Doug, you may know that this track, Magnification, and In The Presence Of, are both on the Symphonic Live 2001 DVD. They are both highly recommended on this performance, especially the outstanding In The Presence Of. The orchestra is different; it's the European Festival Orchestra.
Magnification is a vastly underrated album. It was really hurt by the fact that it was released on 9/11/2001 and the world you could say was a bit distracted. It’s worth listening to in its entirety. Give Love Each Day gives me chills.
I remember that I was deeply touched by the first listening the song and the closing section of the song, driving home from work where we saw the tragedy in NYC just hours before....
Magnification is a magnific-ent album. As someone who grew up during the golden years of Yes, I endorse what several other commenters have pointed out about KeyStudio--a collection of all the studio tracks from the 2 Keys To Ascension albums. Superb.
In The Presence Of on this album I put right behind CTTE, Awaken, Gates as epic YES, then Reveling. Hope you give it go, the live recording on YT is excellent. Nice Reaction to Magnification
I think one thing that makes this a special Yes album is that this was one of the very few albums since the 70s where Anderson, Howe, Squire and White were left alone to write Yes music again. In most all other cases, since the early 80s, there was always a "new guy" in the fold and that changes the formula and end result greatly. You had a newcomer inserting their idea of what Yes should sound like. Here, they don't need that, the sound of these four guys together just IS YES. The Keys albums from the mid 90s are the only other instance of that. Of course those have Wakeman too. I love this album, it seems to be a fitting swan song to the Anderson era. Nothing since has really come close, despite their best efforts. Which are usually good... But...
This record was like going home. As much as I loved the 90s albums, this return was so refreshing. I have struggled with everything since and I can't stand the last two, but the catalog from this record back is such a gift. Thanks Doug!
I can't wait for you to dig into Talk, the end of the Rabin era. I've long held it as one of my absolute favourite Yes albums, and it's criminally underrated. I know you'll love it
Magnification and KeyStudio are the best two albums since the 70’s but the record companies involved hardly promoted them so their sales were relatively poor. The best songs from Magnification are DREAMTIME and CAN YOU IMAGINE but the KEYSTUDIO album, released in 2001, is even better !!
I love quite a number of Yes albums, but this one is beloved by me and, I'm pretty sure, a lot of other Yes fans. Magnification gave me a lot of musical comfort after 9/11. The album was released the day before and I listened to it virtually every day for months afterward. I love it. Thanks for this video, Doug, and I hope you enjoy the other songs on the album as much as you enjoyed this one. I believe you will. ❤✌
Doug, you've got to continue with this album and get through it in '24! Magnification is the crowning achievement of their later career, and the last time they scrape the heights of the classic period. A fitting swan song for Jon with the band. The song Magnification is, well, magnificent, but I don't even think of it as a highlight of the album. It swings in with a blast, and sets the tone - but there's so much greatness here. Masterpiece after masterpiece, culminating in "In the Presence Of". Boldly go...
I understand that it's heresy for many Yes diehards to hear this statement, but I absolutely love this album, along with "The Ladder," and I say this as someone who worships "CTTE," "Fragile," "The Yes Album," etc.
This is great! I enjoy your reaction to Yes songs. I was listening to 'Kind Crimson - Red' yesterday and thought of you, because it's such an incredible prog-rock album and believe you would enjoy doing a two part, full album reaction to it. Merry Christmas, Doug.
Dreamtime is a masterpiece from this album in my view. Another to listen to is Can You Imagine?. It is a favorite of mine mainly because Chris sings lead, and it was part of the XYZ sessions with Jimmy Page.
Really glad to see you reacted to this!!! When people react to Yes so many react to 70s Yes, and rightly so, but there are so many treasures from the 80s and 90s that nobody touches on. Glad you reacted to this from 2001!!! Several great performances on this album!!! Also don't forget Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford and Howe!!!
Thanks for giving a listen to Magnification. Magnification and the preceding album from 1999, The Ladder, are the last Yes album that I consider as being excellent. I particularly love the energy and fresh sounds on The Ladder.
I saw The Ladder tour in high school and played the Homeworld game religiously. It felt fresh and contemporary and energetic. They were still playing songs at good, fast tempos.
@@gthobaben i totally agree with you: The Ladder sounds fresh, contemporary, energetic. They were great during that tour. I would have loved for them to do another album with Fairbarn, but sadly it wasn’t to be.
The only time I saw YES was in 1972, about a year after The Yes Album was released in February of 1971. However, YES was not the only band on the bill that night. YES opened for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Each band played for 2 hours apiece. The second hour of ELP, they did the entire album of Pictures at an Exhibition which had come out In November of 1971. Also, Fragile from YES came out in November of 1971! It was the first time I heard Roundabout live! I have no superlatives to describe what we heard that night.
Doug please please please listen to Give Love Each Day. It will change your life. It’s very life affirming and enhancing and joyous. You could end up listening to it as you wake each morning.
For me the last great Yes album that wouldn't be out of place amongst their gems from '71 to '77 I danced with my daughter at her wedding to Soft as a Dove and she had the album on morming before the wedding car came to pick us up.
Another excellent review Doug. This is a fantastic album, probably in my top 5 Yes albums. This track, In the Presence Of.. and Give Love Each Day are 3 of my fave Yes songs.
“Magnification” is a Jon Anderson classic, right up there with “Awaken” and his numerous compositions from the 1970s. If it had to be his last album with Yes, it was certainly his finest.
I agree with another viewer, this album is criminally underrated. The next song this leads into is great. As another viewer said in the presence of is the crown jewel of the album.
Saw Yes on Nov 20th 1972 on Long Island.(I have the ticket stubs) Band blew me away, All great musicians !! I own all the Yes LPs .... So many great memories of my youth.
"In the Presence Of" as others have said. Also check out another album, "The Ladder" and it's lead track "Homeworld (The Ladder)". Has some really experimental, but proggy/pop-ish songs.
Magnificant!!! I never knew that was the San Diego Symphony. I was born and raised in San Diego, saw Yes a few times in my teens. Being elevated out of your seat by Chris Squire in the San Diego Sports Aroma on the Close To The Edge tour? Y’all…
Hi Doug, thanks a lot for this review! The signature change before "Magnifica- Magnification" part is out of every logic and sound fantastic! In my mind I´ve heard always an A chord somewhere before the E, thanks again for clearing my doubt. I found this album accidentally so to say in a supermarket in Ferrara (Italy). I think its predecesor was "Talk", an album with one of the most epic drum sound in the entire recorded music history in my opinion. Both albums were worth the buy. Actually I am working in my studio on a version of "Can you imagine" for my UA-cam Channel, a song which is the track number 5 in "Magnification" as well, and was originally an embryo demo for XYZ, the band that could put together Chris Squire, Jimmy Page and Alan White but ended in the reunion of Yes for 90125 with Trevor Rabin. Funny is that Jimmy Page used the guitar riffs he played in that demo for another song of The Firm whose name I cannot remember now. Greetings from Germany!
Wife and I did see Yes in Vancouver B.C before they released this album and still played 4 of the songs. With the Vancouver symphony behind them. They also played CTTE. Ritual (almost 30 minutes long) and Gates of Delirium. Was one of the best yes show I have seen. Have seen them 9 time so fare.
Just tuned in and just wondered if you've ever checked out their "Union" LP? Yes, it's Yes, but a little more 'rockish'. It's more or less a 're-union' of the main-5, as I like to call them, with Jon, Rick, Steve, Allen and the last Chris Squire. I wish, if you have not already done so, you could give this one a whirl -- with headphones it will drive you, for it has so many changes, it's just awesome. Cheers, and great video as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh Doug man, happy happy Saturnalia to ya. And yes that is to say celebrations to those who celebrate the Ancient Roman sharing of their harvest goods to their family and close friends.. Luv your work man, I always look forward to your posts..
Thank You Very Much for this video of your reaction to Magnification by YES. God Bless You, Doug 👍 You have placed a smile on my face and in my heart. The sound of Classic YES; after numerous line-up changes during the 80’s and 90’s….Fantastic! * Merry Christmas to You and your Family. Take Care.
Doug I’m being 1000% serious when I tell you that this is actually sincerely my favorite Yes song ever and it’s been that way since the first time I heard it over a decade ago!
So glad someone else noted how Important the release date of this album was! Released on the 10th of September 2001! The world and the US especially was in a state of shock! Our everyday life changed on that day…and Magnification(which is a Fantastic album) was overshadowed by this tragedy!😮 I love this album(definitely a road trip CD!) Feel Good from Yes!!❤
Hallo Doug, I´ve seen YES in those Days in Frankfurt . They played their Musik wth a young Orchester. Unforgetable great Sound ! I Wish You Great Christmas Dietmar p.s.do you know Jon Andersons Christmas Record " 3 Ships "
Sadly I think by the time they returned to a more progressive sound (around Keys to Ascension) a lot of the old school fans had already written them off as more radio friendly pop rock, but I love pretty everything they've done, including the non-Anderson later works (Heaven and Earth being embarrassing the exception).
Nicely done Doug...I see your "air" drumming coming along with the open/closed HiHat addition at about the 8:12 mark. Great song, love the Symphonic Live 2001 Amsterdam version too! Could you do Todd Rundgren's band; Utopia's : "The Wheel" at the Royal Oak, 1981 Detroit? Thanks for all you do, Merry Christmas !
They took this show on the road. Saw them at PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. Guess keyboardist was Tom Brislin, who did a great job. There's a DVD of the live show.
Not sure the best way to send a listening suggestion your way, but I listened to Mind Drive the other day off the "Keys to Ascension 2" album and thought, "I would love to see Doug's reaction to this piece."
I submitted this request for a full album Extended Play Longe. However, I will happily accept this title track. My favorite are: Spirit of Survival, Dreamtime, and In the Presense of. Thanks Doug.
Great one Daily Doug. This album is special for me. I had been a huge fan of yes since my teens and finally got to see them live for the first and only time during this tour in Toronto and Jon Anderson was there. I had no idea it would be the end for him in that band. I now feel very fortunate about that. This album is underrated for sure. Like you said, a return to their more progressive sound and arrangements of the 70’s and why at the time the album may not have done so well in sales or was it because people were intimidated by the orchestra replacing the keys - which for me it made the album stand out. What do the keys do other than replace what an orchestra would play anyway. Thanks for that post. Great work.
As others have said 'In The Presence of' from this album is another treat from this album. There is a live version of 'Magnification' that resolves into 'Don't Kill the Whale' from Tormato. I think you will like it. No orchestra, Rick Wakeman is back on that tour.
The MAGNIFICATION album was their BEST & most brilliant attempt at REDISCOVERING the authentic beauty of past EPIC YES since the 70's. After touring with the reunited Classic Lineup since 1995 it should have been much MORE successful financially! The Orchestras on this Tour were absolutely MARVELOUS and they also hired an incredible keyboardist, Tom Brislin. The Orchestra gave this 2K older era YES a more classy or mature quality. In total there's is only one song that was written by Chris call Spirit of Survival which I don't particularly like because it feels a bit too mainstream yet his other contribution, where he sings lead vocals "Can You Imagine " is absolutely wonderful. All the others are incredible ! Sadly, It also was Jon's last Studio album with YES. When you go back into this lineup's early 90's work, please KEEP IN MIND " THAT, THAT IS" off their semi-compilation album, 'Keys to Ascension 1' . One of their BEST SONGS since 70's YES
Doug….listen up! Firstly Happy New Year! For your next reaction from this album you might want to consider Give Love Each Day….after listening to your ‘reactions’….(an undervalued label for your educated insights and professional understanding of the music) for several years now I think I know just what rings your bells. The orchestral arrangement in this piece….well I can almost guarantee you will be blown away and you’ll know what I mean as soon as you listen to it. Peace and Love.
Happy New Year Doug!!!!!! Let us ask God for peace for the world, that children do not go hungry, that crimes related to trafficking and drugs end, that the privileges of politicians end, and that there be a fair society of rewards and punishments.
When this came out they did a couple shows with orchestra, then Rick heard it and liked it and rejoined the band for touring. It was great I followed them to a few differnent shows, it was kick ass fun.
Amazing album, too underrated. The orchestra is a part of the band, all songs are written thinking about their orchestral arrangements. The result is impressive. Thank you for your perfect analysis!
Love your takes on Yes, Doug. UA-cam restrictions aside, you should try giving the album a listen through in one sitting. The 2nd track, Spirit of Survival, practically begs to be led into by Magnification. IMHO, the whole album benefits from being heard in its entirety, like the Beatles albums of yore.
I was lucky to see this tour three times and it was an amazing tour. Very well documented on their Symphonic Live concert DVD. The rest of the album is great. Sadly released in Sept 2001, so it was overshadowed by major world events. A shame as a few influential industry moguls were predicting great things and awards, etc.
This album is amazing and didn't get the recognition it deserves because it was released in America on 9-1-1 or the day after. In The Presence Of is a classic!
Doug! Great video! You’ve gotta check out some yes that doesn’t feature Jon Anderson! You should try out either Drama (1980) or Fly From Here (2012) which was written with material from the Drama sessions lol. More Yes Doug!!
"In the Presence Of", from this album, is a real gem
Agreed, it's up there with some of Yes's best pieces. Definitely the best piece of music from this fairly strong album.
Yup, echoed my thoughts. That is "the one" on this album
One of my top 5 Yes tracks.
i think all song from this fantastic album is very good, probable is the only one album, which has so unreal, unique and magical sounds and structure
Highly agree.
Doug, you may know that this track, Magnification, and In The Presence Of, are both on the Symphonic Live 2001 DVD. They are both highly recommended on this performance, especially the outstanding In The Presence Of. The orchestra is different; it's the European Festival Orchestra.

It was released on the 10th in the UK and actually available a few days earlier in some shops.
The only song on Magnification I skip is Don't Go, not because it's bad, but because it's pop that's not very good.
Magnification is one of my YES favorite albums. Criminally underappreciated.
It IS my favorite Yes album!
Dreamtime is a worthy listen!
Wait until you hear 'Dreamtime' and 'In The Presence Of', the two best songs on this album in my ever so YES loving opinion!🤩
Magnification is a magnific-ent album. As someone who grew up during the golden years of Yes, I endorse what several other commenters have pointed out about KeyStudio--a collection of all the studio tracks from the 2 Keys To Ascension albums. Superb.

Fantastic album, somewhat overlooked & underrated but also was a comfort to me in tempestuous times in early 00’s!!
Been waiting some time for you to cover this album. Derided by many Yes fans but I find it uplifting. Well done Doug. Have a great Christmas.
I first heard this album about a decade after it came out. Don't know how I missed it, but immediately thought it was a classic once I heard it.

Got chills right off the bat. I love this song.😊😊
I love this album......... That's it. No in depth reasons as to why. I just love it.
Heard this in concert at St. Michelle Winery venue, before the album was released. It was Amazing!
I understand that it's heresy for many Yes diehards to hear this statement, but I absolutely love this album, along with "The Ladder," and I say this as someone who worships "CTTE," "Fragile," "The Yes Album," etc.
Totally agree!
Me too, classic Yes.
Please do more from this album. It’s fantastic.
Masters of well-orchestrated syncopation and rhythms, a hallmark of Yes compositions. Thanks. First timer for this tune.
This is great! I enjoy your reaction to Yes songs. I was listening to 'Kind Crimson - Red' yesterday and thought of you, because it's such an incredible prog-rock album and believe you would enjoy doing a two part, full album reaction to it. Merry Christmas, Doug.

It will change your life.
It’s very life affirming and enhancing and joyous.
You could end up listening to it as you wake each morning.
Same here with We Agree as a close second.
For me the last great Yes album that wouldn't be out of place amongst their gems from '71 to '77 I danced with my daughter at her wedding to Soft as a Dove and she had the album on morming before the wedding car came to pick us up.
Thanks Doug, loving all your work. The rest of Magnification will be a treat!
Beautiful, beautiful! The "Choir" and Orchestra! Beautiful Yes work! Peace, Love and Happy Christmas for All! 🙏

Y’all…
Instantly, within the first couple of bars, a balm to my soul. No-one else like them.
I look forward to seeing the videos for the rest of this release… I ❤ this album!!!
In the Presence Of is the outstanding track on this album, can't wait for you to do a video on that onr!
This tour was absolutely magical. I concur with everyone else that "In the Presence Of" also deserves a listen.
Funny is that Jimmy Page used the guitar riffs he played in that demo for another song of The Firm whose name I cannot remember now. Greetings from Germany!
Thanks Doug, great album great analysis
Wonderful album. Wonderful.
Beautiful album.

Luv your work man, I always look forward to your posts..
I'll pitch "In the Presence Of," (live Symphonic video).
The guy who played keyboards in that concert (it was in Amsterdam, right?) was a total genius. I have the DVD still now.
Thank You Very Much for this video of your reaction to Magnification by YES.
God Bless You, Doug 👍
You have placed a smile on my face and in my heart.
The sound of Classic YES; after numerous line-up changes during the 80’s and 90’s….Fantastic!
* Merry Christmas to You and your Family.
Take Care.
I LOVE this album. So glad you analyzed this song. Bravo!
Fly from here return trip is a masterpiece
Happy New Year Doug, this album show clear influence of Stravinsky.
I worship this album!!!
A late masterpiece by Yes, you gotta listen to In the Presence, a gem!
Changes and Hearts on 90125 are both great prog songs.
This wonderful music saved my sanity.
Doug I’m being 1000% serious when I tell you that this is actually sincerely my favorite Yes song ever and it’s been that way since the first time I heard it over a decade ago!
Thank you Doug for playing this gem, somebody bringing to light a vastly underrated album😊😊😊
I think Dreamtime could have been another Yes classic if they played it live.
"Endless Dream" off of Talk is a must for you to react to. An epic that stands up to their great 70's masterpieces, and I don't say that lightly.
Superb song. Love the version on Symphonic Live. But yes, superb song - glad you love it too Doug.
"In the Presence Of" an "Dreamtime" are great!!!
So glad someone else noted how Important the release date of this album was! Released on the 10th of September 2001!

I Wish You Great Christmas
Dietmar
p.s.do you know Jon Andersons Christmas Record " 3 Ships "
excellent selection for friday Only I miss your recomendetation of special drink to enjoy listening this master piece
I found this album quite late on after listening to the live version of "In The Presence Of" which has become one of my all time favourite Yes tracks.
Sadly I think by the time they returned to a more progressive sound (around Keys to Ascension) a lot of the old school fans had already written them off as more radio friendly pop rock, but I love pretty everything they've done, including the non-Anderson later works (Heaven and Earth being embarrassing the exception).
Magnífico ! 😄
i think is best prog-rock symphonic song, high-quality, clean, unique, inspiring, when i listen this album, in my mind is opening fantastic landscapes
This song is my ringtone.

Yes. Just say Yes to Yes
They took this show on the road. Saw them at PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. Guess keyboardist was Tom Brislin, who did a great job. There's a DVD of the live show.
It is a fantastic album. The tracks they played from it in 2002 with Rick, which included this one, were great!
Not sure the best way to send a listening suggestion your way, but I listened to Mind Drive the other day off the "Keys to Ascension 2" album and thought, "I would love to see Doug's reaction to this piece."
Hi Doug, why wouldn't you try with Talk album? It's filled with some awesome songs.
Can You Imagine off this album is amazing. It’s one of the only songs with Chris Squire singing lead vocals.
I submitted this request for a full album Extended Play Longe. However, I will happily accept this title track. My favorite are: Spirit of Survival, Dreamtime, and In the Presense of. Thanks Doug.
In the presence of is for me in the top 10 of yes songs
Thank you for getting to this interesting album … it’s another sleeper with some fantastic moments, I don’t think it was promoted very much.
The MAGNIFICATION album was their BEST & most brilliant attempt at REDISCOVERING the authentic beauty of past EPIC YES since the 70's.
Great as always
Doug….listen up! Firstly Happy New Year! For your next reaction from this album you might want to consider Give Love Each Day….after listening to your ‘reactions’….(an undervalued label for your educated insights and professional understanding of the music) for several years now I think I know just what rings your bells. The orchestral arrangement in this piece….well I can almost guarantee you will be blown away and you’ll know what I mean as soon as you listen to it. Peace and Love.
Missed this live. It’s not one of theirs I’m all that familiar with ❤
I always thought this album was late flowering. The track were Chris sings (I love his voice) is an old track originally meant for xyz
They actually did an entire symphonic tour. Then, Rick came back.
It's disappointing that this album sold poorly, because to me it sounded like a return to form.
I was lucky to see this tour three times and it was an amazing tour. Very well documented on their Symphonic Live concert DVD.
The rest of the album is great. Sadly released in Sept 2001, so it was overshadowed by major world events. A shame as a few influential industry moguls were predicting great things and awards, etc.
happy holydays!
This album is amazing and didn't get the recognition it deserves because it was released in America on 9-1-1 or the day after. In The Presence Of is a classic!
It's a really good album. "Spirit of Survival" is a gem. So are "Give Love Each Day" and "Dreamtime." Chris sings lead on "Can You Imagine"!
Doug! Great video! You’ve gotta check out some yes that doesn’t feature Jon Anderson! You should try out either Drama (1980) or Fly From Here (2012) which was written with material from the Drama sessions lol.
More Yes Doug!!
Found this CD in a bargain bin, but what I heard became a fine musical experience. It ranks quite high amongst my Yes recordings.
Do in the presence of from their live dvd with the orchestra…. Amazing!!
Great episode. Huge Yes fan. Next please try "In the Presence Of". The live version from Symphonic Yes.
