  • The Indian Government on September 23 released an advisory asking Indian Nationals and students in Canada to exercise due caution and remain vigilant. This came after a sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities in Canada. Also gangs and criminal organisations within the Punjabi Canadian community have expanded their activities into Indian soil which came into focus with the killing of Sidhu Moose Wala. Another long standing problem is that of the Khalistani groups in Canada. To understand more about India-Canada relationship, how both countries can move forward? Should India escalate this to Prime Ministerial level? Smita Prakash spoke with Indrani Bagchi who is the CEO of Ananta Centre, a think tank based in Delhi. Indrani was the Diplomatic Editor for the Times of India for several years and covered the Ministry of External Affairs as well as interpreted it and analysed global trends with an Indian perspective.

Hi smita I am absolutely loving your podcast. I am part of the Australian diaspora and use to do AIRBNB where I met a lot new migrants to Australia. I started a free service educating people especially young girls & women about the Aussie laws , where is the nearest police station which no to dial in emergency and that really helped and spread like a wild fire where everyone was helping one another. Australia has a better stand on lot of issues which Canada doesn’t.
Thanking you so much please talk more on the diaspora and will be happy to give you inputs.

Hi Smita - please do not call Journalists on your show as guest. With due respect, journalists have absolutely no idea of how real world works. The biggest myth believed in media world is that you become an expert on anything/everything by just observing and gossiping about it. Whereas, in reality nothing beats experience - a person who has even couple of years of experience in actually doing something, gains several times more in-depth understanding about the topic than someone gossiping about it for several decades. THIS IS HARSH FACT & its high time that media persons have humility to accept this. Please don't get me wrong, there is immense value of journalists in our society, but they SMEs of mass communication, not the topics they are reporting about.

As someone been in Australia for donkey years, I would (if I could) put up massive hoardings in Punjab that the west is NOT the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Having said that, I know for a fact that Hindu Mahasabha, Sai Society, Hindu Swayam Sevak, and every Gurudwara I know of are very active in assisting new migrants to Australia. But, how do you help someone who gets off a plane with a chip on his/her shoulder and wants their new country to bend to their whims and fancies... instead of learning about their new country. In any case, this is a BRILLIANT conversation between Smita and Indrani. This podcast can literally go on for days, and still not scratch the surface of this topic!!!

So insightful, Ms Prakash is always extremely graceful and poised in putting forward her POV. Whenever internal politics and vote bank politics are not kept separated from foreign policies the results will always be disturbing and won't foster harmonious relationships.

It was a fantastic podcast. Especially because I am here in Canada and getting insights from Indians.
Anyway, the one thing I thought the podcast mixed up and therefore did not discuss at length was that the attacks on Indians by Khalistanis are different from attack on Indians (including Sikhs) by Canadians. The victims of most racial attacks are Sikhs because they are easily identifiable due to their Turbans and which is covered extensively in media here. Then the next one is the Khalistani attacks on Hindu places of worship or Indians (any non-Sikh) who take out a car rally on Independence day etc.
Because that distinction wasn't made enough, I think the possible solutions were not apt.

THe answer is easy. Canada does not act decisively because it wants a weakend India and if the faultlines are to be exploited to weigh down an upcoming power it will use it.

The problem is that too many senior Indian diplomats and journalists have interests in Canada. In some ways, Russia was given a gift when rich Russians were sanctioned in Western countries. We might have to wait for that.
But before that, you guys seemed to've missed the main reason Jaishankar said what he said: to get the message to the Indian public.
And enough of this crap about "we are not China". That does not address the point.

As someone living in Toronto since some time, it pains me to say but the blind hatred towards BJP by liberals in India and them publishing in Western outlets is what is causing Khalistanis to gain dominance again. You don't hear much of pro India pro BJP news in western outlets so western intellectuals sympathise with them. Also the farmers movement was badly handled by BJP despite such an important reform, that kids and relatives of Punjab farmers globally had more reason to think Hindus conspire against them. r/Sikh is a good place to see and learn how the people think.

it depends on country & it’s capabilities you are dealing with,
I remember 2 or 3 yrs back , Canada interfered in internal matters of Saudi who responded very strongly. Saudi called all of it’s citizens immediately and closed all relations, what was Canadian response? Kneeled down and seek pardon. In case of India , Canada understands that we are third world nation & rather than India Canada can punish/ cause unrest as has been doing ( musa wala Or Kisan aandolan sponsorship).
We are different, we can’t do that and we shouldn’t do ether , they knows that . We want to be good boy , but who in the world are considered good ? India Or Canada??

I am glad that yours is a subjective opinion; that your comment has no pretensions of objectivity. Since caste is the very last thing that would ever occur to us regular people while using the phrase "pure vegetarian", we would gladly continue to use it without the slightest of scruple ailing our conscience.

@@SamvedIyer Mr Iyer, with all due respect, it is not occuring to you because you have not faced caste based discrimination as you belong to the upper caste. The word “pure” clearly signals a kind of moral superiority based on the choice of diet.
