Girl yes get a port if your docs are willing to do it and give your veins some rest!! A lot of kiddos I work with have ports and it makes things so much easier mentally and physically when they come in for admissions and they know they don’t have to be poked!! I’m not sure how it is in Canada, but in the U.S they can also draw labs from ports! So no more waking up to needles hahaha so glad to see you uploading again❤️❤️

I have had my port since April and I am loving it! I don’t have to be hospitalized anymore for antibiotics or fluids. The only thing I hate is the heparin for flushing. I am allergic to all adhesive and get the IV 3000 too! That is the bonus to the port if you don’t need it no dressing if not accessed

I’m on my 4th port and I couldn’t live without it! So much easier than pic lines! I prefer my port on my chest as it’s a lot more comfortable than my sides! Xxxx

I’m getting a port on the 23rd of November! I really just wanted more flexibility in my treatments and I’m losing the ability to be accessed via peripheral iv due to scar tissue. I’ve heard it’s way more comfortable than a picc and you can get numbing cream for accessing.

Hi Eliza, yes ports are way better (in my opinion). Yes it needs flushing 4-6 weekly but, it's under the skin, the needle can be left in up to 14 days. BUT make sure only qualified nurses touch your port. If they don't know what to do, ask for someone who does. I've found cancer nurses are often really good with ports if there isn't anyone around.

  • @sonia15702

I have a port and I love it ! It only needs flushing 4-6 weekly but I understand many in the USA do theirs. We here in Australia generally aren't allowed to do it ourself. But I'd rather have a port any day over continual PICCs !

i think you should get a port! i have a similar illness to CF so my lungs always have me in & out of the hospital & constant flare ups or infections & my veins have basically got such bad scarring that they had to last minute do the vein in my neck & said that i should start considering a port because it’s less likely of you always being sticked, they can keep it in for years if there’s no complications and it’s less chances of you being in the hospital if you’re able to do meds at home

Yep, I’ve had over 30 PICC’s. Even for emergencies they cannot get any IV access in me any more. I’m currently in hospital too, but not up to blogging at the moment videoing videoing. I live in Melbourne Australia (in the state of Victoria: had to laugh at that as Canada has a Victoria as well). I don’t get any visitors any more. I’m older than you, okay the bit, a bit more than a bit. LOL. I need to try to leave as many hospital type clothes where my support worker can get to them. As many times I’ve had clothes sent in that I’m not comfortable, or don’t work with different tubes I’ve got.. I must say - I’m always so jealous that you guys get a bath! We just get a shower - the only places in the hospitals with a bath maternity. (And I’m talking about private hospitals). I’m literally up to week 13 in hospital for the year - not all in a row, but seven of them there.. People without a chronic illness have no clue what it is really like… You’re a superstar - I love your hair! I dyed mine last time I was in hospital... i’m sure the cleaners loved me. LOL. But they didn’t seem to mind. Take care :-) big Covid free gentle hug from Oz 🧡🦋🌈🇦🇺❣️ PS: also jealous that you get to actually leave. I’m barely able to leave my room - in factory very rarely, and it’s normally only to go to radiology! Enjoy...

I have a port and its a lifesaver! Its so comfortable for IV antibiotics or anything really. I did have sepsis this summer and a thrombosis in my neck because of it. I have to take blood thinners for as long as I have a port now. Its definitely not risk free unfortunately. But so worth it, especially for chronic illness people who need to be accessed lots of times and who have no access points left.👍🏻

I would def ask about port - your u are only young and having trouble, as you get older you will need more and more treatments, I would ask how they are going to keep gaining PICC access for the next few decades if they can’t now? I’ve had both - prefer port but if you are prone to infections harder to remove but only accessed when required. And accessing it doesn’t hurt, initial surgery a bit sore but connecting for treatment doesn’t hurt

Hi Nana !!! Just wondering why you won't get a port a Cath in ? So much easier that PICC lines each time and you can flush it at home or a nurse can do it ? Poor you in adult hospital. Why do they make kids hospitals so nice then as a adult the rooms and food is revolting and everything else !! Love from Australia. Sonia x

I'm a bit older than you. I have had both picc and VAD(port) I have had two differnt ones don't know what they offer now. depends how often you go in. I used to go in every 3 months at your age. As i got older i went less, not sure why. So when I was younger I had the port. I recommend it. It doesn't hurt to access once it heals of course. It's so easy to take care of as well. As I watch your video you couldn't shower. At St pauls they will saran wrap your arm with water proof tape and then you can shower. It's hard because you can't bend your arm but it's better then what you did.
Good luck. If you need to talk contact me. :) Been at st pauls for over 27 years. Also don't leave any valuables in your room every. ST pauls has a ton of theft normally, I guess because of covid it's been quiet because not many visitors. But yeah, I knew people who had their enzymes stolen... They must not have felt good after taking those! LOL
