Hello, my British farming friends. Always good to see you’ve posted a new video!
It may sound crazy, but haying was always my favorite chore on our family farm and on my wife’s family farm when I was a young man. I loved the hot weather, the labor and the interaction with friends, neighbors and family when we baled and picked up the hay. Mum would make lunch and iced tea for us and come out to the fields so we could eat fast and keep going. Always had dinner or supper under a great big oak tree. You would always see dad or my father in law with their heads cocked and an eye on the weather!
We square baled and dropped the bales on the ground. Our old tractors were never big enough to tow a baler, run a kicker and pull a wagon behind them. We worked in teams with one picking up and transporting hay to the barn, while the other team was unloading their wagon into the haymow. Then we switched up for the next wagon load of hay.
Hot, dusty, scratchy work to put up hay. Folks used to drive by the farm, honk their horns and wave. We always tried to wave them into the field to help.....never worked. They were off to a picnic or to go swimming and we were stuck working all day.
It was good honest work and I never regretted a minute spent cutting with our sickle bar mower, raking, baking, picking or stacking.
Our current farm is a grain operation now. Just corn and beans. No animals and no hay. It’s easier to manage as we age and we have fewer machines to tend and maintain. We contract out a lot of the work on shares. It’s solitary work these days. But, in spite of all the hard work we did in the past, I do still miss the old days of real family farming.
    Cheers!
    Whipple

A beautiful job of making a video and haymaking. I love the English countryside and I miss being able to visit there. I can almost smell the aroma of fresh cut hay from here. I can't wait for the follow-up. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing. I like the way this man is giving the mower time do its job. Here in Holland most of the time everybody is in a rush and therefore the result is crap.

Barley field next to my cottage cut the other day - loads of dust on the breeze but, importantly, 14 kites scavenging above. A wonderful sight! Thanks for yet another splendid vlog Flank and, of course, mum!
Looking forward to see the bailing!!
