    My old guitar teacher told me to practice in front of the TV (or I guess internet these days) preferably a comedy. Frustration doesn't get in the way because you're laughing at the show. Ego is distracted and busy so the fingers just kind of learn it with less monkey mind in the way. I definitely started getting better when I tried this. Let your fingers learn without the judgement getting in the way and they will get used to the patterns. You can focus more on details like expression more mindfully later but this is a good way to just get your fingers comfortable with a new technique or scale or chord or piece and get relaxed with playing it. Or to build speed running through some things you already know.

      If you’re aiming to build dexterity yes, this is great. Yet, developing anything related to a sense of musicality, actually playing and learning music, requires full mindful investment.

      @@seanclarke8255 In my case the musicality was innate and the chops came hard. This tactic got me over the hurdle.

    I play mandolin and what actually got me to get better on an insane scane is crossing my country(canada) busking
    Putting yourself in a position where you have no choice but to play for cash gas and grass as its legal here(altered states are relevant as long as you dont find yourself by default in an altered state on the daily hance why relying on donations for that creates a different relation to it)
    Making it so you practice in a variety of spaces with sights sometimes out of this world for a variety of people sometimes whod rather not acknowledge you. All that focuses you on why youre there in the first place.
    Ive busked in every major city in the country just by reason of the lifestyle. It pays for my gas my food and my dogs food, my truck insurance.
    Obvs not all setup are equal
    But theres lessons to learn from being impose playing for so long on the daily.
    Especially since youll end up getting bored of your music often and you have to push through and figure out new things

    When I pratice a really difficult part, I start slow and speed it up, together with the music. Once it works in the real tempo for the first time, I'm usually shout out a totally delighted "Fuck yes!" ... the dopamine spike is real!

      Most of us practice what we can carve out time for. If you're like most people and have to work for a living, then you're rarely going to have the luxury of practicing anything so thoroughly that it gets to the point where you can't do it wrong unless you're talking about a few years out.

    Great video Rotem .Also, a great way to learn faster is to do it even for short periods of time but repeated throughout the day. Taking breaks between practising exercises and reinforcing that memory helps the brain lock it down.

    Great advice Rotem. I’m guilty of playing lines rote fashion, my theory is good but I don’t spend the bit of time necessary to dissect and better understand what’s going on but, following your video, I’m gonna give it priority and make the time. Same goes for ‘singing’ and trying to write a song. Thanks Rotem

    I have WAY more than 10.000 hours under my fingers, playing almost every day for over 25 years. But since I am self-taught and nobody showed me how and what to practice, not much progress has been made in the past 20 years, and I still make sure that the door to my room is closed, before I start... well... "playing", I guess.
    Edit: If you're on a time budget - make changes to your life, not to your practice routine. If you don't find 2 hours a day to do things you like, you're doing it fundamentally wrong.

    Biggest Problem i have is the missing company - im surrounded by potsmoking „Singers and Songwriters“ who actually have kind of a good voice but no intention of learning a bit of music theory to get connected.
    Im kind of the only person at the moment who is trying to become a good rythm guitarist selftought without any other Instrumentalist 😒
    I just can’t tell how important a little bit of basic theory is to get connected with other musicians. Just stop chilling and put a little effort in your knowledge and skill - the reward and progress you will get from that will be much more beneficial than any trip you will have from drugs. Just try it

    Dopamine absolutely critical for locking it in as you say. And the more you do it, the more your body anticipates it and the more chemical motivation you’ll have!
    Another thing I’ve been trying to incorporate is something that’s been growing in the flexibility community. Turns out that you can learn really well if you split things into reps and sets.
    I don’t know if this is transferable to guitar, but I think it’s worth seeing if it translates :)

    • @RotemSivanGuitar
      @RotemSivanGuitar  10 місяців тому

      Love it man. Yea, how short do you do the reps / sets?

    • @Kevin.odonnell
      @Kevin.odonnell 10 місяців тому

      @@RotemSivanGuitar I think like you could split it up based on what you’re trying to accomplish. Speed, endurance, general coordination, etc. but I would say that you go through and do a slow controlled warm up set at like 50% of max effort in any of those categories as a warm up. Take a minute and rest. Then a few sets of like 10 really good reps on a short section or exercise. Probably 3-4 sets. Obviously you’d increase whichever intensity factor along the way.
      I use this idea for my hands and breaking through my neuromuscular issues and it helps save me time to think this way. Also it programs in a relax time between sets and reps. I think that makes the muscles less tense.
      Your mileage may vary but I can tell by now you’ve got it covered with figuring shit out with permutations and tweaks :)
