UPDATED COMMENT since I watched your video all the way through. We use these in the dental office to make whitening trays and mouth guards and you can get different gauges of material that will produce more detail. Mold release can be really helpful, also when the plastic is heated, depending on the brand it will let off gasses that may be inhibiting the cure of the resin, which may mean that you will need to wash the mold after it cools with soap and water, and then dry the mold as you know water and resin do not mix lol. ALSO check out The Crafsman as HE JUST posted a video a few days ago about a different brand of vacuum former that has a much larger surface area, he addressed a lot of troubleshooting issues, with creasing and detail capture. Go check it out and you may be able to find his machine that he uses. I believe the machine he was uses has different gauges of plastic that are thicker or thinner depending on your needs. Also, letting it sag more or less with allow it to be thinner or thicker that may help with detail. I always let mine sag quite a bit for whitening trays as it captures a lot more anatomy detail and fits better. That combined with mold release will allow you to reuse the molds. I HOPE THAT HELPS!!

That looks like chocolate mold plastic. Resin molds take a different plastic. It’s more milky white not clear. You can order the right plastic sheets though. I have a ton of those type of molds. The chocolate molds always break though cause they aren’t compatible with resin.

I’ve never had a good experience with that kind of material and resin. The resin’s heat melt it changing the shape of the piece, in my experience.
I guess a 3D printer and silicone would be the best choice for making moldes. You can design whatever it’s in your imagination and bring them to life 😀 and make awesome pieces! Have a great week! 🙋🏻‍♂️

I have been attempting resin & crafting for almost ten months now... FAR AWAY FROM your talent... although getting down the basics... I REALLY wanted this machine when it first came out, unfortunately I couldn’t afford it. Right after Christmas I had taken my gift from my dad ( which was my 48th bday 12/24 & Christmas money) ran & purchased this because it was on sale and then to Home Depot to grab a baby shop vac. (since I have a cordless and just didn’t think it would work ) In the parking lot I was googling something to do with this thing and YOUR VIDEO came on... not sure how I EVER MISSED IT in your list... I figured I’ll watch it when I get home... well being so compulsive and wanting immediate gratification I just went for it and my first five or six pieces that night consisted of some shells and a crystal... then...WELL...POURED MY RESIN.... I WISH I HAD WATCHED YOUR VIDEO FIRST!!!! YOU ARE SO EXTREMELY PATIENT AND WELL MANNERED ( video or no video... I consider myself professional when I have to be) I would have been the artsyMADwoman!!! Those creases don’t come out or lessen with a heat gun AT ALL! Back in the box...for SALE possibly for someone else not for ME... didn’t take rocket science... I definitely a beginner to crafting and with resin... after a dozen tumblers, some cutting boards & jewelry I am not looking to have a trash can full of plastic nor can I afford to waste a drip of resin less alone the additional disappointment of my failing project that’s actually NOT ME lol! Anyway... you are a very TALENTED, amazing, beautiful teacher/ plethora of information and envy you & how nice & polite you kept yourself!!! I thank you for being you and all of your generosity with your education and knowledge!!!

its nice they finally made a desktop version of a vacuum former,- not just because of it's ease of use, but also because of how much more accessible it will be. kind of an easy-bake version, but enough to get the concept and figure out if you'd like to learn the skill and get/make a full, formal one =)

Hi! I work in the theater industry as a Props designer/prop master type... and we use vacuforms for maaaaannnny things... to make statues for instance so we can make them out of lighter less breakable material......to make duplicate vases that won’t break... you could vacuum form an iron radiator and then make them out of a really light material for the set so you don’t have to have heavy iron radiators on your set...stuff like that...we use them to make moldings & reliefs for set pieces for furniture pieces etc. etc. etc. etc.... it is quite an amazing tool. I didn’t know that this little one exists pretty cool and I’m sure it could be useful for something maybe not resin but something... 👍👍👍

There’s a product called mold release. It’s just a spray or a waxy rub on stuff, and that’s what is used to make the vacuum formed molds reusable. Smooth-On makes some. It’s also commonly used when making river tables to keep it from adhering to the large molds, which I think are usually melamine? Anywho, I don’t know how long they would last since they’re thin, but mold release should get you more than one use out of them.

I am so thankful for this video. This mold maker is by We R Memory Keepers and I guess, sold exclusively in Michael's. It is the same company that created Spin-it Tumbler Cup Turner. It is an innovative company but most of the time has products too good to be true and fail most of the people who use them. The best of their inventions was the Crop-a-dile paper hole puncher for papercrafting. However, overwhelming complaints about many of their products lead consumers of their goods to give them the side eye and wait for reviews like yours before purchase. After the Spin-it fiasco, that did it for me.
I saw a video of this mold maker as they presented at Creativation 2020 and thought it was too cumbersome and would probably be a failure and definitely not for resin use. When we think molds and you say that it is good for resin, then it should work. Mold release wouldn't make a difference.
So return that thing, give it a 1 in reviews and get ur money back.
Once again, sorry you went thru all of this work for us. But I am so freakin grateful. Love you.

i got a toy version of one these when i was a kid! it was so much fun. i would wait until the square heated up and then flip it over and push a knob in front at a diangle that sucked the air out and the plastic would formed over the object we had chosen, let it cool and then it was done!

It’s great that you had such enthusiasm about this product, and I was sorry to see your disappointment at the end. In the instructions it says to use mold release with resin. You’re also supposed to use a clay to build out the bottom of the pieces you’re molding to prevent difficulties removing items from the mold (the top edge can’t be wider than the bottom that rests on the vacuum grill. You also melt the plastic to different depths depending on the height of the item being cast. Others have had success cutting a cardboard/mat board/fun foam slightly larger tan the item to make a small platform makes a big difference on smaller objects.

I totally appreciate everytime you experiment with new ideas and products! I can see how fun it would be to use if you needed to make some small projects quickly. I like making silicone molds, but I'm not always patient and many times I just have one free day to play so it may take another week or two before I get to try the mold (and that tends to keep me awake wondering if sleep is worth the wait or if I could just sneak out to my studio for a bit, but sleepy resin projects never turn out just right for me, lol)

Hi! Just a friendly tip! Drop the plastic quickly! You can’t go slowly or it cools too much and forms wrinkles! Fast is the key!

I’ve been wanting one of these! They actually sell the vacuum too at Michael’s! I just can’t afford it.
I’ve seen bigger models of these that are used for like special effects stuff. I saw one used on a show on Sci fi channel

This specific vacuum former looks like it uses a different type of plastic sheet than the what we usually see for plastic resin molds. That could be a really key thing.
This seems better for little soaps or chocolate maybe? It's a small, simple, Michael's beginner level former. I def agree with watching Evan & Katelyn's vacuum press video! I think it's called "making potato gems."

Try using mould release or popping in the freezer before trying to demould if it's stuck xx

Interesting video! Definitely need a different plastic (though it's probably not compatible with this particular vacuum former) I have literally hundreds of plastic molds and they're great, they're definitely a heavier plastic. I do ALWAYS suggest a mold release with any plastic molds or you're gonna have a struggle and your thumbs will be sore demolding lol.

There is a thing that is called liquid mold release so you apply the liquid to the mold and it will make it easier to get the resin item out.

I returned this. The only way to get it to really make a good mold was to use a heat gun on it while the vacuum was still on and if you aren’t perfect with it, it melts holes.
I had no problem with the mold releasing with the powder they sell. But everything I tried made it wrinkle. I even hooked up our strong industrial vacuum to it and while it helped a little, not much.
At the end of the day for the price of the refills, it ultimately is better to just use silicone mold material. You get a perfect mold that’s so easy to use.
I’ve noticed they’re on sale now almost everywhere and when I returned it the woman at Joanns said everyone who has bought one returned it.

Interesting video. I'd have to agree with your assessment, especially about the plastic! Could you do a video on making silicone molds? There's a product by Alumilite that's microwaveable and reuseable. That'd be cool to see if you're allowed to use a product that's not CCDIY.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences on youtube it is so helpful!!! I have been experimenting with resin for years and I have tried so many different resins and silicone mold making kits and lots have not been good experiences and the journey has been expensive. I really appreciate artists that share their knowledge and give honest reviews on products, so that others can make more informed decisions when purchasing products. I recently bought the moldstar 15 to make a mold (I just need to cast my resin and see if it worked). Also, some of your videos are missing, is that content coming back?

There’s a machine just like this called the Mayku FormBox. It’s pretty much the same, but it has different sheets as well as a timer and an automatic switch for the vacuum. So it’s a bit more handy. I believe the forming base might be a little larger too? Mine’s really good, although I don’t use it half as much as I should to be honest. I believe Mayku were the first to do it and they’re also working on some new mould making machines which might be worth keeping an eye on 😁 also keep in mind that the shapes you mould need to fairly specific, you don’t want to form anything that has indents in that’ll keep the piece from getting back out if you get me? Mayku have really good info that comes with theirs. It’s definitely a lot more expensive though. You’re welcome to give me a shout if you’d like to have a look at their booklet :)

I haven't tried the machine but I have found that with WeR Memory Keepers products... I really like them for their paper crafting products, but their machines are not good. I had issues with their cup turner unscrewing itself and dropping my cups. This was my first time experimenting with resin, and I was really bummed, but I bought a new cup turner online, and it works perfectly. I had seen a couple reviews of this machine and I would never buy it, JoAnn's already had it marked down to $65. I don't know about other brands, but if they could produce reusable molds, then I would love to see that (and own one, of course) BTW, I love your channel, you are so much fun to watch, and congrats on the UA-cam plaque. :-)

Hi Heather!! I am SO glad you did this video because I saw one of those machines and wondered how well they work. I have an old machine that is box shaped and has pegboard on the top. I bought it new from a private individual in one of my resin FB groups but have never used it. My fear is that my sweeper won't have enough of a powerful suction! Might have to use a shop-vac lol!! Oh and FYI - Michaels usually doesn't let you use their coupons on the big ticket machines which really stinks!

Dont feel bad about being honest. You were respectful about why you didnt like it. You pointed out some things that other resin artists might not like about it either. And you mentioned reasons why it might work for some people, still. You might've just saved a lot of people money by letting them know how it works and showing the results. You didnt bash anything. I almost bought one when michaels sent me an email about them but i watched the demo video on their site and i didnt like how it seemed to not get crisp lines around things they were molding. It seems to leave wrinkles of plastic on some of the edges and you did mention in this video that it loses definition so i appreciate the honesty. I was on the fence but im pretty sure its not for me now that I've seen it demo'd. Thanks for the fair and thorough review!

It's not a Michael's product, it's a We R Memory Keepers product and I got mine from JoAnn's using a 50% off coupon (hubby got it for me as a birthday gift in August) it's a home version is the vacuum form like the Cricut machines are a home version of Vinyl cutters.
You can buy the sheets cheaper online from companies that sell that type of plastic (I found them for $40 a sheet cut) you'll get about 75 pieces when cut for $40. For resin you'll need a mold release and you I use the mold maker in conjunction with my Cricut to make custom molds.
Loved your video Amy of Amy Jo's Creations.
