Installing AREDN Firmware on Mikrotik Device with Windows

  • IMPORTANT: I may have bricked a LHG HP5 dish, I suspect by not allowing the router to ever do a first boot to Router OS (the default software). I flashed the device directly out of the box, it never got a chance to boot up before I reset it. I highly recommend you allow the device to load into Router OS at least once before attempting this. Working on fixing it, but it's not looking good.
    Additional Notes:
It is common to get the '.elf' file loaded and the system upgrade step to fail the first time. It generally works the second time you repeat the process of loading the ELF file and uploading the firmware.
    Downloads:
    Tiny PXE: reboot.pro/file...
Or here of that link doesn't work

Please read the updated description. Do not attempt to flash a LHG-HP dish without letting it boot into Router OS at least once.

Nice work. You can keep the filename of the .elf file, no renaming required. I'am going to make a video in german language. 73

I just purchased a GLiNET GL-USB150. The directions say to use your Microtik instructions. This is a WiFi only device so no ethernet. I would love to see another video for flashing the GL-USB150.

never mind. I was wrong. There is a separate procedure to upgrade this device.

Ray, can I use this same procedure to program a BaseBox? Wasn't sure if the same Windows process will work on all Mikrotik devices. Thanks for sharing this with us! 73, Ron N4RT

Thanks for this. I got the router flashed no prob but my dish will not pick up an ip. It goes into PXE boot mode no prob- and I can also boot it normally and see the default GUI so i know it is not bricked etc. Suggestions?

Having problems with the firmware uploads. I get as far as HTTPD error, socket error 10013 Access Denied. I have turned of the firewall which has not seemed to help. Cant seem to get past this step just prior to doing the reset on the routerboard. Any ideas?

I have not seen that before. Let me research.

Some quick thoughts. Make sure that tinypxe is running as admin, and that windows firewall is turned off, and that the network type is set to private and not public, it asks you this when you first connect to a network and asks if you want to allow other computers to access your device. If this is not allowed you will see that error.

@@soozler Thanks, I had the Firewall off and running as admin. I ended up switching to a different computer and getting a little further. I will let you know if I have sucess. Thanks, N6TEB

@@n6teb oops just realized I was replying from my other account. Another thing that will cause that is if port 80 is being used by some other application on the machine. Typically I have seen this with Skype. You might be able to disable httpd , I think there is a checkbox for it on tinypxe. I don't know that it is actually needed.

Update for anyone interested. This error seems to happen if you change the IP settings on your network connection after you start TinyPXE server., or if you update the static IP to 192.168.1.10 and don't actually close the properties window. Just updating the IPv4 settings and closing that window doesn't apply them. The properties window actually has to be closed for them to get applied for some reason. I was able to solve it by closing TinyPXE and opening again.
