When we paid off our debt - we had $124,800.47 and it took us 39 months - we definitely didn’t feel a huge relief. It was more of a gradual thing during the whole process. But I was thrilled to meet that goal. We’re going to finish our emergency fund this month, after being this close two other times but we had to use the emergency fund we’d built to keep ourselves from going back into debt. I’m anticipating that I’ll feel glad to have our goal amount so we can move on to baby steps 4 and 5, but as to relief, I’m not sure. That being said, having used the EF while we’ve been trying to build it up, has truly shown me how important having these funds are for an actual life change.
i love that you shared this- this is the reality….i think also, there isn’t a wave of “relief” because this is life now…it’s not like the discipline can end, or the tracking or the new way of doing your finances….this is just the way now. and that’s good.
The happiness vs joy conversation was just what I needed to hear today. I've been working so hard for the last 2 years. Finally paid off my debt and have saved $9,000 out of my $15,000 emergency fund. Today my car started having some major issues, and I felt so disheartened. But there is still joy in this journey because of how far I've come ❤

Way to go with paying off your debt! Very impressive the time it took. Obviously you both were very focused. Good conversation about your reasoning behind next step of building your 6 month emergency fund. I recently finished saving one month of bills. It was nice knowing it was there especially when my husband recently hurt himself on the job. Before I would have been so stressed out but knowing those funds were there if his paycheck was smaller or not even coming in allowed me to not be stressed. Congrats again!

Congrats 🎉 We try to buy everything we lacked growing up for our own children. My hubby grew up without his dad and I grew up without my mom so we tried to give our babies everything but ended up growing in debt (being young and dumb). We recently got rid of our 600 dollar car loan and only need one to pay off one loan. We were a two household income until it got too expensive to pay a babysitter. It's all trial and error. We have come a long way. Your channel has given us the motivation to stick to our budget. Can't wait to be debt free like you guys 😊 Once again Congratulations 🎉

I feel like rather than relief, there's contentment and satisfaction in becoming financially free/stable. I still have a ways to go (debt free by 33!), but I'm getting there. After knocking out my last credit card debt earlier this year, I felt weird that I wasn't more relieved. When I thought about it, I realized I felt *satisfied* more than anything else. And Vada, you're so right about instant gratification. That's how a lot of my debt racked up. I feel like the payoff has been an exercise in delayed gratification, so maybe that's why I feel more content than anything else!

Congratulations! You guys are an inspiration for sure! I think you will be surprised how you actually feel the excitement of this pay off more in the coming months than you do this minute. We (like you) had changed our whole outlook on spending so paying off didn't mean this big shopping spree was in our future. I think maybe that tones down the initial excitement. But in the next months and years when you are able to keep all that money and invest and spend as you want you will be sooooooo excited. And all that is only because of the work you did over the last 1.5 years. I am looking forward to all you guys get to do now with all this freedom!

We also bought a house last year - we kept the price within our budget that we would be able to pay. The loan originator people kept telling us we could “afford” more. Turns out they actually make a commission based on the loan amount so we just would say ok but kept looking in the budget we knew we could comfortably afford. I don’t think a lot of people know the loan originators work on commission so they just go with what they say they qualify for.
Also - congratulations! Being debt free is a totally amazing way to live life a little free-er. You don’t realize how heavy the burden is until it’s completely gone.

Congratulations! I’m close to having my debt paid off. Goal is pay off by September 2024 (stretch goal August). It will be a long 2yr 9mo schedule when that happens paying off $67K. 😱 I will immediately be going on a trip to Italy for a good celebration. It’s amazing how much money you actually have when it’s managed.
