The “iconic face mask” Hannibal Lector wears in Silence of the Lambs is put on him by the Drs/nurses in the hospital to avoid being bitten by him. It’s not a Kylo Ren type of thing that he likes to wear for the hell of it. That makes no sense!!
The face mask shown in "Rising" is a part of his Japanese aunt's samurai armor, the Menpo, which is a piece that covers from the nose to the chin. I'm guessing they did it as a reference to the facial restraint that Hopkins' Lecter later wears........
If a story can make you sympathise with the the villian, it usually means that its written very well. I love it when you can understand why the villian does what he does with sound motives, instead of opting for the "he is just evil and crazy" that we often get.
I agree for some villains, like Magneto and Jigsaw. However, knowing more about villains like Michael Myers and Hannibal Lector ruins their presence on screen and makes you comfortable with them, instead of being afraid or intimidated by them.
Cole Johnson I think it depends on the genre. In horor, yes a mysterious villian probably means more tension, but in other genre like this can really work wonders. For example in the anime "tokyo ghoul" (I found the overall anime rather mediocre, especially with the 2nd season) the strongest point in the plot was in my oppinion when a bad guy was killed and eventhough he was a crazy person, who enjoyed killing, you felt kinda bad that he died and the funeral and mouring of his co-workers actually seemed genuine.
Not to disregard your example, The Joker from "The Dark Knight" is an example of a non horror movie character who works as mysterious and unknown. But, I guess it just depends on perspective.
but you're supossed to sympathize with his motives, the motives of a serial killer that may be surprisingly actually human and all that stuff.... Therefore the movie didn't fail form other people, therefore the movie being bad is still an oppinion though
He put the mask on the feel powerful in a sense it made him feel stronger in silence I think cuz it proved that everyone was afraid of him and he knew that
So glad to see "Casino Royale" included on this list. It is one of THE BEST films in the series, and did a great job of establishing Bond for the 21st Century. BTW, the reason it was decided to do CR when they did, is that the rights to it, which Fleming sold away in the 60's, had gotten back to EON Productions, the "official" Bond studio. It was the 2nd time that director Martin Campbell (The Mask Of Zorro, Vertical Limit) got to inaugurate a new 007, having also directed Pierce Brosnan in GOLDENEYE.
I agree with the list except for Star Trek, which should have been disqualified for the reason you mention: it's not an origin story, it's an alternative universe.
Hannibal Rising was a great film but would have been much better if it was a stand alone film about someone else. Hannibal Lecter is much more scary and unsettling if we don't know his backstory.
Didn't like it. The expectation built by the previous installments of the franchise were shattered by watching it. The worst part, to me, was how they tried to force a connection between his sudden interest in Japanese culture and history (something that isn't ever mentioned in the other movies) with the thing used in the asylum to keep him from biting people.
asrafel13 It works great as a standalone revenge thriller, just not as a Hannibal Lecter film. The enigmatic evil genius we see in Silence of The Lambs can only be weakened by being given context. I can still enjoy this film, I just pretend he's another person called Hannibal Lecter, not THE Hannibal Lecter.
Haha :D Star Wars I-III :D Good Origin Story, when Padme died at the moment Leia was born and in the REAL Star Wars she said she can hardly remember her mother from her childhood.
Maleficent is My favorite. I love how Angelina Jollie Become Villains, also I love the Mother and Daughter banding. They change the story of sleeping beauty, but this is the reasons why It was so fantastic. The sequal.
Prometheus is not an origin story. They never show us when and how the Xenomorphs were created. We only get to see the creators of them, aswell as things that let us assume what happened. But the fact is, that they were created before the events of the movie. The whole black goo thing just showed us roughly how they were created, but the result we see in the movie, was not a Xenomorph, not a proto-Xenomorph or a previous state in their evolution or something like that.
Jeremy Washington Sure it is a prequel, but that does not mean it is an origin story. If they made a movie about a guy in the Star Wars universe using the same technology that Palpatine used to create Darth Vaders suit, would you call it an origin story? The fact is, there are no Xenomorphs, no ancestors of them, no Facehuggers or anything of that kind in the movie. There just is the deacon, who was similar to the Alien because it had the same origin.
Here's a fun fact. The man who played the Brides master in Kill Bill also played the same kind of role in Big Stan which was a sort of spoof of kill bill. Also Rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn't technically an origin story. It was a remake of the original origin which was called Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
except for the fact that they simply made a list about Origin history movies from pretty much POP CULTURE Movie Hits in the Hstory of Humanity xD.... so fuck off with that joke XD
Fun Fact: The Planet of the Ape's reboot was not originally a Planet of the Ape's movie. It was actually based off stories the writer heard about pet monkey's escaping. He changed it to a Planet of the Ape's movie after realizing the story he wrote could lead into the series, and for marketing, since it's easier to market a reboot to corporate instead of a new story.
I adore Maleficent. Angelina did amazing. It's nice to see that she is not vindictive because she is psycho. This version she has a legitimate reason. I love how they reconstructed Malificent, the fairies and Aurora's story and the role reversal of Stefan and Malificent.

I think you misunderstand what an "origin story" is. Star Trek? Almost certainly NOT an origin story. At least, not for the classic Star Trek. The reboot is an "origin story" in the sense that it is the first in a franchise of its own. And with Kill Bill vol. 2... Well, the origin story that you mention all occurs over roughly ten minutes of the 2 hour 18 minute run time. I remember now why I unsubscribed.
Gabriel Falkner it's not even an origin story at all. Star Trek. Its aos, alternate original series because the first Star Trek is called TOS, the original series. Its also referred to as The Kelvin Timeline. Its not an origin story at all and I'm really annoyed it was included at all. They need to look up the definition of "origin"

I´m reading the comments and I must ask is Prometheus really that bad? Monsters University, Kill Bill 2 and Star Trek are awesome tho. The Hobbit would have been good if Jackson would have made it in only one movie, instead of including so many unnecessary stuff that don´t exist in the book. And the only reason I liked Maleficent was because of Angelina´s performance, she did it great. I´d wish Disney stopped making so many live action movies tho, and bring up new ideas.
No it's not, I honestly really enjoyed it. Watch it for yourself, it's a mindfuck of a story with great editing and cinematography and fantastic performances from many of the actors within.
it's a really great sci fi, but it requires thought and an understanding of the movies that came before. the first two in the franchise should do - Alien and Aliens. after that, you have to challenge yourself to follow what they are saying. the idea is amazing, but a bit complex.
malificentpurple What would be better? To watch Alien and Aliens before Prometheus or the other way around? I suppose watching Alien first is better because is always the most flattered one of the saga.
yeah, go with Alien, then Aliens, then Prometheus. the third and fourth movies aren't really necessary for you to understand Prometheus, and they aren't as good anyway. but be warned! the first two are SCARY!! (i watch from behind my hands, and with a cat on my lap.)
Martin Freeman was a great Hobbit. 10. Batman begins. 9. The fellowship of the ring. 8. Captain America the first one. 7. Child's play. 6. Ant Man. 5. Prometheus. 4. Star wars. 3. Pirates of the Carribbean five. 2. Kill Bill volume two. 1. Johnny English.
Now i've never seen the Harry Potter series so i may need someone to help me out with this, but how does the logic of 'the whole series is an origin story' make sense? is there *another* series when he's all grown up and kicking ass as a full on wizard or something? even so, then why does The Hobbit get to make the cut considering that whole trilogy is an origin story? i'm confused. please send help.
In theory you could argue wether or not it is an origin story. 1. It is an origin story for Harrys life as a Wizard and Voldemorts life as the “evil wizard“. But those are sadly only a part of the movie. They exist and are incorporated into the movie but they are not the main part and are only supportive elements that make the movie more emotional. 2. As already mentioned in 1. you could say that it aint an origin story 'cause the story ist basically Harrys life. The movie does not start as a flashback and we do not see Harry or somebody else as an old man telling the story. Its more of a “this guy grows up and becomes this and that“, its his life in present-mode. 3. Furthermore, we do not know wether or not J.K Rowling wanted it to be an origin story. We know that it was for her child and at that point it was simply a story that developed into a story of Harry becoming a wizard. In my opinion it is not because there was no intention for it to become one and it depends on your personal opinion. 4. The last point I can think of would be is that there is no base material for a origin story. An origin story would require a reason. An event that needs to be explained or a character who needs to be explained. The whole movie(1-7) has a lot of characters and most backgrounds are not fully explained but we dont need these and Harrys background as well as his friends and Voldemorts are explained and resonable. Well it is based on my opinion, but what I want to say is: if you ever watch the movies you will definitly understand what I just wrote. I could explain and explain but it would be useless because the movies are so full of plot that you can write 10 times the amount of pages the books have and more. I hope my explanation helped you. (And you should definitly watch the movies, if youre bored you got a lot of material to watch, and the books arent bad either. I read each around 10 times because you always forget something) A good day to you.😉
The hobbit is considered origin, because its a prequel that is focused on character building and establishing the universe. Harry Potter is not, because it follows a chronological order, if, I dont know, Harry Potter 4 was mainly about Voldemort´s past and how he came to be, that would be considered origin story. If HP is an origin story, then all movies following the heroes journey as well as other narratives are also origin stories, any movie doing some basic exposition of their main characters would be considered an origin story.
Matias Ahumada the thing that is weird is that the reason they said is immediately cancelled out by 'the hobbit' and the reason you said is the logical reason, but is cancelled out by them saying Spiderman and Batman are left out because they are getting their own video. If what you're saying is true, they'd be cancelled out for the same reason as Harry Potter. The whole Spiderman trilogy is in order so wouldn't be deemed an origin story, purely a story of Peter Parker.
Now we have another actor than Anthony Hopkins portraying Doctor Lecter ... and he´s just stunning :D i love Mads Mikkelsen as well and it´s sad that the series stopped after season 3
I kind of liked that SPOILER all the victims died at the end. I was disappointed at first, just because we're so used to at least one person getting away, but now I appreciate it for doing something different.
Hannibal Rising was brilliant because it defines the origin of Hannibal Lector. It makes perfect sense, because quite clearly the character of Hannibal in the later films definitely has a mild french accent with a large noticeable scar on his cheek. The casting here was spot on. Quite obviously. Bonjour Clarice. I ate his liver with some frogs legs and a nice chateau neuf de pape.
okay, give the Hobbit trilogy all the flack you want, but some of the exchanges between Martin Freeman, Richard Armitridge and Ian McKellan are freakin' amazing
Personally, I am hardly impressed with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." The idea of seeing motion-capture CGI apes just doesn't do better than full make-up designs, as was the case of the previous "Apes" films, and I am talking about the first five from 1968 to 1973.
Not really. The makeup doesn't make them look like apes as much as the cgi does. The cgi is actually really spectacular and realistic, plus Andy Serkis's performance was Oscar worthy. The makeup in the originals was ok at best, but it was inferior compared to the computer graphics of dawn, probably even rise
5:21 dude this movie was amazing seriously it was and if you think about it when she blessed aurora to be loved by all it also meant herself it was almost like a sub conscious self saving grace
Anybody ever thought about how Peter Jackson's parents spent their whole lives knowing him as a B-horror movie director? Who knew he would end up as an academy-award winner
Those who don't want to watch the whole video, here is the list: 10. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 9. Monster University 8. Prometheus 7. Maleficent 6. Kill Bill : Vol 2 5. Hannibal Rising 4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 3. Star Trek (2009) 2. Casino Royale 1. The Godfather : part 2
Amazing how many TERRIBLE and low quality movies made it onto this list. prometheus, monsters U, maleficient, hobbit trilogy. There might be a few good prequels, but gods damn, did you have to pick 2 good ones and 8 univerally panned ones?
Me and my friend thought that Prometheus was the shittiest movie ever that had zero back story or any explanations for what was going on. Then I saw this video, and I just realized it was part of the alien series... Now I literally understand everything!
Here's a free tip to the editors at WatchMojo. Adjust the volume so that the movies are as loud as the narrator. I could hear the narrator plain as day. But I couldn't hear a word they were saying in the movie scenes.
#1 Is the hobbit really an origin story? That's like say the star wars prequels are origin storys... IT's the first book Tolkien wrote, not really an origin, just where things begin. #2... Prometheus was awful, and how dare they try to shoe horn in an Alien in the end and call it an Alien movie. #3... Malificient was awful too. It was just a Jolie fest, ruins the original story to keep the camera on Jolie. #4 Star Trek is a new beginning... NOT AN ORIGIN. #5... Casino Royal is not an origin movie either. IT's just the first movie in the spectre series. Just look at Marvel, Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, hell ever X man 1. Complete failure of a list.

Fully agreed. I was presently surprised they had this at number 1.
so i'm curious what would you change for this list though, since they were all good enough to me.
VixXstazosJOB Prometheus for... any other movie.
i guess XD....
why people hate hannibal rising? i think it was a good movie
just as confused as you man, no idea why it's getting so much hate.
I liked it too
especially Gaspard Ulliel

I liked it.
I have to say, I absolutely loved Maleficent, such a great origin story,..also kill bill kicked ass!!! Lol
Oh and of coarse Hannibal was effing great! But super sad 😔😔

Why. The fuck. Is Annabelle on here. That is one of the worst horror films I've ever laid eyes upon.
Also there's an actual origin movie coming in August. Annabelle: Creation.

10. Batman begins.
9. The fellowship of the ring.
8. Captain America the first one.
7. Child's play.
6. Ant Man.
5. Prometheus.
4. Star wars.
3. Pirates of the Carribbean five.
2. Kill Bill volume two.
1. Johnny English.
The new number one is Joker (2019)
I'm happy that Star Trek and Casino Royale made the list, personally 007 is my #1 pick.
Harambe needs an origin Story
There is...
It's called Donkey Kong
+Richard Rivera Sánchez harambe could kill King Kong with his eyes
ITS TIME TO STOP!
lol I done
W
Emma Stone in "Cruella" should be mentioned.
In the first movie, he is introduced to the wizarding world which he never knew about until this day, so it's the origin of how he became a wizard.
I read each around 10 times because you always forget something)
A good day to you.😉
The hobbit is considered origin, because its a prequel that is focused on character building and establishing the universe.
I belive they said superhero origins would be in another video, since there is a lot of those.
Now we have another actor than Anthony Hopkins portraying Doctor Lecter ... and he´s just stunning :D i love Mads Mikkelsen as well and it´s sad that the series stopped after season 3
I absolutely LOVE Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, it is my favorite Horror Movie of all time so I would of had to put that #1
Oh no
that movie is so bad..
Number 1? No way!
Are you on drugs?
I kind of liked that
SPOILER
all the victims died at the end. I was disappointed at first, just because we're so used to at least one person getting away, but now I appreciate it for doing something different.
Some very good picks on this list! Casino Royale is probably my #1
Update this with Joker
I really like Kill Bill, Malficent, Ofcourse James Bond, or I love the Planet of Ape s!😻😘😇😋😍💞🌼🌻🌼
Godfather part 2 is the best!!!!
Star Wars Episode III?
I think Episode I would be considered the orgin movie
No. No more Star Wars.
Watchmojo sucks that dick enough.
+Alexander Smith ikr
+Alexander Smith loollllllooololo
probably the same deal as harry potter...it took multiple movies so they skip it.
The Godfather Part II is on a league of its own.
Rob Zombie's take on 'Halloween'
...is a reboot, no origin story.
To me, Hannibal Rising was the best origin story that I ever watched because Hannibal Lecter's whole persona made much more sense.
Am i the only one that liked Prometheus?
WëBz Gämïng I liked it but I had to watch it a couple of times. Kept getting confused. It was a great movie.
okay, give the Hobbit trilogy all the flack you want, but some of the exchanges between Martin Freeman, Richard Armitridge and Ian McKellan are freakin' amazing
Well, that's your opinion.
Thank you so much for putting maleficent on that list!!!
X-MEN Origins: Wolverine??? Ok no XD
If only Wicked was a movie already, it would show the beautifully tragic back story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
lol a martini shaken not stirred said a tuna chicken. youtubes cc is great stuff
5:21 dude this movie was amazing seriously it was and if you think about it when she blessed aurora to be loved by all it also meant herself it was almost like a sub conscious self saving grace
What about Rob Zombies remake of Halloween?
I need to exercise but I cant stop watching these compilations
Id hardly say Kill Bill is an origin story.
kill bill 2
Anybody ever thought about how Peter Jackson's parents spent their whole lives knowing him as a B-horror movie director? Who knew he would end up as an academy-award winner
Hannibal Rising is an awful piece of trash. The fact that it placed 5th on this list is ridiculous.
I loved Gaspar as Hannibal in Hannibal rising.
Prometheus was the biggest shit i have ever seen im my fucking life
You are wrong
I agree Prometheus is a great movie
You must live a very sad life.
+Brian Miller nice try being funny
You're not my target audience. Also, lay off the hyperbole--it doesn't actually help support your opinion. It only makes you come off as a dumbass.
Yes!! Casino Royale is so underrated!
What about X-Men origins: the Wolverine?
Or first class?
+Copper Cross watch the first min of the video
at the start of the video they said they'll have a different top 10 for superhero origins. skrub
"Kill Bill: Volume 2" is *not* an original story, it's a sequel with a flashback.
Let me tell you a story
there once was a film called x men origins and watchmojo never gave it credit
basedopn real events
I actually agree with 1 and 2. Finally.
I hated hannibal rising
Those who don't want to watch the whole video, here is the list:
10. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
9. Monster University
8. Prometheus
7. Maleficent
6. Kill Bill : Vol 2
5. Hannibal Rising
4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
3. Star Trek (2009)
2. Casino Royale
Now I literally understand everything!
so, Hannibal rising, and Prometheus made this list? shameful.
Oath
What's wrong with Hannibal Rising?
+BEASTY WRATH everything.
Sonny Fausel Hannibal rising was pretty good
you forgot maleficent
Here's a free tip to the editors at WatchMojo. Adjust the volume so that the movies are as loud as the narrator. I could hear the narrator plain as day. But I couldn't hear a word they were saying in the movie scenes.
I make science videos on my channel!
Hannibal Rising is a very underrated little thriller
Maleficent was pretty good. Still not a fan of them diminishing the mystique behind her character, though.
I know superhero movies were excluded but Man Of Steel lowkey should be top 5.
+Black Ops Zombies no I'm actually pretty smart
+Black Ops Zombies what's so "retarted" about it
Oh lol that's why cmen first class isn't top 3
-or you know, any other superhero origin movie.
Man of Steel was so boringggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg. But it is your opinion.
I know many people didn't like it, but I think revenge of the Sith should be on the list
