+Tevesh Szat I was agreeing with this until I watched Danny suicide a Prophet for literally zero gain and choose to search Doubling Season over Mirari's Wake to support the Helix; Wake does the same thing on a per-land basis but would have given the ability to do a lot more with the rest of his mana; instead of holding up a ton for Condescend and Helix, he could have cast Angus and still had enough up to stop Avacyn's casting.
The Karmic Justice trigger at 22:50 wouldn't have happened in response to blocking and killing Argothian Elder, as its all non-creature permanents and spell/ability destruction only.
i would love to see an 4 player game, after all some decks work better in 4 player than in 1v1, and some work worse. It would be nice to see both of these happen.
Game two, mystical tutor resolves. Instead of grabbing a swords to plowshares, perhaps for wargate? Cast wargate for 0, get maze of ith, Not a strict play mistake because you didn't know what he had in hand, (and he had kalia out). Her plus Gisela would have dealt you 14 of 16 points of damage and you would have survived. Tough tough decisions but great games.
I'm just learning the Commander format and am working on my 1st deck, which happens to be Kaalia. I love angels, dragons, demons, vampires & beasts. Kaalia seemed to be my best choose for 1st attempt. Good video. Wish you showed the cards being played more. I don't know EVERY card.
Am I correct in saying that Everyone forgot about the Doubling Season on the table a lot in Game 2? I don't know if it could have gotten the Pinnacle there or not but.... That card is kind of the Green Mage's dream.
So i've got a scenario in mind that idk if it is correct. So say i slap down kaalia of the vast, and have aurelia, the war leader come down due to kaalia's trigger. From my understanding, aurelia doesn't trigger, but say i cast something like waves of aggression (gives a second combat and untaps your creatures) or similar type card 2nd main, would aurelia then trigger during second combat and give a 3rd combat? Thanks.
He had an infinite mana combo. The combo was using the creature (cant remember name) which allowed him to untap two lands: maze of ith and any mana generating land. Works like this: 1. Use maze of ith to untap creature 2. Tap creature to untap any land and maze of ith then dump mana on helix. 3. Rinse and repeat So essentially he can do this as many times as he likes and each time generating one mana.
Infinite untapping/mana with maze of ith and that creature which let him untap two lands. Meant he could put an infinite amount of counters on the Helix.
Jawknee there's actually a problem with that combo. Maze of ith only untaps attacking creatures. So... the maze would only be able to untap the elder once a free declare attackers step. So Danny cheated.
+Gabriel Regan Once a creature attacks, it is considered to be attacking for the rest of the combat step. Maze of ith doesn't remove a creature from combat, just makes it deal no damage. Therefore the elder is still considered attacking after being untapped, and remains a valid target for the ability.
game 1 the steel hellkite got maze of ithed the turn before danny dropped a stasis, but they forgot to untap it. if david managed to draw a strip mine for the maze he could have swung in with the steel hellkite to kill the helix pinnacle. in the end, it didn't look like he got the right cards anyway so it probably didnt matter.
This series are really funbutinstead doing multiple 1vs1 games you guys could try a 3v3 or a 4v4 EDH batle. Now that would be the definition of epic fun!
You know, David really couldn't have killed Danny's Argothian Elder with Vorinclex during game one, anyhow. Maze of Ith would prevent the damage on both sides. Also, Danny still had Propaganda in play during that last turn, but even if he hadn't, as you saw, Danny would have won anyway. NEXT LEVEL MAGIC.
extraplanar lens interacts with the lands name not land type, hence why that card is popularly pair up with snow-covered lands. gatherer.wizards.com/pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=49440
I think he did on purpose bc his opponent didn't have the white mana and that artifact taps for mana your opponent controls. so he was trying to keep Kalia off the battlefield as long as possible
the turn after Danny played stasis, David should've untapped the steel hellkite bc it never really attacked. he could've then attacked with it, payed 1 and killed off the helix pinnacle.
+bflandragon90 Steel Hellkite entered the battlefield tapped and attacking on the resolution of Kaalia's triggered ability, which was triggered as a result of her being declared as an attacker by David. Danny made David skip his untap step, thanks to the static ability of the Stasis he both cast and resolved. As such, if David had untapped Steel Hellkite, he would have been making an illegal action.
game 1. if argothian elder was tapped maze and another land should have been untapped. game 2 why was there an attack with prophet? that would been game with pinnacle.
Extraplanar Lens doesn't work with Urborg like you might think it does. It goes by the name of the lands, not the type. This is why people who run it use Snow-Covered lands.
I looked up how much Kaalia is and its like 20$ I bought a pack that showed Kaalia in it for 30$ and it had like 100 cards in it so there's a pretty good chance you can earn 10$ more dollars and some more keep buying keep earning
At a target and I did more looking the pack cam with three for sure cards one was Kaalia anothe was worthless and another was ten so you would make a profit no matter what
I don't think he disrespected it. Vorinclex was the better steal to get more creatures through with propaganda. Who would have predicted stasis lmao. It is really ironic though, I agree with you.
Philip Rigabamboo But you have to hard cast Aurelia or wait until the next time in order for that to work..but it's awesome if she's out and you use aggravated assault and stuff
100 card deck, and Danny draws Sol Ring within 3 turns on all 3 games? Damm that's good shuffling. So, mathematically, out of the 6 opening hands with 100 cards each, what are the odds of getting Sol Rings that early for 4/6 of them?
Sometimes I have to come back to a David vs Danny vid to remind myself that people at SCG know how to play commander...
Yeah, it didn't seem like a Superfriends deck, so Doubling Season was an odd choice.
Kaalia had no protection and I'm really not sure what the Angus deck was going for. It just seems like a good stuff deck
Watching these old videos really makes me miss McDarby and West. The new crew is just lacking the chemistry that these two had with each other.
TheBizarreBurrito I agree with this, to an extent. once Wes left and Jeremy was a regular I think things improved drastically for the new guys.
but wes had the best decks
You know the game is scrwed at 20:15 when the kaalia guy attacked 3 of his creatures w/o paying for propaganda.
Krisjude Ramir Comia but he did later
I really hope they keep doing these commander videos, they are a nice change of pace from standard.
I'm so happy to have found this. 1v1 Commander Vs episodes??! Time to binge...
You know, I'd like to build a fair Helix Pinnacle deck and put my counters on it by building a literal tower out of my dice.
I have to say, that was one of the most enjoyable "draw, go" sessions I've ever seen.
These are so much fun to watch, spotted a few cards perfect for my Commander decks as well. Thanks for bringing us a great match after another, guys!
Coming back in 2023 because these guys are awesome! Love their banter!
helix pinnacle that 100 turn clock
Actually it's more like a twenty turn clock - fifty turn clock
Mana Confluence + Grim Monolith.
R.I.P David McDarby, you will be missed(not dead, just gone).
David you have some of the best banter on versus. I love watching the games you're in. Can't wait to see more man.
When they played heartbeat of spring David sang "Hearbeat" it's a song from the jrpg Persona 4 of the playstation ;)
GG
You guys should do a Rafiq of the many commander deck tech
*Plays propaganda*
*never remembers it's in play*
He tapped angus on David’s turn right after casting him. Wouldn’t he have summoning sickness and not be able to use his ability? 39:09
The Karmic Justice trigger at 22:50 wouldn't have happened in response to blocking and killing Argothian Elder, as its all non-creature permanents and spell/ability destruction only.
did anyone else notice west miss a land drop on turn 3 game 1?
by far one of my favorite video series on UA-cam
Commander videos are by far my favorite videos on Star City.
Does anyone know what David keeps saying about Kaalia being Merlinia Inverse?
This video gives me hope for my Kaalia deck against the combo decks. Thanks so much.
Yeah at 40:00 Danny got lazy and didn't tap his mana to use Angus's' ability and drew 3 extra cards with the Revelation.
i would love to see an 4 player game, after all some decks work better in 4 player than in 1v1, and some work worse. It would be nice to see both of these happen.

What's that art on Kaalia? Is it alternate or is my vision terrible? If it is alternate, could someone post a close-up?
could've been the commander's arsenal foil art
In the deck tech David shows it off, it's Lina Inverse from the anime Slayers.
Where can I get those dice?
Am I correct in saying that Everyone forgot about the Doubling Season on the table a lot in Game 2? I don't know if it could have gotten the Pinnacle there or not but.... That card is kind of the Green Mage's dream.
Wasn't Supreme Verdict in his graveyard that whole time he had snapcaster mage on the field in game 2?
Can someone explain to me why Danny West doesn't landdrop at 2:57 on his 3rd turn? Then he couldn't verdict on his 4th! WHAT IS GOIN ON
That's genius, fetching for a shockland tapped on your end step so if you draw your dual it comes into play untapped. STRATS!!!
So i've got a scenario in mind that idk if it is correct. So say i slap down kaalia of the vast, and have aurelia, the war leader come down due to kaalia's trigger. thebored999 Yes.
With which card you played it to the Prophet of Kruphix 33.16?
Can someone please explain to me how he added a bajillion counters to his Helix Pinnacle in game 1?
He had an infinite mana combo. The combo was using the creature (cant remember name) which allowed him to untap two lands: maze of ith and any mana generating land.

Does anybody else notice that Danny doesn't play a land for turn on turn 3 in game 1? He has lands in hand but only casts Sol Ring
my question to Mr. McDarby is how good is a kaalia deck? i want to make one but i feel like it could get easily countered
13:10 was amazing
where is the list of the kaalia of the vast??
is kaalia altered as lina? if so can we see it?
keep on doing these please
o.O what is the alter on kaali?
game 1 the steel hellkite got maze of ithed the turn before danny dropped a stasis, but they forgot to untap it. if david managed to draw a strip mine for the maze he could have swung in with the steel hellkite to kill the helix pinnacle. in the end, it didn't look like he got the right cards anyway so it probably didnt matter.
why you no vindicate at the end of the turn to stop the fogging, and swing lethal
probably something about it being sorcery speed...
As allways, really cool decks, and a hillarious series :D
where is deck list?
Link is now in the description and here www.starcitygames.com/article/27649_Commander-Versus-Angus-vs-Kaalia.html
39:50 he didn't pay the mana to activate angus.. Sphinx should have only been for 4.
This series are really funbutinstead doing multiple 1vs1 games you guys could try a 3v3 or a 4v4 EDH batle. Now that would be the definition of epic fun!

NEXT LEVEL MAGIC.
The money in this video! Also Kaalia is a really super cheap and easy commander to use.
sooo in game one the bant player didn't play a land on his turn 3.... Armature hour at SCG :P
I am a german so in 4:50 there is a pun when mc darby says now he's Todd because the word "to" in german means dead :-D
omg the chop suey reference killed me
isnt the prophet banned in commander?
If you guys are going to make edh 1V1 bids on decks, try using the duel commander rules and b/r lists.
Persona 4 is such a great game, i noticed he sang a song from the game around 55min.
System of a down reference was a stretch, and yet, I got it instantly hahahaha wp.
call me a noob but new to edh do you start with 40 everytime in edh
yep 40 is the starting life total in EDH/commander.
I wish Magic the Gathering had the same support as it does in America, there isn't much going on MTG in the UK other that the occasional PTQ :(
Namedropping Daggerfall, much kudos.
extraplanar lens interacts with the lands name not land type, hence why that card is popularly pair up with snow-covered lands. gatherer.wizards.com/pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=49440
Game 1 turn three, Danny didn't play one of the lands from his hand and put himself back a land drop, why?
Missed a land drop turn 2
why did he not leave maze of ith untapped after the infinite mana combo?
Danny did you miss a land drop on purpose?
Tyler Gehring David you had lethal, blow up his general kali in the angel in hand true conviction?
I think he did on purpose bc his opponent didn't have the white mana and that artifact taps for mana your opponent controls. so he was trying to keep Kalia off the battlefield as long as possible
Danny underused his angus a little bit, in my opinion
It has gotten to the point where green has draw power almost as good, if not better in some ways, than blue.
the turn after Danny played stasis, David should've untapped the steel hellkite bc it never really attacked. he could've then attacked with it, payed 1 and killed off the helix pinnacle.
Helix has shroud
+GingahFun steel hellkite doesn't target
+bflandragon90 Steel Hellkite entered the battlefield tapped and attacking on the resolution of Kaalia's triggered ability, which was triggered as a result of her being declared as an attacker by David.
Danny made David skip his untap step, thanks to the static ability of the Stasis he both cast and resolved.
As such, if David had untapped Steel Hellkite, he would have been making an illegal action.
My friend built a Kaalia land destruction deck.... it can win turn 3 with Master of Cruelties Kaalia combo.
game 1. if argothian elder was tapped maze and another land should have been untapped. game 2 why was there an attack with prophet? that would been game with pinnacle.
GO KAALIA!
Extraplanar Lens doesn't work with Urborg like you might think it does. It goes by the name of the lands, not the type. This is why people who run it use Snow-Covered lands.
NONE of the lands untapped...STASIS.
yes, people seem to forget how cards work some times, like these people :3
Reading is hard, bro
***** I think keeping track of all the cards in play would be a better statement. It's fairly easy to memorize what each card does.
I think they were just messing around at that point, they knew
I wish I could afford an Angus, he's such a badass!
I have one piloting a planeswalker deck, its pretty fun
I love how they realise sometimes that the game actually has rules.
Ugh. Maze of Ith should have untapped Steel Hellkite. That is a pretty crucial game mistake that both players made game one.
And the guy on the right never cast his commander when all his lands would untap anyways.
I looked up how much Kaalia is and its like 20$ I bought a pack that showed Kaalia in it for 30$ and it had like 100 cards in it so there's a pretty good chance you can earn 10$ more dollars and some more keep buying keep earning
where did you buy it?
At a target and I did more looking the pack cam with three for sure cards one was Kaalia anothe was worthless and another was ten so you would make a profit no matter what
It was probably the commander deck that showcased kalia
that's where she's from yes
If you picked up the entire deck recently for $30, consider getting more because they go for upwards of $200 of starcitygames.com
Step 1 Angus Mackenzie
Step 2 Helix Pinnacle
Step 3 Prophet of Kruphix
Step 4 ??????
Step 5 Profit
He also missed propaganda effect in the 1st round...
Poppppp
Mackenzie's ability costs mana, couldn't have sphinxed for 7 and mackenzie'd
I play Angus too, I always lose when I don't play him as early as I can and protect him.
That is because those old school legends were actually fairly costed. Unlike today's legends
So you don't run omniscience with your academy rector?
David disrespected the seedborn muse he could have taken off lord of the void, which would have won him the game. Ah, the irony lol
I don't think he disrespected it. Vorinclex was the better steal to get more creatures through with propaganda. Who would have predicted stasis lmao. It is really ironic though, I agree with you.
A good combo with kaalia is Aurelia and bringing out another card for free and attacking twice
I got roughly 0.0023%, but I'm pretty tired. So yeah, they're probably not shuffling all too seriously, but it depends on shuffling.
Why do you never play angus!?
Flash him in brah!
David forgot to pay for Propaganda around 20:30.
He snapcaster maged his supreme verdict with 5 mana in game 2
Maze of ith prevents the damage so it wouldn't die anyway
NM.... You flashed him in. Got it. Lol.
Maze of ith also prevents damage TO the creature it untaps... The elder should'nt have died.
Danny has a video series called Every Game Ever. Check it out. The_Scrivener
Game 2 should have mystical tutored for maze of ith to go infinite and win with helix pinnacle
Sorry, I mean he should have mystical tutored for crop rotation to tutor for maze
David is the funniest. :#
Angus is the best. I love my Angus.
"Stasis"
"...why?" lmao
NOT THE PINNACLE
God Kaalia is so broken
The one guy looks like Ron Perlman
