Thanks for subscribing. We love sharing tips for making Switzerland and European travel easier and more enjoyable.
Hey Sarah you are the same girl from how to Switzerland and I love it great job
Thanks for watching, Dina! We've been lucky enough to work with Sarah these past few months to create some great new videos. Hope you enjoy them!
just awesome
Thats very good to know, and i heard cash is more widely used then credit cards?
I've found buying currency before leaving on vacation at a designated foreign currency place has been a good choice. The rates are generally far better than banks. Plus they'll often stock more unusual stuff at better rates. Even common stuff like the USD or EUR are offered at better rates (both buy and sell). The CHF is very easier to get. It is considered a major, and very stable currency.
By the way, a 1000 Franc note! That is awesome! Do people use a stack of those to buy, say, a new car?
Yes, they do! In Switzerland, people prefer using cash over a debit or credit card. The ATM 's there usually only dispense 100 Franc's, and vendor's don't even bat an eye when you use 100 Francs for small items. In the United States, restaurants and other places usually ask for bills that are smaller than 100.
Only experience I've had in other country is Mexico . Took USD then went to bank there as it was more convenient to exchange USD to pesos . Paid hotel with credit card and paid everything with local currencies = pesos . ALWAYS ASKED for passport for this and hotel .. Imagine if I'd tried to vote ..
Did you change the name of your UA-cam Channel? Do you still post on how to Switzerland? Please give an update on this. Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Sarah still produces lots of great videos for her How To Switzerland channel, and we wanted to tap into that local Swiss expertise for the Alpenwild channel too.
Zurich to weggis taxi rate?
According to rome2rio.com, the cost is approximately $270-$330 to ride a taxi from Zurich to Weggis. You could take a train for approximately 30 CHF as well, according to the SBB app.
No, no, no! Don't just "take out cash out of the ATM". Please search around before posting such advice! Many banks have very bad currency exchange rates and/or added fees for not paying in the currency the card was issued it. Just a concrete example: while living in Italy for ~8 months, we lost ~1000 EUR to this.
So: for short term travel using your card is mostly ok. If you can plan ahead however, get a Transferwise Borderless Account or Revolut (both can be set up for free in a couple of minutes), which will give you credit-cards that do currency-conversion very near the "real" market rate. You'll thank me for this later.
Other than that, Sarah is right. I don't think I touched cash in the last three months in Zurich.
For most US travelers withdrawing just a few hundred dollars cash from an ATM is still the best way to get cash in Europe. For those small amounts, you’ll get a better exchange rate from an ATM in Europe than you will from your local bank in the US. Before you depart the US, confirm the international transaction fees you’ll pay. Because as you found out, getting cash from ATMs for living expenses over a long period is a very inefficient way to get cash.
Passed by there for 3 hours and I just ended up using the euro :')
Good plan--For a quick stop of just a few hours and less than $20 or so, it's hardly worth it to change your Euros to Francs. Remember--every time you change money, you lose money.
In most cases, that works out fine. Change will be in CHF 9 to 10 times, though, and exchange rates are not for your financial benefit, you will pay for the convenience, but for small purchases, the money loss is minimal.
I am a resident of India I want to work in Switzerland can you sponsor me
