    Heifetz and Kogan could play this really well - nobody else. Now Antal Zalai. Bravo!!!!!!!

    Too often this piece is used by violinists as a mere vehicle to show off. Very few are able to dig deep into the music and move the listener. They indulge in facial grimaces and body contortions, but what comes out of their instruments leaves me cold and unimpressed. However, Mr. Zalai is an exception. He is an artist-violinist who does not disappoint. His technique serves the music and not the other way around.

    Interesting version! He brings out so many nice little musical details and nuances that are often lost by soloists that just treat this piece as a vehicle to show off their technique, especially in the finale.

    Great violinists are extraordinary beings. They're like supermen or superwomen, half aliens, half gods, I don't know how to explain it, but it's wonderful to see them play.
    Being a violinist myself, I can appreciate how brilliant they are. Currently, there are many renowned violinists in the world. When I was a teenager in the 70s, you could only name 10 really good ones. Today there are so many that I cannot name them all.

    Bizet's Carmen reminiscent of tender hearted mazurka, evocative romantic instrumental ballad, violin virtuoso emotionally invested and connected to the song repertoire. Carmen the opera and film with Dorothy Dandrige and Harry Belafonte a classic.

    Romantic Composers evoke yearning, the quotient of love in all it's guises, wistfulness and the embodiment of yearning. I have Puccini Madame Butterfly full opera recording and love the music arrangements for Bizet's Carmen, the lady of the Camelias, the art of letter writing as courtship, antique hapsichord evokes romantic period films

      I think his tone and technique do make me think of the finest of an older Russian way of playing... somewhere between David Oistrakh and Leonid Kogan in this piece while sounding quite individual, but, Kogan was already gone before Antal Zalai was two years old.

    this piece (whether original or Kogan edition here) has so many awkward and unviolinistic passages. i think we hear it frequently at violin competitions because it has so much technical difficulty, compared to the Sarasate, but i just find it uncomfortable to (try to) play. what do you expect from a movie composer? they don't know the violin. kind of the same thing with the Rozsa and Korngold concertos.

    • @sneddley
      @sneddley 4 роки тому +1

      How does it compare to the version Isaac Stern played for the movie soundtrack of "Humoresque"? Do you think any of the difficulties are related to the fact that Heifetz had been the originally intended soloist?

    • @cornel999
      @cornel999 4 роки тому

      @@sneddley wasn't familiar with Humoresque, just listened to it - it was all standard violin repertoire, not written by a movie composer. but yeah, the Waxmen, Rosza, Gruenberg pieces were written for Heifetz by Hollywood composers, since he lived there and wanted to promote American-written music. i don't know, but just guessing that Heifetz did not work with these composers the way that Joachim worked with Brahms, showing them what is and is not possible on the violin, because their stuff is insanely difficult and unviolinistic. not just solo violin works, but their original orchestra movie music.
