Wow, at 2:35 that is the best definition of religious belief I've heard yet. I'm going to have to write that one down. "You have a belief system that is dependent upon faith. Faith is an assertion of absolute conviction, that is assumed independent of evidence and must be defended against all evidence to it's contrary." Profound
Not me, I was a devoted Child of God for over seven years after I had finished 2 years of intense study of the Bible(at least, as intense as possible without learning the original languages and limping along with only the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible with Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.). Even learning the truth about the Bible didn't shake my faith in God; I continued to believe in God for another 13 years, though my mental conception of Her changed over the years. I had had a personal experience with the Divine and nobody could convince me otherwise, until I learned what evidence is, and Occam's Razor. Before I could rationalize it away, my faith was gone, _poof_, like a puff of smoke. That was the spring of 2013. The only way I can ever believe again is with *evidence*.
I love how these guys are really careful with their use of language because they know that one of the ways that religious people try to attack atheists is through their use of language. Words like faith, belief and generalist statements are avoided and clarified when used. I find it quite entertaining to watch.
Poor kid. He's a bit slow and so passionate about his belief. It is so kind of these guys to patiently take time to try to explain their position to him.
it seems religion acts as a deterrant to logical thinking. The more religious you are the harder it seems you grasp simple arguments. It's because that's how the religious are trained. They are told believe in god it's only logical, and also told don't question god with your logic you are not worthy.

@Drathora YES! I've said the same thing many times about many people, including Matt D. Some of the people they're talking to just don't understand them. There were times when I wished I could tell Matt to just dumb it down a bit so the caller could grasp what he's saying.
The definition of "God of the Bible" is "The god described in the bible" which I am talking about. But if it's just "God", then you are completely right.

Questions in order: 1- I have no particular wish to challenge a person's belief in God (the reason I said "if") However if I was told that "My God exists" I would ask how they knew that. 2- I would want to see evidence as it would be an expansion of my own knowledge, this is why I would ask "why" in any situation. 3- I am not sure I understand this question, can you expand on this? Did you mean what are my reasons for wanting evidence? 4- again this would be an expansion of my knowledge.
Because I don't accept something without proof, no matter how many people say so. Ten people can tell me that a train is coming down a street with no tracks. If I can't see or hear one, then I can't believe there is one. I can't say to myself "It's possible there is one."
Matt's co-host is Aron Ra. He is an eminent counter apologist. Big UA-cam skeptic. Has run for Texas Senate (or something). Ran, I think, against Kinky Friedman (author and musician), but I may be wrong about that. But yes, well spoken. And has become semi-prominent partially as a result of that.
Got the ACA mug, and brought it with me to class at university. I'm scandinavian, mind you. This guy who had actually been living in texas for a while came up to me and said "Its a joke, right? That mug? Surely here cant be such thing as an atheist society in Austin Texas, heartland of christian fundamentalism? Who'd make a jug like that, is it some type of satiric tourist bling, like a funny T-shirt?". "Never mind the Holy Lance, Pick of Destiny", I thought "I gots me the ACA Mug of Irony"
"Yet that still is not proof of a nonexistence." No it doesn't, nor did I say it would. What I said was we currently have no evidence that an immaterial sentient mind is even possible, let alone probably, so we have no basis to claim one actually exists. The rational position is to not believe that which we have no justifiable reason to believe.
As a former agnostic I needed evidence that was throughly convincing. I have based my belief on theology, probability mathemmatics, biology, cosmology, archeology , non- biblical historical writings and many more. Please read my next comment on just one example.
My previous comments against this assertion were on one of the other "atheist experience" videos. Unfortunately, they were disliked by the voters-deleted. I'll reiterate the reasons why the entity must be timeless, space-less, immaterial, and personal, as I discuss the causal principle, later today. There is a clear progression to the idea of a personal creator on Kalam. Other theistic arguments are necessary to reach the conclusion that the Christian God...
You can just hear the caller's eyes glazing over at 6:00, as Aron carefully makes an argument that sails majestically over the poor idiot's head like the Goodyear blimp.
When speaking to a christian it's best to use the most common one syllable words and define your terms repeatedly. Use pictures to illustrate points whenever possible. And don't ask too much of them after a few minutes let them go take a nap and perhaps have a juice box.
It seems to me that stefan doesn't quite comprehend the statements and answers of these two gentlemen. He can't even tell the difference between their questions and their answers.
Atheist: *presents a yes or no question Christian: "well actually the reason why im thining that the way-" Atheist: "That doesn't answer my question" Christian: "Well because you didn't answer my question first!" So childish
@mrworms3d I didn't use the word 'fake' or 'lies'. I just asked for proof, which you evidently cannot supply, because there isn't any, otherwise you would tell me.
And a retreat into aggression when you can't actually defend your position. "Oh shit, I've said something stupid, better go ahead and try and insult the guy I'm arguing with and hope nobody notices!"
@MrJoaquin1978 "Abiogenesis is the study of how biological life arises from inorganic matter through natural processes, and the method by which life on Earth arose. Most amino acids, often called "the building blocks of life", can form via natural chemical reactions unrelated to life, as demonstrated in the Miller-Urey experiment and similar experiments that involved simulating some of the hypothetical conditions of the early Earth in a laboratory."
When you see a painting on the wall. Have you ever seen the artist who painted it? Just because you have not seen the artist doesn't mean he does not exist. The very existence of the painting is proof of the existence of its painter. In the very same way the very existence of creation is proof of the existence of its Creator. God Bless ya all I am glad that I love God and even more ecstatic that no matter what darkness throws, in Him I have All Comfort, Love and Understanding. 6thSense.
The reason I gave was that the person could have absolutely no problem with said drug, and still say no, merely for the fact that they did not feel like it at that moment in time.
I wonder how religious people rationalize atheists like me who have always been atheist. It wasn't even that my mom kept religion from me, much the opposite; she exposed me to as many religions as she could, she just never made any claims about any of them being true (or false, for that matter). Just that "this is what people of this religion believe, this is what people of that religion believe and this is what science has proved about how the universe works and how it proves it".
I will try and help you perceive your lack of understanding, burden of proof, or reasons for non belief (if you must). Two statements. 1)Bob says "There are fairies riding pink unicorns in my garden." 2)John says "I don't believe there are pink fairies riding unicorns in your garden." Who must provide evidence (reasons if you must), Bob , or John ? In advance if you can't reason this out we won't be discussing this any further.
where is the second half? the annotations are busted (I can't get them to work for the life of me) and I can't find a single link to what I can guess is the second half of this conversation

How hard is it to see the circular argument here?

2- I would want to see evidence as it would be an expansion of my own knowledge, this is why I would ask "why" in any situation.
3- I am not sure I understand this question, can you expand on this? Did you mean what are my reasons for wanting evidence?
4- again this would be an expansion of my knowledge.
Because I don't accept something without proof, no matter how many people say so. Ten people can tell me that a train is coming down a street with no tracks. If I can't see or hear one, then I can't believe there is one. I can't say to myself "It's possible there is one."
Matt’s cohost is well spoken
"Never mind the Holy Lance, Pick of Destiny", I thought "I gots me the ACA Mug of Irony"
great upload
This is the most unfair matchup imaginable. No wonder the caller got vaporized.
Sorry to disappoint Aron Ra, even in 2021, 11 years later, the arguments havent improved much...
"Yet that still is not proof of a nonexistence."
No it doesn't, nor did I say it would.
What I said was we currently have no evidence that an immaterial sentient mind is even possible, let alone probably, so we have no basis to claim one actually exists. The rational position is to not believe that which we have no justifiable reason to believe.
Wow, I have seen anyone with a good arguement!! lol You guys ROCK.. love it
Great minds at work.
As a former agnostic I needed evidence that was throughly convincing. I have based my belief on theology, probability mathemmatics, biology, cosmology, archeology , non- biblical historical writings and many more.
Please read my next comment on just one example.
AronRa is fantastic!
I'm late to this one, but I would offer the definition of faith is simply a suspension of disbelief
My TV fell over, all the hairs on the left of the screen.
6:55....WOW that was a stunning subject-changequake, even for a Christian!
It seems to me that stefan doesn't quite comprehend the statements and answers of these two gentlemen. He can't even tell the difference between their questions and their answers.
Atheist: *presents a yes or no question
Christian: "well actually the reason why im thining that the way-"
Atheist: "That doesn't answer my question"
Christian: "Well because you didn't answer my question first!"
So childish
@mrworms3d I didn't use the word 'fake' or 'lies'. I just asked for proof, which you evidently cannot supply, because there isn't any, otherwise you would tell me.
And a retreat into aggression when you can't actually defend your position.
"Oh shit, I've said something stupid, better go ahead and try and insult the guy I'm arguing with and hope nobody notices!"
STEFAN NEVER GETS IT. HE NEVER EVER GETS IT
@MrJoaquin1978 "Abiogenesis is the study of how biological life arises from inorganic matter through natural processes, and the method by which life on Earth arose.
Does Aron ever debate? I think I'd like to see that.
"Because there's no credible evidence that any of the thousands of gods humans have believed in actually exist."
I will try and help you perceive your lack of understanding, burden of proof, or reasons for non belief (if you must).
Two statements. 1)Bob says "There are fairies riding pink unicorns in my garden."
2)John says "I don't believe there are pink fairies riding unicorns in your garden."
Who must provide evidence (reasons if you must), Bob , or John ?
In advance if you can't reason this out we won't be discussing this any further.
where is the second half? the annotations are busted (I can't get them to work for the life of me) and I can't find a single link to what I can guess is the second half of this conversation
@Fortune2point0 I could heavily argue the semantics here, but i completely agree with the argument you are making - disbelief is the default position.
What is your evidence for not accepting the tooth fairy, unicorns, the loch ness monster or bigfoot?
The hosts are playing chess and the caller is playing tic-tac-toe
