  • This video discusses a sample problem on sight distance in vertical curves.
    Sample problem:
A 5% grade intersects a -3.4% grade at station 1 + 990 at elevation 42.30 m. A summit parabolic curve will be designed connecting the two grades with the following specifications:
    Design speed: 60 kph
Height of driver's eye from the pavement: 1.37 m
Height of an object over the pavement ahead: 100 mm
    Perception-reaction time: 0.75 s
Coefficient of friction between the tires and the pavement: 0.15
    Determine the following:
    1. stopping sight distance
    2. length of curve
    3. elevation of the highest point of the curve
