I hope this channel helps budgeting anglers everywhere to strategize their purchase of high end gear so that they can experience the joy that you and I experience. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I am an ultralight angler, and fished with low end gear before making the switch to high end JDM gear, and I will never go back. Sensitivity, action, quality, literally everything is a lot better than anything I was fishing with. I can play fish better, I get better and smoother drag, my combos are beyond light, and it makes my fishing that much more fun. Even made the switch to higher end lines from Varivas and it makes a difference. All you need is 1 definitley!
You're absolutely right with your points. As someone who not only fishes bass but steelhead and salmon as well, we use rods between 9 to 13 feet long. You definitely will feel a weight and balance difference between a mainstream rod versus a high-end rod and that is the same for bass rods. I have really bad tendinitis on my right shoulder from a work injury, and a heavier unbalanced combo will make for a painful drive home. That's why I only buy premium to high-end rods and reels now. The experience is so much better as well as you get good warranty as well with most high-end equipment. People don't understand that we use high-end gear for the experience.
Your channel has taught me to watch prices on rods and reels and also the weights of rods and reels. I got some great deals on black friday sale's last year on rods and reels thank you so much
It’s actually been decades, I’m sad to say, since I’ve had true high-end tackle. Yet, for certain styles and techniques the benefits of GOOD high end gear cannot be overstated. The sensitivity and responsiveness of the rods, as well as the improved casting and drag systems of the reels are alone a great reason. As for the latter ( reels) I mostly have caught average Largemouth and the like most of my life, but when I hooked into my PB at 7.7 pounds, you’ll suddenly become aware of every single flaw in your drag lol. You also pointed out something that isn’t talked about enough, which is the weight savings. When I was a young man, like most I could just go all day. Weight and distance weren’t a thing at all. But now, waaaay past my teens and twenties I can’t lug gear all around the shoreline and the arthritis developing in my shoulders remind me that I no longer like heavier rods and reels. I’m glad you touched on that point !
Thank You Very Much! I try to make this experience of buying this equipment as much of a personal reflection as possible. There are so many professional Bass fishermen either need or who have had have surgery in part due to the equipment we use for this sport. I know Gary Dobyns of Dobyns Rods. He will tell you the physical cost of being the best Professional Bass fishermen on the west coast. He used to live near me in a town called Oroville but now he lives in Texas. He has won 39 fully rigged bass boats in his career, the most of any angler in the sport, and he paid the price in part with multiple surgeries. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

Some very nice combos that can make your overall time on the water more enjoyable. Especially if you budget and look for savings on them and lures as well. Have you seen the new Daiwa zillion rod series? Looks like the Expride series. Have a great week and thanks for the video!
Thank You Very Much for your comment! Yes I have seen the new Daiwa Zillion rod series. They are BEAUTIFUL! Although they have some Steez tech and some monocoque tech, I am concerned that it is a low modulus blank. For an over $300 rod, I question its value. That said, I am going to buy one to test out. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
MY MY My! I wish some of our exclusive budget combo anglers would just save up a couple of dollars and buy just one high end combo. I will upsurge their passion for the sport. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I agree! They fish so much better & sensitivity is on another level. I don't have super high end stuff but it's pretty decent. I have a Shimano Expride B 6' 10" med-heavy bait caster with a curado mgl-150 reel & a Expride B 7' light spinning rod with a 2500 vanford. The Expride B light spinning rod power is heavier than most light's! I would consider it a medium -light. It is a excellent med-light rod though! I also have a Shimano zodias 6' 9" medium spinning rod but I would not buy another because I broke the tip off waaaay to easily barley pulling on a snag? I didn't spend full price on any of my rods or reels. I saved & waiting patiently until TW had good sales then pulled the trigger. Saved myself 25-30% of all of it!
Your Expride combos are very high end. Each combo is over $500 full retail. I have mentioned in my review of the Expride B that the rod seems to have a spiritual desire to be the best reaction bait rod on the market. This includes even crappie baits, LOL! Bummer on the Zodias but Congrats on the Savings! If you have a Shimano authorized dealer in your city or county you may want to talk to them about options to get a replacement rod. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Good idea! I will check & see if I have any local Shimano dealers. I got mine online so I'm not sure if I have any close. I love bothy Expride B combos! I would buy them again & recommend them to anyone! They are high end to me but when I look at other stuff that's $800+ for a single rod or reel. Then I wouldn't consider the Expride B high end in comparison. I can't imagine what a 1600+ combo feels like? I personally don't think I could stomach such an expensive combo. At least not right now. But anyone who can, that's awesome for them!
Thank you so very much for your kind words! People don’t realize how much easier life would be if we just start off with our best effort and presentation. As you said in your comment, it is truly amazing how you can be fed in the process. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

i can't totally agree with that because there is a point of diminishing returns on tackle where you have to spend so much more to get so little. and you have to think about what you use the combo for I have found sometimes a less sensitive rod makes me concentrate more which equals more fish . when fishing moving baits, it's good to fish a rod with a little more forgiveness. Spend your money on bottom contact stuff. I do agree that lightness matters. and that's the biggest benefit to using high end stuff. thanks for sharing.
I don't think we are far apart even where you might disagree with me. The sweet spot for high end differs for each of us, but overall I believe the a sweet spot is at the $200 - $250 before those "diminishing returns" kick in. However since this channel focuses on how to legally and ethically reduce the cost of acquiring high end equipment, the full retail price is more of an info reference learn what tech is in the equipment. In other words I want to help other get that $200-$250 potential purchase price to somewhere below $100 out of pocket. My examples are my $150 combos purchased for $80, my Jackhammers for less than $7 each, and my $325 Envy 2 rods for $125. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Have you tried Bull Bay rods? Made in Lakeland Florida, I have 3. Extremely sensitive, strong and excellent warranty…you truly get what you pay for. Diawa BG MQ reels are pretty sweet as well.
Malik, thank you my man. I MUST implement your system. Trying to dial it in. I love my Carbon Lites. I know you love your Vanfords, but I'm going to check out the new Stradic. Love bumping up my game and watching you will definitely help. God bless you sir.
Thank You So Very Much for your kind words! The Stradic is a great reel! The only reason I don't own one is because I get the Vanfords so cheap. If I were merely getting discounts, my arsenal would be full of Stradics. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Fatigue was a big reason why I started buying either lighter or more high end rods and reels. More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better though. I started out inshore fishing with a Penn spinfisher v 3500 and have since moved to fishing either a shimano nasci 2500 or daiwa fuego 2500 for most of the fishing i do inshore. I have much more expensive reels but i really like the lightness of those reels. I fish them on St Croix Avid rods. I also have a higher end baitcaster rod and reel that cost over $500 and i really love the feel and weight of it, I think it weighs maybe 10z. I just dont like taking it out because it was so expensive
I am sure your body thanks you for the decision to sacrifice a little more cash for health reasons. I definitely understand the humility of not talking alot about high end gear, but that is just the information that others of similar perspectives need to hear. One of the reasons I started this channel is to help other buy this lighter higher end gear for as close to budget prices as possible. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Thanks for stopping by the channel! I appreciate your kind words, and I am glad to be a part of some of your decision-making on some great combos and other tackle. I look forward to talking to you more as videos are producing posted. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣😂
@@familybudgetfisherman thanks for being so helpful for the community brother! You will definitely see engagement from me I can’t get enough of the educational content on new toys out there lol
Oh I forgot about my big swimbait set up, somehow? I also have a DiawaTatula 7' 10" Heavy Mod-fast action rated up to 6oz paried with a Diawa Lexa 300 reel. It's been an exceptional big swimbait rod! Good for glide baits & big soft baits. I've been throwing Klash9, 8" shad glide, 8" &10" magdrafts, Defiant 210, & some line throughs also. I can throw 6" swimbaits with ease also but I usually stick with 8-10 inch baits mostly. My 5 biggest largemouth for 2023 with big swimbaits was 7.4 - 8.05 - 8.6 - 9.3 & my current PB an 11.4!!!
Now that I think about it, I’ve never had any kind of equipment failure in my higher-end stuff. And when you think about the money spent divided by the life of the gear, it almost pays for itself. I remember replacing the same cheap reel three times at $30 each before I just bought something that was $80, and it lasted me until I sold it
I fully understand what you are saying. However, when someone has a very limited amount of money to be able to spend, it makes it hard to afford something like that. Yes, planning a purchase helps. A lot. But, it is also something where for someone like me, it might take a couple of years of saving back to get a rod and reel like that. Like, I might have to buy a rod by itself once and wait until I can afford the reel later on. Both of which, I will have to save up for. Especially when I still don't know how to use anything that is a spinning reel or baitcaster. (I spent 30 years not fishing because of trauma and not having any gear or license to do so, meaning that I have a lot to learn and it isn't easy for me to do so). I am disabled, so the little bit of money I have, I have to watch every penny. Eventually, I will try and get a higher end combo. For now, I am sticking to what I know how to use with a spincast combo and even then, I am using very budget friendly gear. Zebco stuff at Walmart. I just haven't been able to afford anything else. One day, I want to get there. I really do. It will just take me a long while. Fortunately, thanks to a friend, I was able to get me a couple of new reels to replace what had stopped working. (I don't know enough to know how to fix a reel yet, and when I tried on one of them, the entire reel broke on me). So not disagreeing with you, just saying, please take into account people like me who might have to save money up for something like that, because while $150 might not feel like a lot of money for some, $150 can be a lot for someone who is disabled. Like, I will never get a $300+ combo. I just do not see the point in spending that much or saving that much when I am not a tournament fisher, don't own a boat or kayak and am limited to bank fishing most of the time when I am able to go, which is once or twice a month.
I have taken into consideration of those of you who have greater challenges to enjoy this passion of ours than others. in that video I showed you a combo that had a full retail value of $150 for which I paid $80 total. My Ugly Stick alone was $59.99. My $80 Skeet Reese rod cost me $35. My $100 Shimano SLX cost me $7 (that's seven dollars). I'm sure that $35 and $7 are at or below Zebco rods sold at Walmart. I do alot of research daily to find these deals and most of the time I find them within a 30 day window. The purpose of this channel is to share with you various ways to buy a $300 combo for less than $100 or a $150 combo for less than $80. Now we have cut the daily, weekly, or monthly savings challenge from over a year to 3 or 4 months. Now how does that sound? 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
After all my rods except one got broken from bouncing around in the back of a pickup truck going down a logging road for two hours I ended up buying a bunch of Ugly Sticks for traveling and my nice stuff stays at home for walking around a lake and my musky stuff for boat fishing. It's funny having an Ugly Stik and an expensive reel.
If I can purchase one I sure will do the review. That said, I generally only review rods that are retailed in the U.S. Thanks for the thoughtful wonder. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
That last line sorta kept me humble. Was gonna splurge a lot of on Stella FK (and tbh, if I find a good sale, I still might), but I might settle for Vanford 2024 cause its more budget friendly while still upping the budget and quality stuff. Comparison between Stella and Vanford even worth debating, or is it about fitting in budget. Any advice would be great, cheers~
Hopefully, I can help you with options so that you don’t feel like you have to settle for one over the other. You can choose based on what performance you’re looking for. Again, dear, you mean by email and we can discuss it off-line. Familybudgetfisherman@gmail.com 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Like your videos and reviews. You ever going to give Edge rods either their epitome or silver widow series a try? Edge always have sales and i just pick up two silver widows for 45 percent off recently. Suprise not much review on them. They are just as sensitive as my destroyer and nrx + just slight heavier. They do take a few weeks to arrive though. The 7 foot medium light epitome weight 2.55oz can't wait to give it a try.
Thank you for your support of the channel. I do plan to purchase a Black Widow and a Silver Widow Edge Rod. I took an interest in them back in 2022 but other deals came up that were better at that time. 45% off was a great deal for Edge Rods. Stay tuned for July or early August for me to both purchase and do a first look at those rods. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I finally bumped up off the $39/49 reels to $100/120 a man what an enjoyable difference. I do want to spring for a Poison Adrena, but the wife is watching....
Yes indeed! A very refreshing difference! Option 1 - Save just $40 each month for 12 months and you have the money for any one of the Poison Adrenas on Tackle Warehouse or Omnia Fishing or American Legacy Tackle. Option 2 - Ask Everyone to buy you a gift card to Tackle Warehouse or Omnia Fishing or American Legacy Tackle for any special days in your life such as your birthday and wedding anniversary. Instruct everyone to buy E-gift cards from only ONE online store; don't give them a choice of all 3. Now your monthly savings is cut down to about 6 months. BTW ask the wife to help, you may even get that rod faster. Blessings 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Hi, I like to know if you ever looked at the 13 Fishing, Oman Gold spinning rod ? They are on sale & Im thinking of a 6'9" ML. Or Med. I have only seen them in photos. My Girlfriend has a Black Omen ML. 6'9" your thoughts on the Gold ? Thanks. Ray S.
I haven’t fished with the Omen Gold Series. They have great blanks and they are beautiful rods. There are great sales on them. I’ll try to acquire one. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I am currently wanting to add a decent crappie rod to my line up. Any recommendations? I wanna be able to throw 1/32 crappie jigs with my zman micro finesse baits. I thought I was going to be able to double duty my Shimano Expride B 7' light spinning rod as a crappie jig rod also. But it doesn't like to throw anything lighter than 1/8 oz baits & I have 7 lb floro on it. What rod , reel would you recommend for 1/32 crappie jigs my bugget max is 400 range for full combo. Thanks for all great info!!!
My great Crappie setup would be the following: Rod - St. Croix Victory, medium light extra fast spinning rod (VTS73MLXF) Reel - Daiwa Tatula MQ or the Shimano Vanford. Both in the 2500 size. Line - Seaguar Tatsu 8 pound test 100 percent fluorocarbon or the P-Line Fluoroclear 6 pound test.
$200 seems to be the sweet spot for high end rods for me. More than that makes very little difference in my opinion. Pretty much the same blank with more expensive components which makes very little difference when it comes to sensitivity or actual fishing. Fishing line is actually more important.
I agree. Even though I have very high end gear, I notice the aggressive leap in quality and performance once rods are sold above $200. The quality still appreciates as rods get to $600 but it is VERY GRADUAL. ALSO Rod blanks are like automobile engines. The chassis, interior, and accessories may be different but the engine is exactly the same. Shimano, Daiwa, Megabass, and St. Croix have all mastered using the same rod blank with different wraps and components. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Malic the {FISHING }FREAK !! I apologize I don't know how the spell your name! I think you are right though ...I do need some high end fishing gears!!🤣🤣🤙
It’s “Mali”. However No worries on the spelling of my name, lol. Start saving. Opportunities to make great purchases for higher end equipment will be coming during fall season. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Oh you can! You have birthdays and other special days that people may buy you gifts. Encourage them to buy you gift cards instead of a physical gift to a fishing tackle store of your choice. Additionally you save at least $20 per month for at least 10 months. At the end of 10 months you should have at least $350 in cash and giftcards. That should be enough to buy your high end combo. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
@@familybudgetfisherman Lol, for one I am too old for birthday presents. And two, I live in Illinois where you get taxed to death. Every penny we save is going towards getting out of this state. If we get out and move to Tn., then I can save for nicer things with no problem. Just hope I can live long enough to get out, lol!!!
Well, like you, we are in an even higher tax state called California! Back in 2019, after our older four children had graduated, moved out and attended universities in different states, my wife and I were trying to move to Chattanooga, Tennessee. However, the Lord redirected us north to Redding California. Our oldest daughter has children here in California so the consolation prizes we at least get a chance to see our grandchildren on a regular basis. I definitely understand your plight. 😂 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Never put the hook on a eye, especially a high end rod. Put it on the hook keeper, if it has one, or behind the eye on the legs of the eye. Never in the eye, it can chip the inserts. You should know this.

Just came across your channel loving the content. Now to buy some more combos 😂
You are welcome! Again I certainly appreciate you. Happy Independence Day !👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Other great video with great advice.I look forward to you next one. What are your thoughts on First Gen baits so far
I will have to say, 1st gen baits are pretty good! I am surprised by how well they are as the 1st iteration of baits from that company. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Wow with that type of setup and baits you are looking for PB's! an 11.4 is AMAZING!! Congrats! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Now that I think about it, I’ve never had any kind of equipment failure in my higher-end stuff. And when you think about the money spent divided by the life of the gear, it almost pays for itself. I remember replacing the same cheap reel three times at $30 each before I just bought something that was $80, and it lasted me until I sold it
Well said. like you I have some of those budget equipment horror stories. Higher end equipment just has greater endurance overall. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
LOLOL! You had a storage while transport challenge. I like how you solved it. 😂🤣👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I would love to see you doing a review on the 2024 Shimano Jackall Poison Adrena launched recently in Japan.
If I can purchase one I sure will do the review. That said, I generally only review rods that are retailed in the U.S. Thanks for the thoughtful wonder. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Nice set ups.
Thank You Very Much!
@familybudgetfisherman nice keep the content coming. Tight lines this Summer.
Thank you so very much! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Coupon Code for any Edge Rods at the moment is July40 .This will take 198.00 off any Edge rods beside delta series.
@TouXai thanks! I’m placing an order.👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Like your video it’s very informative
Thank You Very Much! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
By the way…I love your videos!
Thank You So Very Much! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
High end combos are like a nice suit. You might not need one every day, but you’ll need one at some point in your life. 😂
Exactly!👍🏿 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Don't have stress! It's just fishing🤣🤣🤣
absolutely!
My great Crappie setup would be the following:
Rod - St. Croix Victory, medium light extra fast spinning rod (VTS73MLXF)
Reel - Daiwa Tatula MQ or the Shimano Vanford. Both in the 2500 size.
Line - Seaguar Tatsu 8 pound test 100 percent fluorocarbon or the P-Line Fluoroclear 6 pound test.
TRUE , BRO !!!
Thank You 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I had some cheaper setups but when i started spending more on my setups (still buying on sale) i used the cheaper setups less and less.
Oh yeah. That happens to all of us. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Absolutely agree with you!! Great information!!
Thank You So Very Much!
@@familybudgetfisherman thank you for the info! I love your channel and hearing your calming voice!
Banshee, Sniper and Bolt
I have heard of the banshee rod, but I’m not for me with sniper and bolt. Give me a little more information on it. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I wish I could afford higher quality, even at budget prices, lol!!!
I do know this...I beg your forgiveness of this angling transgression. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Hey, what's wrong with hot dogs and hamburgers?? 😅
NOTHING! I love them, LOL! However some days I want gumbo. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
@@familybudgetfisherman 🤣👊
Don't do it, it's an addiction!!😁!
LOL. To late, I'm in too deep already!🤣 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
@@familybudgetfisherman Me too!
those setups is not what you call high end ! 🤣🤣
I sense sarcasm dripping from your comment, lol! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I got a 50$ bass pro shop rod with a 40$ Abu garcia bait caster from walmart and it works just fine there is no need for expensive combos..
It helps to watch the entire video before you comment lol
@shorefishingontario it helps if they don't put a dumb title that isnt clickbait.
Thanks for watching the video. I appreciate your time. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
Clickbait suggest that I was not talking about the subject matter that the title mentioned. Your criticism suggests you’re very creative, so please recommend to me what would have been a better title for the video. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I wasn't looking to watch the video just seen the title and left a comment , why do you even feel the need to comment back if I'm in the wrong lol. Js I have a ol cheapo combo that catches everything
