    I found this very interesting, and I certainly learned a few things that I hadn’t thought of previously. My first serious interaction with an HGV driver, and my first example of how much thought they (at least the majority) give to looking after other road users, goes back a little under 40 years. I was on my way back from a University interview, riding a (very) light motorcycle. I was coming along a two lane dual carriageway at full throttle, which meant that I had just about been able to overtake an HGV due to the hill being in my favour compared to his limiter. All of a sudden my engine decided to seize solid. After a second or two of the back wheel just sliding along the tarmac I realised that I needed to keep my foot on the gear shifter (the bike I was riding had a centrifugal clutch combined with a clutch in the shift mechanism, so that was the only way I could coast). Once I had got things under control, and was rolling towards the hard shoulder, I had time to look in my mirrors. There was the HGV I had just passed, straddling the centre line and blocking anyone from coming up on me too quickly. He stayed in the straddle position and kept his speed even with mine until I had made it all the way to the left, then came back into lane 1 and accelerated away. I can honestly say that he probably saved my life doing what he did. I just wish he had stopped so I could thank him.

    I'm finding these HGV videos very informative Ashley. Having passed my car test many years ago, I am licensed to tow a caravan but have only recently started doing so. Whilst it's not the same thing, there are some similarities and these videos are confirming some of my thoughts and giving me other tips to help as I get more accustomed to it

    Very soon im going to be learning to drives coaches for my Class D license. Just got my provisional back so im very excited. These videos provide a wealth of knowledge, such as road spacing and specific attention to details regarding the length of the vechicle. Really enjoying this series and looking forward to seeing more! Thanks for the great content Ashley and have a good christmas!

    When I was learning to drive 4 years ago, my driving instructor told me that he thought I'd make an amazing bus or lorry driver after a good few years of driving experience.
    Now, what with my medical conditions (although I'm technically medically fit to operate large vehicles), I'd rather not. I would find the responsibility of driving such a big vehicle too much I think.
    You're doing amazing though Ashley, keep up the good work

    Well, you live and learn. 23 years into my career and I’ve been taught about using the white lines to judge distances. I’ll be passing that on to the young lad at work who’s doing his test next year.

    As ever Ashley, excellent advice and really decisive driving, can’t fault you’re observations and awareness, I may have mentioned before, I did 23 years on class 2 at 32 tonnes, mainly in Big Hook skip loaders, the main thing you learn is observation, and anticipation, always looking well ahead, and thinking what if, I’m glad to say I came away from my driving career with an unblemished record, i prided myself on being a considerate driver, which….also leads to being a mechanically sympathetic driver, my first truck did 900thousand km , on 2 brake re-lines, and 1 clutch……👍💪🇮🇲

      @ManxAndy 2 роки тому

      @Lancashirelad good going that…..I’ve never put a clutch in a single car I’ve owned, I don’t slip it or ride the pedal….and only one of the many I’ve had over 35 years was an automatic, having mechanical sympathy comes from doing rallying , autocross, and motorcycle racing, as well as the HGV driving 👍🇮🇲💪

    When I did my C+E stright from a car license in 1992, we had a thing called a gear stick and a clutch pedal. It was a Volvo FL 7 with a car like 4 speed box. We had to go down through the gears whilst going down a hill, and back up again. The gap between 1st and 2nd was huge so you had to really slow it down and rev hell out of it to get it in.

    Merry Christmas and thanks for all of your phenomenal driving videos this year 🎄🍾🎉🤶. It’d be almost insulting to say they are of mainstream media quality, because in many ways they are superior 😊. Happy Christmas to all the community too 🥳. Let’s hope that 2022 (or, perhaps, more realistically, Spring 2022 onwards) offers a great time for everyone 👍.

    Three questions for you, Ashley:
    1. Is the vehicle you're driving classed as an automatic or manual gearbox?
    2. Which mirror would you tend you check first?
    3. Being an ADI, would you have to wait the obligatory three years before giving instruction?

      I can help Ashley this this question a bit. Question 1: I used to be a Volvo HGV technician, the gearbox in that truck is an automated manual, but classed as just an auto. Question 2 all of them, when I was doing my training my instructor said if your neck isn’t aching your not checking your mirrors enough. As for 3 I’ve no idea hopefully Ashley can help you on that

    One thing worth noting for anyone young and planning to drive Class 1/2, you're not likely to get a job in a lot of places given a companies insurance provider may not allow under 25s (if i recall) to be on their insurance. I think some also require a set amount of years minimum experience. Doesn't necessarily mean every firm will have such requirements however.

    Hi Ashley, first of all a very merry Christmas to you and yours and hopefully a better New Year. At the beginning of the clip you are coming off a 3 lane Motorway and using the 3rd lane before the Motorway ends (1/2 Mile) As LGV's are not allowed in the 3rd lane does the signage (Indicating the right lane for a specific destination) negate this rule. As an ex . truck driver it's fascinating watching these clips. Cheers Mike

    • @kenbrown2808

      don't know about there, but here, with stronger power steering, crossing hands when you need to turn rapidly is considered a reasonable convenience. much less chance of a runaway steering wheel, which was what push-pull is to avoid.

    On "Cruise Resume uses more fuel": if you're significantly below the set speed, hitting "resume" basically just floors the throttle until you approach the set speed. You might be able to use a bit less fuel if you're more gentle on the throttle, but if you would have just floored it anyway, I don't think there's any difference.
    On the tight left-hand turn, I would have straddled the lanes on approach to avoid ending up boxed-in at the turn where you can't turn because of the risk of the tail-swing. If you do get stuck in that situation, then it can be very difficult because your rear end swings into the path of overtaking traffic that you can't see because it's in the blind spot behind you. Luckily the oncoming bus cleared the area of potentially-conflicting vehicles just at the right time, but you can have problems where other drivers will basically fill up any and all "free" space around you, leaving you unable to turn. Occasionally you have to be a bit assertive (e.g. blocking under/overtaking) to protect other people from themselves :)

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 2 роки тому

      unless UK cruise is different to US cruise, it never floors the throttle, and particularly with something heavy, sometimes flooring for a couple seconds to get the speed up to a shift point saves fuel over taking longer to get up a gear.

    • @misterflibble9799
      @misterflibble9799 2 роки тому +1

      @@kenbrown2808 On the heavies I drive, there's no appreciable difference between "resume" on cruise and flooring the throttle. For example - cruising at 56 mph on a dual carriageway, slow down to 20 mph to negotiate a roundabout and then hit "resume" on the exit. It doesn't accelerate away any faster if I then also floor the throttle.

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 2 роки тому

      @@misterflibble9799 UK cruise controls must be more aggressive than US cruise controls, then. everything I've driven with a cruise control has always had a little more throttle available than the cruise control used.

    Hi Ashley,
    Just a quick question as you more than likely know much more than me.
    Let’s say for example your at a junction in an articulated lorry, there is 2 lanes -
    Lane 1 - Turn left only
    Lane 2 - Straight ahead and turn right only.
    There is also 2 phases of lights, filter light to turn left that comes on when the lights to go straight ahead and turn right are still on RED.
    For an articulated lorry to make the tight turn you need to straddle both of the lanes, position yourself in the middle / more over to the right hand side.
    What do you do in that position, technically you’re turning left for which the light is green, however because of the space you need you’re also technically going against the red light that’s meant for the straight ahead and turn right lane?
    There is plenty of junctions like that in central london with red light cameras on them and I wonder would you still get a ticket for that if the camera does snap you? If so would saying that you was turning left for which the light was GREEN, and required all the space you need to make the left turn be a sufficient defence?
    Technically you have done nothing wrong because the filter light to turn left was green, however you have set the camera off because it was still active for the lights that are straight ahead, you get the point.
    I would appreciate your input on this.
    Thanks.

      @@deano6017 Even before the recent changes, LGV learners were able to use motorways. After all, to be able to get a provisional LGV licence, you first have to have a full car licence, and will hopefully have at least some experience driving cars on motorways.
      I'm not sure what the situation was before the staging requirements came in - a long time ago, you used to be able to go straight to "Class 1 HGV" (equivalent to current C+E) without passing any lower tests, and you would automatically get a car licence at the same time. Back then, it might have been the case that learner HGVs were banned from motorways, since they could be "absolute beginners".

      The road leads to a narrow swing bridge over the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Hence the very low weight limit.
      Weight limits that low are not very common in the UK, and they're almost always due to a particularly weak historic bridge or similar structure. I know of one other on the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.
