Decades after the song was written, eight years after this post, and two years after Dylan won the Nobel, this is still breathtakingly hilarious. We learned a lot from Dylan, but we learned the words to his songs from Baez' translations. Thank you, Mr. Bogle.
That is an admiration of Bob’s talent! Same as ‘Iwent to where all failures go, so I took myself off to Australia’. From the man who wrote Gren Fields of France, The Band played Waltzing Mathilda - admire his genius
+Vonhawkmoon I actually prefer "Gift of Years" for this one verse "And the country that you died for, mate, you would not know it now The future that we dreamed of, mate, got all twisted up somehow The peace that we were fighting for, the end to stupid senseless war So it couldn't happen to our kids - well old mate, it did."
I have had a long double career in Music (I'm a hospital scientist by day, and a professional musician some weekends). My cousin taught me to play guitar back in the seventies largely by teaching me songs by.....ooooh, who were they now..Neil Young.......Bob Dylan.....The Bushwackers, and hence this bloke Mr Eric Bogle. This song cracked me up in the 70's. The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission for you Murricans) was broadcasting a regional music festival that yer maan was playing at. Also came with a lot of Redgum, and Bobsy Die. Shout out to Bobsy Dies' old bass player... I have your fender bass case and I bought it legally second hand for $50 from Soundworks about $30 years ago.
A hilarious song by an extremely talented songwriter. It's not fair comparing Dylan to Bogle though. Dylan can't hold a candle to the songwriting abilities of this man.
I get asked this everyday, but i did learn a few before I learned of the classics that Eric Bogle has given us. If it hadnt been for Dylan's early protest songs maybe Bogle would not have had the impact, who knows. This performance was audience energy generated and possibly OTT in parts.
I totally agree. Have a sense of humor people. I've been known to parity Dylan myself. All around the watch tower gives people a good chuckle. If you're going to be a stand out in a world full of standard. You should have a thick skin. Most hard core fans are rabid. Regardless of the artist in question. But remember. Imitation is the most sincere from of flattery! Or is that flatulence? I seem to have forgotten!
I Love Bob Dylan. But, those of you who write against Eric Bogle, could you be a little sensible and find out that this guy is one of the best Australian folk singers with a marvelous anti-war song ("And, the band played Waltzing Mathilda") to his credit. I have heard from the mouth of no other than Joan Baez, words of mockery about Dylan.
Yes you are absolutely right, this is a little bit of satire, really fun song and performed very well, Dylan also is an extremely talented artist, whether he sings through his nose or not, live and let live I say, and the times they really are a changing, Covud 19 stay safe all
WHY IN GOD'S NAME CAN'T YOU RECOGNISE AFFECTIONATE PARODY TOWARDS AN OBVIOUSLY RESPECTED FELLOW MUSICIAN? IT DOES TAKE SOME INTELLIGENCE WHICH IS PROBABLY THE ANSWER
I agreed with your first comment, and you should have left it at that, but saying it's a rip off of Connolly is just as stupid. If that were the case, you could say that about any two songs written about a similar subject (of which there are thousands). As a musician, I still get asked to play Dylan constantly, so it's a fair enough thing to write about. Connolly worked Glasgow pubs and clubs when "Ten Guitars" by Englebert Humperdinck was popular, and had the same thing, but this is no rip off.
Dylan's work is simply brilliant, he is a genius of unparalleled talent who transcends folk music.Eric Bogle isn't, in my opinion, as talented as Dylan. I think Dylan's back catalogue outstrips Eric's by far. That doesn't take anything away from the beauty of Eric's music.
"Lament to the three cord folk song " I have always taken this song as a bit of fun until I red an article about John Munro [ Bogle's partner on stage] that it wasn't, well Mr Bogle don't forget that you have composed such endearing classics yourself as "You can call me Eric" or should that be Sir Eric what a egotist, shame always licked his stuff, still do but?????
You can have a two songs on the same subject without one copying or ripping off the other, of course you can. But if the 2nd song not only covers the same subject but the exact same feel and fails to live up to the main theme - the humour in this case, then I would say the second is a rip off.
Bob Dylan has written a lot of good songs but in my opinion many like 'A Hard Rain's gonna Fall' is just a list of irrelevant, barely connected subjects from a rhyming dictionary. Nowhere near as a good a lyricist as Paul Simon or Eric Bogle.
Crap! It is not a rip off, and Ten Guitars was an Englebert Humpedinck song. A B side of one of his most popular numbers that became a surprise "hit" for all concerned.

Brings back memories of my first guitar and the first song I learnt.......... Blowing in the wind...... Brilliant
I love Bob Dylan but the guy who wrote "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" definitely has the credentials to go where he goes on this song.

I have sought this song since decades! Thanks a lot.

To all you dissenters...I've loved Dylan since buying his first album in Glasgow back in 1962....but can yez no' take a joke!,,,,FFS!
+Alexander Morton my thoughts exactly - I am a HUGE Dylan fan but he is terrible live !!
Heard someone do this, very well, on Saturday at a Singaround, - brilliant!
And of course, I was next, I did a Dylan song
OMFG, he nailed it! Dylan was a brilliant song writer, but I think I'd rather hear a cat being strangled than listen to him sing.
Just discovered Eric. What an entertainer! Disappointing that his stuff has so few views.
Bloody brilliant ,
"So I boarded a ship for Australia..." It all makes so much sense now.
I get asked this everyday, but i did learn a few before I learned of the classics that Eric Bogle has given us. If it hadnt been for Dylan's early protest songs maybe Bogle would not have had the impact, who knows.

This is very good AND I adore Bob Dylan.
Can't you people recognise a brillant song writer!!; shame on you
So very good. Glad I could post here to make it current, LMAO.
Folk entertainment at its best 👍

Love Dylan but thanks to my parental figure love Eric even more!

+Robin McSporran Scottish by birth - Australian by choice !!
scottish actually
He's born and reared in Scotland, he just has an Australian passport. He's Scottish for sure.
The Green fields of France isn't a bad song either. Better than anything Bob Dylan released (and I like Dylan)
Brilliant!
Love the eric. x
Dylan was and is great. But not when he sings.
Love Dylan but I think I love Eric Bogle more cos now he is an Aussie!!🙂
Poor Dylan! fun song boyo!!

ERIC BOGLE 🏴✝️

Bob Dylan is an over-rated rip-off artist, and it doesn't take any intelligence whatsoever to have that massive fact hit ye square in the face.
Good natured pisstake.
"Just murder good prose and sing through your nose and then you'll sound just like Bob Dylan" !

Huge thank you from a fellow folk singer - at last it's out - I hate Bob Dylan Stuff.....xx

The Green fields of France moves me far more than any Dylan song, it's one of the finest songs ever penned and performed.

Its not even original. Its a rip off of Billy Connolly's "Ten Guitars", ffs
Crap! It is not a rip off, and Ten Guitars was an Englebert Humpedinck song. A B side of one of his most popular numbers that became a surprise "hit" for all concerned.
That is just stupid.
