Ambient-house pioneer and master remixer William Orbit (real name William Wainwright) began his musical career in the early-'80s band Torch Song. When the group broke up, he remained in the studio to learn the ropes and began to provide remixes for artists, including Madonna, Prince, the Human League, Erasure and Belinda Carlisle. Orbit concurrently recorded his own material under the name Strange Cargo and released three albums during the late '80s and early '90s. He occasionally records as Bass-O-Matic and founded Guerilla and O Records. During 1997, he worked with Madonna as the main producer for her electronica-oriented LP Ray of Light. It won Grammy awards for Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording. Ray of Light's success led to a host of remixing and production work, including Blur's 1999 album 13.

"Adagio for strings" == name of the music by Barber
William Orbit == Author of album "Pieces in moder style", where this music that was electronic performance (string instruments) of barber's original, is the 1st track.
Ferry Crosten == Author of this Trance "mix" that uses the version made by william orbit
i'd never bet this is a Corsten's remix, however converting a classical song to synth it's not easy, good work

What release? The first one is from 2005 and I think even the promo was played at 2005 the first time. Maybe I am wrong in that, but anyway the Tiësto's version was released some years later than the others.
By the way, ATB have their own remix also. Released in 1999.

this is fery corsten 1999 version of the amazing .barbers adagio. its 4 years older than tiesto's good attempt but ferrys never tiers unlike tiesto's which is doomed to woolworth classic compilation c.d standred. he should never of done it and taken it away from ferry.when i hered tiesto play his in 2003 amnesia it sounded amazing,not now and is associated with chavs bouncing around in a big domes. my mum n dad even like ferrys!!!

Perhaps a timeline of "Adagio For Strings" might help people:
1936 - Samuel Barber - Original composition
2000 - William Orbit's interpretation - from his album "Pieces In A Modern Style"
2000 - Ferry Corsten - A remix of William Orbit's interpretation
2004 (chart 2005) - Tiesto - A remix of Ferry's remix.
I prefer the Ferry Corsten, I'll leave you all to argue over which version you think is best.
Adagio for Strings lore
Tiesto remix is designed to appeal to mass market and make as much money as possible by appealing to a wider audience as possible. In doing so, he has to incorporate various elements that take away from the tune melody of this song, which is not what ferry's remix does. Ferry remains true to the intent and emotion of the original classic. Ferry's will be better than tiestos for this reason, but I would not be surprised if Tiestos version was more commercially successful than ferry's version.
I don't even listen to trance, but this, this gives me hope in this small vile world.

I'd love to take this record back in time to Samuel Barber in 1936 just after he first created it, and play it to him, and watch his face. Either that or teleport him from 1936 to a nightclub in the year 2000 with the crowd, lighting and huge sound system.
Given that electronic dance music hadn't been invented for a further 50 or so years after he first created the song, let alone hear it at over 100 decibels, I wonder what his reaction would've been.

If you want hard Tech Trance sound to pump up the dance floor then the Tiesto version is the way to go, if you want to just flow in a trance then this is the version, either way, they are both the best Adaigo for Strings remixes out there.

Just learned that one of my favorite pieces of classical music was also popular in the trance, etc, world. After listening to Tiesto's arrangement, I was not expecting much from any of them - that arrangement kind of ruined it. This arrangement, on the other hand, did not. While I do still prefer the original (I say as someone who could name probably a dozen songs off the top of my head that were good, but made better by a cover), if this came on the radio, I wouldn't change the channel. Screw Tiesto.

When I first heard this was happening many many years ago I though no, wont work. This shouldn't work. One the greatest, most melancholic classical tracks ever written turned in to a dancefloor monster? My god it does though. Still an absolute banger in 2022. Amazing job by Ferry Corsten.

I have to completely agree with you there... This remix is very 'emotional' and trance based, compared to Tiesto's progressive monster... which I grew to like. Corstens remix takes you on a journey, very melodic and beautiful... this is one of the remixes that made him into the world-renowned producer/remixer he is today!

Passion of the Christ music is absolutely heart-wrenching. I cannot even watch that movie again, but will forever keep it on my shelves. Adagio for strings wouldn't have done Christ justice. not sad enough even for His punishment. So many versions of this song out. so many different scenes of sadness and hate connected with all of these videos. Maybe I would love to see one that depicts the triumph of the human soul and spirit, as the forces of evil and chaos are swept aside.

@bobjfs Well, I have listened both version and what can I say is that they are awersome but in different way. In this is exalted the epicity and dramatic power, in the particular trance style. How? With strong supersaw arpeggio and with the repetitive beat hypnotizing and catching you in the emotion of the melody. So the feelings are emotional, intense, cosmic! There is plesaure in being sad and uplifted at the same time. These are the feelings! You can't comprehende? So at least be respectful.

Trasforming an old classical composition in modern trance music without any cacophony and adding an absolute electronic epicity is absolute art. A Masterpiece of a track that can be said across any genre of music. Great passion and emotion from a track that has no words, the original is a classic but this mix takes it onto a whole new level. It's trance but in 100 years this could be the futures classical music.
@HCMusicAlliance Mainstream? OMG! It's because Tiesto is the most famous dj in the world it's inevitable that all of his tracks become popular. But not that the remix is cheesy... Ferry's is more mainstream beacause it's slower and it doesn't have such heavy sounds as Tiesto's. I think we sould make a poll! ;)
I like both, hey even the ATB remix but this has Ferry Corsten written all over it - the basslines, arpeggios and wailing pads.

Tiesto's remix was good but Corsten's remix was the dogs bollocks when it got played in the clubs around its release, nuff said!

yes it does... and I can truely say from nu-school I hope someday they can fuse oldschool with the nu-school. because they are both mind shattering. This genre w as made for peace not war, and even not between its own genre. Its sad that what was created for people to come together has become something that has divided the people into old and new. But what can we expect it happens with all genres of music.
