  • We all have overlapping identities. Race, gender, class, sexual orientation and physical ability shape our experiences and how we’re seen. Professor Wahiba Abu-Ras, PhD's work points us toward an inclusive society.
Dr. Abu-Ras examined a diverse group of 549 individuals experiencing discrimination based on their multiple subordinate identities: ethnicity/race, religion, nativity and sexual orientation. Her findings provide an understanding of the impact of discrimination and racism on minority groups' mental health within the heterosexual and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) context. The results suggest that subordinate identities and statuses shape the racism and discrimination experiences of the participants.
Each year, faculty members are invited to submit their endeavors in their fields of expertise for Adelphi's Celebration of Scholarly Research and Creative Works. Honorees, including Dr. Abu-Ras, are selected to have their work highlighted and explored.
