How many let go before coming to the surface?
Depends on the month. early on probably half of them. then in Summer/Fall only a few let go on each run. The smaller they are- the quicker they are to let go

@tlpoutdoorsman I'm not a commercial waterman, but I think in Maryland, you're only allowed crab pots in the Chesapeake Bay. If fishing rivers that feed the bay you can only run trotlines. I believe this is the case.
Probably not many. Crabs are greedy, and will hold on right to the top if it is not too bright out. Trot lining is an age old method for one reason, because it works. If it didn't, nobody would do it. It is a pain in the hind parts until you get it down. They make it look easier than it is.
@@kennethphilips3226 I believe a recreation crabber can still use the larger pots but you need a big boat to use a lot of them so most people just have them at their dock where they can check on a couple each day. You can have a total of 1200 foot of trot line and thirty drop traps when recreation crabbing but I have only seen the Outdoors Maryland team doing both at the same time. You can stack the open top drop traps inside each other like nesting eggs to store in a lot less space.

@@JennaDorsey69 80$! nice net but the cost of these things kills me. I made a couple myself out of heavy chicken wire that work pretty well so I encourage folks to build their own if their strapped like me.
