In part two, the hosts are joined by Carrie Coon (Bertha Russell) and Director Michael Engler to discuss the research they did to prepare for the production, the parallels between the 21st century and the Gilded Age, and the production decisions that were made to create Edison’s illuminating display of electricity .

I just noticed a parallel dialogue with how this episode ended with the season finale of Downton Abbey, which I think captures the sentiment of the writer and perhaps the sentiment of people in those times. It is a dialogue between Isobel and the Dowager Countess.
Isobel : "What else could we drink to? We're going forward into the future, not back into the past."
Dowager Countess: "If only we had the choice."
I love that Ada was hitting Agnes with all the comebacks this episode!!
While I enjoy Amanda Peete's work, I can never imagine her as Bertha. Carrie is the one!
I’m not a huge fan of Carrie, I find her to be so bland across all of her work; but Amanda Peete?! No 😂😂
The most important takeaway this episode was Marion's wardrobe! MY GOODNESS!! That Gold evening dress with the blue ostrich style neckline.. OMG.. I almost lost it.. Everything is like some turn of the century Haute Couture fantasy.. Marion's wardrobe has gotten better and better each week and she is easily the best dressed character on the show. Mrs Russell is close but Marion's wardrobe is insane!! I just had to get this off my chest because its too fabulous for her to be so poor. I mean she dresses better than Carrie Astor and Glady's Russell, I was like who is her atelier, because my goodness... THUMBS UP to the Wardrobe people, seriously I would wear all of Marion's dresses today in 2022, that is how amazing it is.
So loving the costumes on the show, and I agree Marions gold dress was stunning. I have found Bertha and Agnes both have some stunning outfits as well. Peggys outfits are elegant, but more subdued. - which would probably be to do with her having to be careful not to stand out too much - so as not to invite too much attention to herself.
Marion's lavender ensemble was gorgeous
I was surprised to hear that the main designer has a team of only 76 people actually making the clothes, hats, and shoes. I'd think there would be many more. These are couture level dresses. They take time. Take for instance that blood red cloak Bertha wore to the symphonie. Dripping in hand done beading. It's a shame that with all the hours of work put into making it, that it was only on screen for 20 seconds. 5000 dresses and hats have been made thus far. I wonder when they started sewing because thats A LOT of work for only 76 people.
@samantha ssmith I don’t like Peggy’s wardrobe. I think it downplays her. I actually wish that they would put some of the colors they use on Marion on Peggy. They are brighter and it would bring her skin tone out more.
@samantha ssmith I love Peggy but her dresses are more muted and that is purposely done, she wears alot of PLAIDS.. Peggy would be well dressed for OUTLANDER but she is dressing normally, fashionable yet understated for NYC. Marion is the best dressed person on the show and that is the truth, I know fashion and i am just stating the fact but her character is also the main character too so its not surprising.
Each episode needs to be an hour longer.
Also a giveaway for Tom's intentions, was when he was talking about a woman's money in front to Marion, and Marion had a look. He should have not have mentioned a young woman's money. She has an inkling.
I think Tom stole her inheritance. I don't think Marion was pennyless when her father died.

From the preview, I was so certain that the Times building lighting was going to be the Edison elephant electrocution. I'm so relieved it wasn't

The "elephant electrocution" was in 1903 and Edison had nothing to do with it . The elephant was tortured by evil humans and destined to be destroyed. The only "Edison affiliation" was that "Edisons moving picture studio" filmed it… How do I know ??? Thomas Edison's son, Theodore, was married to my cousin Anna Osterhout...

@@prettynerd4779 Really? Who was she based on? The only niece of Henry Flagler I found on the internet was Mary Louise Clisby Lewis (Wise), but she was born in 1895, while the Gilded Age timeline is 1882.
My favorite show ever
One point that should be made regarding the gas lighting in domestic interiors is that they tended to consume a lot of the oxygen in the room, so for the women being laced in their corsets which made deep breathing difficult the periodic fainting spells we a real factor of life.
For a moment I thought Marion was going to sneak out to see the lighting ceremony. Did I miss something?

Bertha's wardrobe is show stopping- the red cape! Marion's is the next best. Ithink Peggy's wardrobe reflects her socio economic class , she cant afford couture get real! Gladys poor Gladys looks like she is 12!
Peggy is very well dressed, her socio economic standing is better than that of Marion without the support of her aunts, but Peggy is a career woman and she is dressing to be taken seriously in the periods version of a lady's power suit with "sensible" ensembles in plaids and stripes and dark colors for her work for agnes or the globe. notice that when she is escorting Marion or visiting her wealthy family she is actually in very stylish and expensive looking clothes
Electricity comes to the rich first because new technologies are always expensive. Thank goodness for the rich paying the higher prices so that eventually, through economy of scale, the price comes down. So don’t make it sound like the lower classes were victims because they didn’t get electricity right. away. To put it in perspective, my mother’s family lived on a farm in Minnesota and didn’t get electricity until 1920. Also, remember how expensive cell phones were when they first came out? The average person couldn’t afford them. And then, through economy of scale the price comes down.
This is true in an unequal, hierarchical,
economy, but not so in a more equal
economy.

I like Mrs Agnes she's good deep down you can tell ,she's just been hurt and hasn't recovered from the let down ,plus she's funny like when you hear her say "send a letter to Mrs. Russell and make sure there's not a hint of warmth" I laughed.
I don’t think she hasn’t recovered. It might come off that way but once you learn how people operate you can’t continue to move as if you don’t. I think she sees people for who they are and moves accordingly.
That line made me laugh so hard!!!

Armstrong is CANCELLED. She is no different than Turner. You would think she would humble herself after that hateful mother she takes care of treats her like dirt. She is jealous of Peggy. The only reason she loves Agnes’ is because she gives her praise as her maid, the same praise her mother doesn’t show her. Peggy came in a stranger and is now essentially her equal. Armstrong handles the personal and Peggy handles the business especially the socialite business. Armstrong doesn’t get to leave the house and attend events with Agnes often. Agnes gets the scoop on events she’s invited to but won’t attend from Marian and Peggy.

Finally Turner is out of the house but I have a feeling that bish is still going to cause trouble. George may weaken and take her as a mistress. Bertha needs to have a little bit more sympathy and kindness but I admire her approach of bolstering up George by showing she has unshakable trust in him.

Love the podcast and the show... One question.. Was it impossible to have video ?? Of course, I appreciate the still shots of the architecture and interior design of the time that is shown but I wish there were video of you 2 perfect podsters and the guests. Definitely, have the tech for it. We all know that. What went into the decision to go no video on UA-cam?
Well to be fair, all of the guests are almost undoubtedly recording from their homes. Kudos to them for not making them video themselves in their own homes! Besides, it's primarily an audio podcast that just also gets posts to UA-cam at the same time it goes on streaming sites like Spotify. No point of recording video for something that has a focus on audio. If it were *just* on UA-cam I'd agree with you, because then it'd be an interview with a focus on visual. But the focus is audio and it being posted to UA-cam is secondary.
@@SeanMcGuire92 I disagree, most podcasts on UA-cam have video, even when the guest isn’t present. Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You, Mayim Bialik’s The Breakdown, Chelcie Lynn & Paige Ginn’s Viral Podcast. Weird to be on HBO and UA-cam and have no video. Especially a high end production like this.

@@shop-a-holic3194 You have to remember Fellow's writing, while he loves a bit of chaos and drama for his character's rarely does he put them in an extended bad situation. Marion marrying Tom, if he is the Raike he is, would put her in a miserable position for a long long time. Marion will move on and find love. That's just how Julian likes things.

I'm loving the show, but honestly the podcast is the highlight of the experience. Brava!
I have a theory (baseless hunch) about Tom. As a lawyer, he's tending to another estate that is about to end due to failure of issue (male issue, if entails are allowed in NY). He also knows the resulting reversion will transfer the estate to a line of descent in which Marian is due to inherit. Think of how he seems to be practicing his new role as an aristocrat. Also think of Agnus's "I'm never wrong" refrain.
I have been thinking along the same lines, that he knows about a fortune she is to inherit, or that her dead father had hidden for her! And yes, Agnes' "I'm never wrong" is always in the background. I think we will see some interesting and shady storylines with Miss Bingham and Tom. Poor Marian
Theory: Her father put everything into railroad stock he was a gambler. Mr Raikes sees this in episode one and tell her that they're not worth the paper they're printed on and from that point on tries to marry her.

@@eswyatt Really? Because that happened right before she moved and we see Mr Russell's railroad company doing very well. So the industry itself is booming as Marion retorts to Mr Rakes. He did something sly....I'm still suspicious of Mr. Rakes. Maybe the revelation about Peggy tonight will help Marion see people in their truth

I was born in 1958 in West Virginia. We had electricity when we could afford it. A lit of times. We used oil lamps and cooked on fire place or stovetop it was rough living but I learned a lot about surviving .
So why is Mr Raikes really so interested in Marion? Is there a dowery out there that her father managed to keep? And where does Mrs Chamberlain fit in that story? I have a theory…..
I pegged Raikes as a liar and schemer in that first scene. I'll be very surprised if Marian's father truly left her penniless. I have to wonder if those "worthless" railroad stocks were Russell shares. I also think Raikes was behind Marian's bag being stolen.

Bertha is a classic narcissist. She sees her daughter as an extension of herself and controls every facet of her life. Not out of love but bc the narcissist must exert control and daughter has no say bc it's all about Bertha, no one else.

What exactly did they mean by having to "tame" electricity? Was electricity already known? In what form?
They knew *of* electricity with electrical storms and such, but how to harness electricity into something they reliably could use was a relatively new science/application during this period. That's why this one period saw new developments like the telephone and the incandescent lightbulb so relatively rapidly; suddenly, the technology and the science was there for them to be able to apply electricity, which they'd known of for a long time but didn't have a way to apply a use for it.
Turner referred to electrical storms and lightening and Church replies that Edison tamed the electricity
Because they could not harness the power and apply to practical inventions. Think of it of seeing a down power cable. You see the sparks (electricity) but you can't touch it or grab the cable. I mean you could...but it wouldn't end well.

Why did the writers change history to fit their narrative? Edison demonstrated electricity in NYC in 1879. Lewis Latimer who the editor of the Globe claimed invented a better filament did not invent the improved filament until 1891.
I realize The Gilded Age is fiction loosely based on facts but there is no need to slight Edison. I obtained the information from a site about the life of Lewis Latimer which reads as follows:
"Latimer invented the carbon filament, a significant improvement in the production of the incandescent light bulb. Latimer filed a patent for the process for efficiently manufacturing the carbon filament in September 1881"
The only person that has truly been slighted is Lewis Latimer.

Edison invented the lightbulb in 1879 Latimer made an a longer burning filament in 1891.Latimer earned money from the purchase of his filament. The viewers were slighted by being purposely mislead by the writers. I am a History Major you cannot change the facts of history to create your own narrative. That is precisely what the writers did. You can Fact Check History or continue to live in Delusion

The massive slight is that Mr. Latimer’s contributions (and so many other inventors) are simply not taught to our population. You have to be a History Major like yourself or seek your own knowledge in order to learn these things. I am glad the show is talking about this subject and perfectly ok with them changing a few years since the overall story is fiction.
Lewis Latimer patented the carbon filament in 1882, the exact same year in which this season is set, and your own quote at the bottom says he invented it in 1881. the show itself even says he invented a filament that improved Edison's existing light bulb, so no one is doing Edison any type of diservice.
No need to slight Edison? My goodness, has noone been taught who Nikola Tesla was and his contributions to indoor electricity in this time period? I mean, he only invented alternating current (AC)....
Ahhhh... but Tesla wanted to provide unlimited, wireless energy to humanity for free. He didnt want to make money off of electrical grids for each kilowatt consumed. Edison and his financial backers weren't as altruistic. To this very day, the same families that controlled the technology humanity had access to are the very same bloodlines of today that pretend the masses must give up all personal liberties to save the planet from the climate change fairy tale.
*On a side note- the sun controls the climate. Carbon is not an enemy to humanity, it is fundamental to our existence.

I'd like to know why they film so much out of sequence.
So they don’t have to repeatedly go back to the different locations. They film all of the Newport scenes, all of the backlot scenes, all of the Troy scenes, etc.
That's common with video and film. I remember years ago when the old TV show Dallas was on, Larry Hagman who played JR Ewing, would do exterior shots at the ranch and several months later interior shots were filmed in a studio. He typically gained btw 19-20 pounds, so he was noticeably heavier in the same scenes.
I don't know it seems like the lady partner in this podcast is in a class, because she doesn't really seem to know this information that she should be prepared for as she's coming from Turner classics.
