Beethoven's 9th's finale reflects the final fugue of this mass. The famous ode to joy melody is derived from a repeating figure in another Mozart Mass, k 222. In turn Mozart's entire Requiem is almost a sophisticated extrapolation of Michael Haydn's brilliant Requiem. In fact, one has to wonder if Michael Haydn wasn't a silent contributor to the Sussmayr version. In any case, it's wonderful to see how these artists inspired each other.
Well, it's probable that Michael Haydn wasn't a contributor to the Sussmayr's version, however, the influence of his Requiem is clear: just look at the quam olim abrahae, they are really similar. It is, indeed, amazing how these artists inspired each other.
We're doing the "Gloria" from this for Christmas Eve. I only wish we could as a choir phrase like these choristers though. Love the pulling back on the weak syllables. Very elegant singing!
