  • KifiSOS | Kifissos "zero hour" #shorts
The solution to the traffic problem in Athens has been sought for decades. Dealing with the increased traffic in one of the most burdened axes of the basin, Kifissos, is now imperative.
Kifissos is the road with the greatest traffic congestion in Greece. In recent years, the number of vehicles passing through Kifissos on a daily basis is shocking, according to measurements, almost 16,000 vehicles pass per hour during peak hours (8-9 in the morning) and a total of 152,000 vehicles per day which literally " are sinking" Kifisou Avenue.
Taking into account the traffic congestion index of the TomTom website, Athens is ranked 25th worldwide out of 390 sampled cities, while it is 12th in Europe in terms of city center traffic, with the position being reduced to the 4th worst in Europe when analyzed at the level of metropolitan areas. So it seems that unlike other cities where their traffic problem is located in their center, in Athens the delays intensify throughout the Attica basin.
The pace of life and work defines movement in everyday life, especially after the COVID era. Usually, the first sudden "wave" of delays in Kifissos starts at 8.00 in the morning, while the second "wave" starts from 15.00 and peaks at 17.00 - 18.00 on a daily basis except at the weekend when the traffic on the Avenue is noticeably smooth.
Mr. Konstantinos Kepaptsoglou, associate professor at the Transport Engineering Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens, states that "in the morning we all leave at about the same time for our work. At 8.00 to 9.00 the large volume of workers move, but they usually return in waves, as these movements are combined with others that may have a different purpose. So that's why the morning wave is very crowded, unlike the afternoon one. It is a common phenomenon that we observe all over the world."
The main north-south axis in Athens, Kifissos, every morning and noon is full of cars and for many it is the worst road they have to cross every day. Answering whether Kifissos can really be used as the worst avenue or if there is a specific street that can be called "the worst", the professor comments. "There is no worse road. The problem is more global and the phenomenon is much more complicated than a problematic road. The road is problematic in terms of traffic mainly because more people are using it than it can handle. Kifissos has exceeded its endurance for many years."
The only way to improve traffic in the capital in general and Kifissos in particular is to reduce the use of cars. "Let's stop taking our car. There is no other way. If we put two more lanes in Kifissos, he will have the same problem. The solution is not to have more capacity because it also costs us and it is not certain that it will do the job we want. The solution is to use other means as much as possible. Unfortunately, there is no magic way to unblock Kifissos.
However, using other means or avoiding travel altogether for a day can yield significant benefits, not only for drivers but also for the environment. According to TomTom, if someone works from home on the day with the worst traffic, which in this website's index is Wednesday, they will save an annual €171 in petrol, while avoiding the emission of 195 kg of carbon dioxide and "get back" 45 hours of life that would be wasted stuck in traffic.
Since last December in Kifissos, the platform of the Attica Region has been assisting the road safety vans operating on the avenue, having contributed to the management of 1,004 accidents. And the daily traffic accidents should be 4-5 vehicles.
Of these 1,004 incidents that have occurred in the last two years in Kifissos, 75% occurred on the rise, 62.5% concern mechanical breakdowns of the vehicles, while the percentage of collisions amounts to 37.5%.
