I really like my id-50 . I haven’t figured out how to set up digital on just the radio and I love the fact that I can hook it to my laptop and use the doozy app to talk on digital . Really made it very simple to do
It's my daily carry now (in my bags) and great to interact with from my phone... Programming all my dozens of local repeaters is not so great but the speed to program 1 on the fly is great.
Nice to see the Vx3r in the line-up. The size, and useability are top and the batteries being commodity items gives me confidence in keeping it running for a long time.
Well then that seals the deal for me - I've been in the market for the VX-6R but if the VGC does all of that AND is submersible, I'm getting it. Thanks for the rec.
I have a Retevis RT3S DMR HT that I flashed with OpenGD77 and it has satellite tracking and real time Doppler shift correction. You download the keps data within the CPS and write it to the radio. I used it to beacon the APRS digipeater on the ISS a few months ago using a Diamond SRH77CA antenna, no handheld Yagi or anything, during a close pass.
CHALLENGE: Suggest an older model BUDGET FRIENDLY HF ALL MODE +6M transceiver for a new HAM? Solid State, No tubes, but also no waterfall. Just a solid basic HF transceiver? What do YOU recommend? :)
Now I need a yaesu vx3 and an icom Fd-50... thanks, Josh. 😆 I look forward to the upcoming deep dive into the xiegu x6200. I'm digging mine. I need it to stop raining so I can go outside and get an antenna up. 🤙🏾
I'm going with the BTECH version of the VR-N76. The only difference is the GUI on the device and it has 6x30 banks onboard instead of the 16x12banks of the VGC/Radioddity branded radios.
1:24 Great vid as always, Josh. I have the BTech UV Pro version of the VGC radio. The phone connectivity works great, but I have been disappointed with the sensitivity of the receiver and APRS decode. Side by side with my FT2DR, it seems to miss many APRS signals that the 2DR easily hears and decodes, even with squelch off. A better antenna just overwhelms the front end. Anyone else experience this or have a suggestion to improve it?
I'm a relative beginner and UV-25 was my second radio after a UV-5R and it's been honestly really great. I would never take that out and use it as an actual HT lol but as a higher power "mobile" unit that's more mobile than a mobile unit installed in a vehicle or whatever, it's been great! I did ditch the tacti-cool antenna though and replaced it with a 2m/70cm Signal Stick lmao - not feeling the need to do any military LARPing 😂
I have both the VGC NR-76, and the Yaesu VX-6R. Which do I like better? It would have to be the VX-6R. It has wideband receive, and much better scaning capabilities than does the NR-76. Yes, the NR-76 does do all of the APRS things well, but if you like to use your radio to scan, then the VX-6R is a much better choice.
Which one would you recommend for wide frequency range. I would like regular am radio 570 710 770 commercial stations. A;so ham bands. Anything you would recommend for that. Is there a Baofeng hack for that?
@@HamRadioCrashCourseI guess I should have watched all the way to the end. Looks like your reference the Anytone. The reason I ask is because my local radio store is pushing the AT-878 plus. I’m curious if there is a better radio than that one under $400. Thanks!
Josh, thank you for this video. Your recommendations would be super valuable about HF transceivers - 100 watt - that are NOT an SDR based type (ICOM 7300 / YAESU FT DX10) but still a decent radios. Maybe even those that are recently out of production. As always, thanks. KQ4IXD
Is the question for anyone? Or just Josh? They are great radios. Tons of features and wide band receivers. They are discontinued. The downside, small screen. They don't have all of the characters for APRS messaging. A cool feature, when it is plugged in to a power source, the radio will turn on and off as power is turned on or off. I picked up a USB charger and have it connected to an ignition on draw receptacle in my vehicle. So it turns on and off with the vehicle ignition.
This review still shows the Japanese radio companies sell 10+ year old technology at the highest prices they can get away with. Think they think we're stickers? I say, yes.
I have received many radios now and more are coming ,my area is still in a state emergency from a hurricane and I have had great contacts with N4ANE in my area but have run into jerks on 462.700 for freedom of grouping a kin to social media has won out. I have been working in radars sine 1980 and can jump up to many times the wattage being allowed in this civilian world. It appears time has frozen and fear of a big bad wolf has created a police force. I can arc ac or dc to ground and get a CW or Morse code out if the world if they want to here or flash a mirror in the sun. I found that water falling on my land being taxed crazy but RF with old cold war farts being gatekeepers is SAD. I am in a state of emergency right now and in need of normal in the fog of war that nature has given. Do we need to go Longitudinal waves that tesla coils use to seek help.
Funny you're posting this today. I was searching for the best ht this morning.👍
I work in mysterious ways
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Yes you do 🙂
Hahaha
Me too 😊

That VGC is pretty awesome. I’m glad they are updating firmware for that line of radios to allow Bluetooth tnc access

It’s my first radio as a newly licensed ham. I immediately bought another. They’re awesome.
I want one! I've been trying to get one but it's not easy in the Philippines.

That UV-25 is amazing! I didn't know I needed one in my life, but I definitely need one in my life!

The new firmware on the VGC has 6x32 as well

Those Kenwood and Icom units look quite feature-packed
Sweet video Josh, nicely done!!!

I've loved my TH-F6A since I got it in the early 2000's
The VX-3 which I have is also great for AllStar in and around the house! Truly worthy of an honorable mention!
That’s a perfect use case.
I Just picked up an FT5DR 3 days ago, and you release this now? Damn...
You might get a few more days before the PTT crack shows up.
Voohooo, was waiting for this, even though i am not looking to buy, just got the th-75 a month back on deal. Was less expensive than the icom 52 plus.

I do wish they would put out a VX-6r with built in usb-c charging and it would be the almost perfect HT.
He's got a flex radio shirt on I already know I can't afford anything on this list😂😂😂
I miss my old VX5r. That thing was a really rugged little device and lasted for years of hard use. I'm looking at the VGC now, though.
T&E a Tidradio. I’m playing with one right now. Programmable by Bluetooth and an app. Seems to work well.

Can you do a video where you scroll up and down the scope and try to explain what the different digital modes look and sound like?
Like you stuff !!!
What about the Anytone 878? How does it compare to these? Any reason you wouldn’t recommend this one?
I don’t really use it. UI kind of clunky for analog fm

Nice signal corps coin!
So the under $200 VGC will work with Radiomail, but the $750 Kenwood can’t without a dongle?
YT recommended this video a few days late. I have an order of the Wouxun KG-UV9PX on its way.
I just posted it today.
Of the Baofeng radios, has the GT-3TP Mark III been found to be spectrally pure?
Not UV-K5 with all the fun firmwares?
Can you do a review on the new Anytone AT-D168UV Dual-band DMR/Analog Hand held?
Haven’t seen you talk about Wouxun KG-Q10H in awhile. Why do you like VGC VR-N76 over it?
N76 does APRS.

I listened to the whole video and I think that I functionally understood 2 or 3 things 😅
Is the Btech UV-PRO (UHF/VHF) 5W the same radio as the VGC ?
wondering the same thing. They seem the same
@@Bill-v650 i bought both. They are not.
ID-50, all day TX APRS (or whatever) high power every 120 sec like my AT 878?
Are there any M17 capable radios, or is it still too new of a standard?
Where is the tidradio td-h3 ?
Newb here, so the ID50 will scan nearby repeaters and add them to the radio on its own?!
Negative. You download a file off dstar.info to the as card and it does the rest.
How about the BTech UV Pro?
What do you think of the wouxun kguv9px
I’ll keep my D74 until it dies.
Amen. Just gotta keep spare batteries handy and/or plug in charger :)
What do you guys think: ID-50 or ID-52?
The THD74 was the predecessor of the THD75.
… and the th-d72 was the predecessor to that.
Which antenna is on the ID-50?
We want a President Randy with SSB.
Thoughts on the VX-8DR?
I have not really ever used one.

@ I appreciate the info, just picked up mine this week and have been have fun exploring the features. Have you used it on WiresX at all?
If only VGC had a Motorola waterproof connector. Wired accessories are better.
You forgot the Icom IC E7
do I require internet for the VGC VR-N76?
Nope
Nope
I found a TH-F6A for $20 with a blown fuse. Soldered in a new one and it’s good to go!
SCORE!

DO A VIDEO ON YOUR KILLPEOPLE GEAR......
Why are you calling it that?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse BECAUSE YOU DID. IN THE VIDEO................YOU SAID THE ID50 IS THE RADIO YOU KEEP ON YOUR KILLPEOPLE GEAR.
