- Testing of the Panasonic HC X920 at night time. The camera copes very well with bright coloured lighting of just about any shade. Also works well with reflective lighting. The first time I ever used a video camera for the Blackpool lights I lost a great deal of colour, especially from the actual bulbs themselves and believe it or not the Camera was an early Panasonic bought in 1988. Here we are in 2013 and the colours are more in keeping as to what everyone see's if they visit this resort. Hope you like it.

Thank you. I use Yamaha MOX, Roland AX and Roland System 8. I decided to put the music to the video's as opposed to finding something that wasn't mine, although there are some really fantastic compositions out there. I try to put together something that I feel may fit in with the film. Regards Geoff Dean

Not sure if author still read comments but thank you for this video, for about 6 years straight it was only thing that could get my child to relax and fall asleep. So we watched it at least 2-3 thousand times.

This upload innitially became the number 1 Blackpool Illuminations Upload when searching on youtube for some reason for several years, and then eventually more and more people uploaded their own shots which eventually pushed me further down the line. I enjoyed taking the film and then editing it. I miss Blackpool. My mobility's not what it was and I couldn't walk round it any more. But thsnks to you I can enjoy a trip through the lights any time I like now. Just beautiful.

Am I right in thinking that this is not one particular year but a compilation of a few years ?. Whatever it is still a fine film and the theme music captures it.All it needs is the scents of Hot dogs,fish n chips,,candy floss and the waft of good beer as we pass the pubs and clubs. Brilliant.
tony lawrence walsh Hi Tony. I can honestly say that this was all captured within the space of one week during September 2013. I wanted to make sure I filmed as much as I could while I was there and ended up with more than enough for another Movie which I had also uploaded. Thank you Mike.I remember you video from last year, I also visited in 2012 about the same time and uploaded a video, that's when I noticed your upload on the coach which I thought was such a good atmosphere hearing all the passengers commenting on the displays. It reminded me so much of when i was younger and went on holidays with my parents who are sadly no longer with me. The camera I use is a Panasonic HC-X920 and has three colour image sensors built in. Thank you very kindly. I remember the first time I took a camcorder to this place to film the illuminations back in 1988, but most of the colours looked white and bleached out. Fortunately now most cameras handle much better. I have found that at night when filming coloured lights this camera is the one that brings them out the best as it has a 3 mos sensor, red, green and blue which separates all the colours and gives a more defined look. I do have better 4k cameras and although during the daytime or normal light they are fantastic, they can struggle with different coloured night lights. Regards Geoff Dean

I've not seen this years. I'd like to go up and film in 4K, but probably not this year.
Last time I saw the lights was in 2017 0 they were shit. Simple as that. 1/2 of them weren't even working. Always the same when you buy junk from China.

I really enjoyed that trip back in time to when I was growing up in England.....! I live in Perth, Western Australia and the so-called Christmas Lights here are abysmal compared to the Blackpool Illuminations......! You made a lovely job of filming it and made me want to go back and see it for myself....(please don't tell me they don't do it any more...:( Best wishes, Nadia
Thank you Nadia. Well you will be glad to know that the illuminations are still going and hopefully will always continue to do so. They have changed somewhat over the years, I guess making use of modern technology. The whole seafront takes on a real magical ambience during the autumn and when the sun goes down. These are not actually Christmas lights but were originally designed to attract people back to the resort after the summer season, although I am given to understand that some of the lights stay on during the festive period. I've not quite come across anything quite like it anywhere else in the UK. I can well imagine that Las Vegas is going to easily top it, now that's another place I would lover to use my camera at. Geoff.

You certainly captured some excellent video with that camera! I did something similar last season in Blackpool but realise my old camcorder is getting left behind!
I've done several similar to this since, always a good light show when I visit. I remeber the first camcorder I used to film the Illuminations, it was a panasonic and didn't do a very good job on the colours, they were mostly bleached out looking white with a faint colour on the outside. This Panasonic camera is a completely different ball game to that first one I bought back in 1988, this camera has a 3 mos colour sensor which splits the colours seperately and then puts them back together again which brings it out so much more. This is probably the last video shot that shows the Lucky Star Amusements all lit up. The building is now another Wetherspoons pub called The Velvet Coaster.
I always thought that the Lucky Star area looked really colourful and bright, just like a little bit of vegas.
Hello Retterin. It's worth going out and trying as many manual settings as is possible, do it as a test but speak as you do it as to what settings you are using. You may want to just use the IA mode which will give fantastic results or maybe add a little white balance red or blue, depending on whether you want it with a warm or cold effect. Shutter speeds are worth playing with. As the Camera is so good you won't have a great deal of trouble in well lit or even partially lit areas.

the big glass ball here in the video is that still there as i havent seen it any of this yrs illumination videos, plus there seems to be a lot less lights been put up and i am wondering if thats just down to the coronavirus pandemic as to why not many lights are up
The Glass Ball may still be there, I'm not completely sure. Not sure about the amount of illuminations this year, but I would imagine that Covid could indeed play a part of it. Roll on next year and hopefully things back to normal. Regards. Geoff Dean
hope you do a 2020 one, ive seen one but its not all that good you just dont get the full effect unless the lights are all that good this time around .

Hi Andrew. I can't remember off hand exactly what settings I used, but I resisted using most auto settings and went straight into manual. The frame rate was 25fps, the shutter speed was 50, that much I know for sure, I used the manual focus wheel a great deal. Because there is a vast area of lights I try to look for lights that are not right on top of me but further up the road, I then zoom into them, then I focus, I find doing it this way seems to bring out the colours so much better, also don't forget to use a tripod. Other settings you may like to experiment with while shooting is the white balance presets, try sunny mode, or halogen, actually try them all and you'll likely find a couple that you like which will add different atmospheres to the movie. I try to use 25fps in most of my movies and 50 shutter speed to create the film feel and look. Thanks. Geoff.

Thank you for that. When I first put this up onto UA-cam I felt exactly the same as yourself at the time. I wanted to keep things as still as possible to avoid blurring and out of focus, I also remember having and watching others who's colours bleached out to an almost white with a mild hint outlining what the original colour should be, and even then it was extremely faded. We've come a long way since then and now I can boast of having far greater quality than you see here. But on saying that, this camera has a three mos sensor for picking up all individual colours and was really ideal for night time filming of all the coloured lights. Regards. Geoff Dean

Geoff Dean Does this camera shoots in 25p too cause I read the specifications and seemed it filmed only in 50i/50p . I'm sure you already used an external mic, I have a professional sennheiser lavalier clip can I plug it directly in the mic input or this powered-plugin function create noise and other issue? wocmultimedia There are two versions of this camera, One for the USA and countries that use 60p and 30p modes and the European which I own and shoots in 50p top mode which is 50fps, I shoot in the second one down which is 25fps, It appears to be exactly the same quality as the 50 but only half the frame rate to give it a more cinematic type look. The Panasonic also has a cinema mode within the camera. As of yet in this particular camera I have only ever used the internal mics, I didnt get on too well with the 5.1 and opted for the stereo, Also I set the volume levels from auto to manual which made a great deal of difference, the final thing that I had to do when filming out doors is to make a covering for the internal mic to cut out wind noise which actually works pretty well; I cut a square of black sponge from an old foam mic cover and placed it onto a very thin strip of blue tack carefully applied all around
the edge of the internal mic, placed the foam sponge firmly onto that and covered the very edges with Black Insulating tape, I know it's a little unorthodox but it does work. I would imagine that most external mics will work, but unsure as to whether they will need to have there own batteries or not. Hope this helps. I got the mic idea from another guy on youtube who was looking at one of my uploads.

I looked for detailed info in Panasonic website but it's very useless cause the camera is thought for consumer use so specifications lack of important details. I made the same question about mic to Sennheiser but never replied, it seems that in this period professional questions are not admitted. So I will make some test when I buy the camera...Bye and good luck!
wocmultimedia I'm certain you can attach virtually any type of mic to this unit one way or another, but I have no idea what the sound will turn out like. The Camera I would very much call a semi Professional because it packs so much into a the prosumer camera from the top of the range professional camera's. I'm sure you will not be dissapointed and believe me these camera's are fantastic.

Sorry to hear about your Mum, I know what that means as I still think back to our family walking with my Mum along the Blackpool Promenade back in 1983 buying Fish n Chips and going into the Pleasure Beach.
