I have searched for my unicorns but I could not afford a lot of the prices they wanted. Instead, I went through my stash and fell in love again with what I had. I'm both a process stitcher and I think a collector. I'm working through my collection now stitching what I have. One thing you didn't mention is the " if I don't get it now, will it be out of print later?" Thought process. I now use the " if I stitch this, do I want to pay for framing and do I want it hanging in my home?" That has helped me greatly! I applaud those that are willing and can pay for what they love !

I agree - a lot of these patterns would be fun to stitch but I wouldnt really want them on my walls. The ones I would want, well that's a different story! 💚 Thank you for sharing 💚

I paid $250 for a limited edition, signed/numbered design by Teresa Wentzler called “You were hatched…”. It is one of her dragon designs that is only available on the secondary market. I justified it as a birthday present a couple of years ago.

There were only 1000 of these released, all hand signed and numbered by Teresa Wentzler for the Fantasy Faire market that year. ❤

I am currently stitching Lady of the Flag. I got it from a sweet lady for free. She gave it to me as my sons were both military. My older served 3 tours in Iraq and was military for 14 years. My youngest son is retiring this year after 20 years in the military he has been to Afghanistan 3 tours, S Korea 3 times for a full year each time. This will be his retirement gift. He is very patriotic.
Eventually I will stitch Lady of the Flag again for myself but in the blue color way.
    Thanks for sharing.

The woman who owned/ designed for The Primitive Needle was killed in an auto accident (really tragic). Her family opted (rightfully so) to not continue publishing her charts. Extremely talented, and highly sought-after… I myself have paid a pretty penny for Mirabilia’s “Santa’s Magic”, however, the linen was included (which I gave to my friend, I don’t stitch on linen). I also paid a LOT for Blackbird Designs’ “My Missouri Home” and “America”, and Birds of a Feather’s “All Hallows Night”. Those last 3 were on a Destash page and I did not realize what the Blackbird Charts were going for when I said “me please”. I could have gone back and taken my name off… however, I realize it was an investment in my hobby. No regrets. Nora Corbett and Mirabilia are one and the same. When Nora divorced her husband he got to retain the rights to the name Mirabilia, so she began releasing designs under her own name. She is now back to designing for both companies. The Philanthropic Pumpkin was sold as a kit, was not mass-released, and sold as a fund raiser for Special Olympics (their son participates in the games). However many that were made were all that were sold. This has been FASCINATING!! 💲💰💵💸💸💵💰💲

Do you know who inherited the rights to Nora’s mother’s (Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum aka Lavender & Lace) work? I put in an order for Santa of the Forest to a LNS, and the store owner stated whoever inherited her work is very slow about printing the charts and that it’s an “industry wide problem”. So, my order is “backordered” indefinitely, along with dozens of other people. Can anyone shine light on this?

@@luvslyfe1 I do not know. It may have been Nora and her sister Mary (who is also an artist). I DO know I’ve been able to find several L&L pieces along with Butternut Road and Told in a Garden (all by Marilyn Levitt-Imblum) at my LNS! Destash groups and sites such as Cobweb Corner all carry charts that are sometimes hard to get. I also put it out there on those groups if I’m searching for a chart, as there ARE cross stitchers out there that love to help out with Unicorn charts by either selling outright or lending. Hope this helps!! I had replied to your question before, however, I no longer see my response!! 😕🤔🤔

For those who are looking to add cross-stitch patterns to their stash, I have found hundreds of them over the years at a local charity thrift store. I do see some at the national chain thrift stores, such as Goodwill, but by far the biggest selection comes from the private, small thrift stores in my area. I even find complete cross-stitch kits, kits for crewel, printed quilt blocks, vintage iron-on embroidery designs, soft-doll making patterns and other needlework items - for very little money. Most patterns are no more than $1 apiece, but I think I have seen some complete kits for up to $10.

Awesome video. I have stitched lady of the flag and it’s HUGE! And gorgeous. Took me 6 months of monogamous stitching to complete. I sold my chart several years ago and I think it was around $100 then. I got to go to market once in 2003 which was awesome. I sold a lot of stash over the years but lost alot of what I had left to hurricane Michael in 2018 which destroyed my house. Thankfully LOTF was saved without any damage, we are safe and rebuilt. And all is good. 😊

I heard about this video when it was mentioned by the Hathaway Stitchers. I have recently returned to cross stitch after a number of years. I previously worked in a sewing shop where the only place to buy charts and kits was from a shop or a craft show. Imagine my surprise when this time around I discovered Flosstube, and the facility to buy and download patterns off Etsy instantaneously. I have spent a small fortune. However it was doubly ironic as I was looking at some Mirabilia patterns deciding what to send to charity. I have both Christmas Elegance and Lady of the flag, as well as Sleeping Beauty and a stone statue. They certainly look more attractive to me now.

I was desperate to get Blackbird’s Octopus’ Garden. I tracked it on Ebay for over 8 months. It ranged from $40 -$80. Then all of a sudden it dropped to $14! I jumped on it thinking I got such a great deal. A few days later I discovered that it had been re-released. I’m glad I waited. It was selling on 123 Stitch for $9.

💲💲I did lots of complex Eva Rosenstadt kits in my youth. I can't believe the prices some of these simple designs fetch. I could just look at many of them and stitch them up. I have a booklet with samples of all DMC flosses, so even color matching would be a breeze. My grandmother was that way with crochet. I could show her a picture and she would make it for me.

Did sell this before 1884 had it, for $45 so some Monies were recovered. Btw I’ve yet to stitch it😂. Peaceful Paradise is listed available at The Attic in Mesa, AZ. Fun listing you put together👏👏

Thank you both for a fascinating Flosstube. I definitely don't think I'd pay lots for a chart when there are so many beautiful patterns out there, but never say never! My most expensive chart is a recent purchase, 'A Unicorn, a Peacock, A Badger' which is going to be my birthday start if it arrives in the UK in time. It cost $32.89 from 123Stitch. I think it will take a long time to stitch this beautiful full coverage piece so I think it's worth it, and I love the fact it's based on an antique piece. $12 is the highest I have spent on a pattern. I liked the center square (witches over the cauldron) from the Halloween at Hawkrun Hallow. But seeing as how that was the only part that I really liked I couldn’t justify to myself paying $37 for just that portion. It’s a huge pattern, if I loved the whole thing I would have paid it. But not just for one square.

I have just come back to Crosstitch after a 20 year hiatus. This was fascinating! I do not like samplers, and I am halfway through the video, so I probably would not have paid any dollars for these patterns. I am really liking the newer designs From Cherry Hill stitchery that you can get done fairly quickly. When I downsized to my current condo I got rid of a lot of old crust stitch pamphlets. I am really kicking myself that I got rid of some shepherds bush books! One of them dated back to the 1990s and the designs would still be perfectly applicable today! Kick myself, kick myself, kick myself. And just to show you how cheap I am, I recently purchased on Amazon, an old Jeremiah Junction, booklet of log cabin designs. Seven dollars with tax! 😂❤

Oh my gosh!!! I am definitely more Allison than Stephanie hehe. This was a wild ride. I don't know if I'm weird (I mean I am! ) but I don't have any 'unicorns', I don't massively get the FOMO of it all, but I totally get that if you HAVE to have something you have to have it. I couldn't justify any of those from my budget - though I loved the idea of if you wanted one desperately, save up from the patterns you'd buy separately and do it that way.
This was so much fun to watch and super labour intensive so fantastic job ladies! Allison's face at times was just so hilarious and I was exactly the same...!

The most I have paid for some patterns: $113.68 (price with shipping) for my unicorn of Teresa Wentzler's You Were Hatched. This was a limited edition design of only 1000 copies that she signed. I paid $80 for a Bendy Stitchy Auction for charity for Brenda Gervais Birds of a Feather. I paid $50 for a Primitive Needle Halloween Game Board and $25 each for a few Prairie Moon charts. I would love to get the Primitive Needle Witches Hollow to stitch - that is my new Unicorn!

Scarcity drives demand! I’ve seen where Mirabilia patterns have gone OOP and there’s a rush for her other patterns “just in case”. They’re missing sales on the one pattern, but driving sales on the others. Would demand be as high on the OOP pattern if it was still in print? Or is exclusivity part of the allure…

The most I ever paid for a pattern was $65-70 dollars. It is Dimensions / The Gold Collection's "Soft Sounds of the Orient." It was designed by James Himsworth - one of my favorite designers for Dimensions. The most expensive kit I own is Chatelaine's "Serengeti Mandala." I ordered it at the tail end of the pandemic, and waited over a year to receive the kit and all the floss, but it was so well worth the wait. All said and done; pattern, floss, making working copies of the chart, the fabric - the whole package cost me in excess of $400-600.00. I will never tell my family about this one!!

I would love to find someone who wants to stitch it to gift it to after the fact. :) I recognize that lots of patterns are expensive and hard to find, but I don't think I could sell the pattern for a ton of money when I know that there are people that just really want to stitch it. I am willing to dish out if it's a unicorn pattern, though I could never spend more than $40 on a pattern, I think. It's too hard to justify in my mind. 💲
