thomas the tank engine was basically just made by some grown man who loved trains but hated new diesel trains, so its only natural that anybody with an interest in trains could enjoy that, and i dont doubt theres other childrens shows out there with more substance than expected
i'm not in the barney fandom but the idea of barney, in an actual episode of the show, becoming a drug addict (well, not really drugs, but you know) is funnier than any edgy subversion the internet has taken with him
It's kind of heartbreaking imagining the children of addicts/alcoholics seeing their own parents in this. I've heard so many stories of young kids trying to hide their parent's drugs.
This feels less like an episode of a Preschool show from PBS Kids and more like a pistachio commercial made by a stoner who watches too many Adult Swim cartoons.
i mean i was but it was when i was five. i remember crying a lot in kindergarten because everyone made fun of barney. 😢 my mom was an alcoholic and we were often homeless, barney was dinosaur dad.
I think this is interesting, because it's one of the very few times Barney has his own problem. It's an interesting idea that Barney's friends give back some lessons he taught them. There's an idea here, but the execution wasn't great
I would wonder what were their Barney discussions if I didn't watched this video, but, nope! Never want to see Barney afain after discovering this monstrosity (not offending the video, offending the episode)
Just wanted to say that I'm not sure how the algorithm led me to this, but I am glad that it did, as a '90s' baby. Guess I'm going to be watching Barney lore videos for the next few hours!
Algorithm: Hey you wanna listen to an impressively in depth analysis of Barney & Friends? Me: Sure, ok. ... wow I had no idea the show got so unhinged. all seriousness, it takes real passion to make something like this a good watch. Good job~!
Still don't think I'll ever watch Barney, but your video has given me infinitely more respect for it. Specifically reading Stephen White's words about how the show had changed, and the way you described the difference between old Barney conflicts and Season 11 conflicts. That's the thing about a lot of shows/games/anything aimed primarily at very young children. It's easy to dismiss these as shallow on the surface, but they often have a lot of heart put into them. Just look at any Humongous Entertainment game. There's a reason grown adults can appreciate them too. Also as someone who's always found the concept of random, out of character aggression hilarious, Pistachio sounds like my kinda episode.
I'm not sure what's more wild to me: that this episode of Barney exists, that it was the result of a disgruntled writer calling his management's BS, or that there is a UA-cam channel that does serious thematic analysis of a show for 2 year olds.
When I first came across this episode, I thought to myself, “how interesting, a dinosaur that’s just like the rest of us!” I just can’t seem to forget that little pistachio soccer kick trick he did at the beginning of the episode! Also Baby Bop saying “I don’t eat anything the same color as me!” is honestly my everyday thought process!
this video is so wild to me because i had no idea this episode existed at all 😭i am not in the barney fandom but i appreciate so much how passionate you are about it, preschool shows don't really get talked about in depth on youtube/social media but i love when people who are fans talk about them in depth because a lot of these shows are made with love and want to entertain and educate young children. barney gets described as "not educational" by detractors but even in this video alone i learned that there was lots of content designed to entertain and educate younger audiences in a way they would be able to understand and so much love and passion went into the show. great work!
UA-cam homepage algorithm is wanting me to enter the Barney fandom, and this video is doing a good job of convincing me… A+ stuff this was a delight lol
Hearing the phrase “cult of pistachio” is something I’d never thought I’d ever hear, especially when paired with the preschool character Barney, another thing is I never knew this episode existed and I was quite frankly better off not knowing of it’s existence if this video did not pop up in my suggestions, and I got curious, but seriously though, LITTLE EINSTEINS, the show about Beethoven and George Bizet, with something little Timmy over here wouldn’t be able to comprehend, is more comprehensible than this episode’s whole addiction thing, p.s, it would’ve been 5 times funnier if this episode was canon

There's also a BARNEY CANON??? AS IN LORE???, and an entire fanbase (well i WAS in the Thomas fanbase wayy back then so maybe i should shut up) what did i watch 😭🙏
I literally just an hour ago watched a video essay on Welcome To The Game II, the most grueling, emotionally-harrowing horror game I've ever heard of. And then the algorithm sends me this. I continue to be gobsmacked that, _absolutely everything_ has lore and depth. Congrats on making me interested in a subject I never would have fathomed being interested in.
I don't know why youtube recommended me this, I have never once clicked on a Barney video, but the thumbnail sold me on this and I'm glad to have watched it. Half of me kinda respects the writers for attempting such a serious topic even if it failed, while the other half is thinking "I ain't stopping Barney. He's offering all the homemade sweets I can eat, let him cook."
I remember that episode. Boy, do I remember it; it put me off of pistachios since I was 6. I never knew it started out as a joke from a writer! My favorite part HAS to be the Little Dinos hiding the pistachio treats around the caboose!
I grew up with the old school seasons of Barney & Friends with Bob West and David Joyner and this episode was my first exposure to the newer seasons. I was beyond confused about how different it was from the show I remembered as a kid
@@BarneyMillennium I also credit the Pistachio episode with getting me into the Barney fandom because I just had to know how the show became so bizarre
Man, as someone who used to watch Barney as a kid, this just sounds like a wild fever dream. And the funniest thing is, had I seen this as a kid, it likely would've helped me prevent myself from eating too much at times.
I work at a store that sells pistachio chocolate (among other things) but some of our customers might as well be Barney since we sell SO much of it lol. I never saw this episode as a kid, I was rarely allowed to watch Barney at all and was already out of the age demographic by 2007, but this sounds very funny and weird.
I’m part of that legion of mid-80s babies that spent roughly 1992-95 drawing Barney dying in a fire or falling into a pit of spikes to prove we were big kids who didn’t like stuff that was for little kids. So this is the most thought I have ever given to an actual episode of the show or the way the episodes were constructed and…I have to say this is pretty wild.
I guess you could say… this episode was _nuts_ Also, I had no idea that Barney even had a sizable adult fandom -and I’m saying this as someone who’s part of the Puppy in My Pocket and Build-A-Bear Honey Girls fandoms-
I just stumbled onto this channel. I watched Barney in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and loved it at the time. (I listened to his Bedtime Songs tape almost every night to get to sleep.) I had no idea a hardcore “Barney” fandom like this existed, though I shouldn’t be surprised. You just got yourself a sub.
Got this in recs and was so intrigued by the concept. Thanks for including a lot of niche info, it’s interesting to learn more behind the scenes stuff even as an outsider
I'm not in the Barney fandom and know nothing about it beyond having watched it as a kid, and I don't remember this episode, so this is absolutely insane to learn about oh my god
I actually got a laugh at pistachios being the chosen food for this episode. Normally when shows targeted at younger audiences do a plot of the character eating too much of a certain food it's a type of sugary food, like ice cream or candy. Yet Barney has a relatively healthy food of pistachios!
Didn’t realize that there was such a decent amount of adults into Barney like this. No condemnation but I’m just wondering why? *says that as I’m one of the biggest Arthur glazers*
Based Arthur enjoyer Hopefully with more adults enjoying childhood shows we can make new content that's actually entertaining and engaging for parents as much as their children.

I used to watch Barney a lot as a little kid in the early to mid 2000s and I have genuinely never heard of this episode. I had no idea the show would even dare to tackle this topic.
*Somewhere In The Future Where Barney Marries Dorothy:* *Little Dino:* Dad, how did Rosie get her name? *Barney:* Because your mother loves roses. *Little Dino:* Then how did I get my name? *Barney:* I'm glad you asked, Pistachio!
This episode was truly bizarre! Barney learning to not eat too many of something makes him kinda come off as a hypocrite, since he tells BJ, Bop and the kids the exact opposite. I agree with the writer not wanting to do conflicts. The whole point of Barney(well, to me) is it’s supposed to be a happy escape from reality. That’s why I prefer seasons 1 to 7. That’s also when I noticed Barney’s voice was annoying, which is probably where all the ‘Barney is annoying’ stuff came from.
Never saw the episode because I stopped watching Barney before riff came on and but I do remember the park and caboose. Seen episodes on UA-cam of Riff. But I remember seeing a DVD ad on tv about him being interdicted onto the show and that was like in 2014 ish but it was very hot button topic around the time
My younger self did recall seeing this particular episode, but never thought that little change of plan on who's gonna eventually learn a lesson would get sub-memes of it's own... Or a whole CULT! Besides, my mom is not of fan of pistachios so I guess she should be lucky not to have pistachio flavored pizza and.... God who knows what other odd pistachio related mixtures the dino had in mind while going through the cookbook, as if having pumpkin spice flavored products for the fall wasn't enough.
Went into this video blind and genuinely thought "Cult of Pistachio" was the name of the episode. Had no idea what I was getting into.

*Somewhere In The Future Where Barney Marries Dorothy:*
*Little Dino:* Dad, how did Rosie get her name?
*Barney:* Because your mother loves roses.
*Little Dino:* Then how did I get my name?
*Barney:* I'm glad you asked, Pistachio!
THIS episode was so prominent to me as a kid lol
This episode was truly bizarre! Barney learning to not eat too many of something makes him kinda come off as a hypocrite, since he tells BJ, Bop and the kids the exact opposite. I agree with the writer not wanting to do conflicts. The whole point of Barney(well, to me) is it’s supposed to be a happy escape from reality. That’s why I prefer seasons 1 to 7. That’s also when I noticed Barney’s voice was annoying, which is probably where all the ‘Barney is annoying’ stuff came from.
I definitely prefer the earlier seasons too💜
Never saw the episode because I stopped watching Barney before riff came on and but I do remember the park and caboose. Seen episodes on UA-cam of Riff. But I remember seeing a DVD ad on tv about him being interdicted onto the show and that was like in 2014 ish but it was very hot button topic around the time
0:57 What is going on between Barney and that lady?!
She’s talking to the actor inside the costume😅
Vore
Why am I here? I don't even like Barney. That said, this was hilariously bizarre and I might give Pistachio a watch.
This video was too short lmao
Amazing
Video analysis of a Barney episode is something I genuinely didn’t know would go so hard 😔✊
Definitely, haha!
I didn't know there was a Barney fandom ngl but I'm fuckin with this heavy
Barney just wanted to earn a snack.
