  • Deep sea explorers found the USS Hornet in the South Pacific earlier this year. CBS News was onboard the research ship when robot submaries discovered the wreck. Now, we are learning the USS Hornet was not the only World War II aircraft carrier located on that expedition. Mark Phillips reports.

The Wasp was a poorly designed ship, but her men fought bravely, and she gave everything she had.

Wasp was built to a scaled-down Yorktown design, but it was up against tonnage limits set by the London Naval Treaty.

Probably expertly designed to give the U.S. Navy the best ship possible within the very strict limitations. It went in harm’s way for a long time in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean where the carriers Ark Royal (of 1941 Bismarck fame) and Eagle were sunk by submarines by 1942.

My Grandpa was a survivor of the Wasp. I have a picture of it sinking and being torpedoed, which is etched on to his tombstone as well. His name was GM² (Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer) Summerville. He got knocked in the head by a deck gun and his buddy helped him to come to in time to abandon ship. I ended up serving aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and my Grandpa was always my Naval hero.

I did not just mention the USS Gambier Bay. it sank not just in deep water. such as USS Bismark Sea, USS Black Island, USS Sent Lo (for example), but in region fillipine trench
According to historical data USS Gambier Bay was sunk by about 11°46′N 126°09′E . The deep ocean in this pleace about 23000 Futs.
If USS gambier Bay, USS Johnston, USS Hoel, USS Samuel B. Roberts, and japanece cruisers Chikuma, Chōkai, Suzuya are found, this will be a real breakthrough in the field of history.

Accordin to Edwyn Hoyt who wrote"Guadalcanal"the I-19 commanded by capt.Kinashi made the most difficult operation a sub commander can do: A six torpedo salvo, expecting if the coveted targed was missed the torpedoes could hit another target. They hit three:USS Wasp,USS North Carolina and the USS O'Brien. The latter got hit but didn't sink in the moment but when It was steaming to Noumea.

My late father who was a career Navy Chief (another 30 year man) spoke about an individual he sailed with in the 1950’s who had been on board the USS LEXINGTON, USS YORKTOWN, and USS WASP, when they were sunk in WW2. Said the standing joke was “OH NO! THIS GUY’S ON BOARD! THE SHIP’S GONNA SINK!”

    • @xnato-uq1tn
      @xnato-uq1tn 5 років тому +1

Surprised they sent this guy to sea and that the crew accepted his presence. I know for a fact that any number of old CPOs and salty sailors made warding signs every time they had contact with this sailor. And have no doubt that the entire crew knew the scuttlebutt damned fast.

Great uncle Jake Jacob schuch was transferred from the uss Arizona to the north african theater as a native German speaker he could help decipher German radio transmissions on December 6th 1941 just hours before the Arizona was destroyed at Pearl Harbor within months he was transferred to the USS Wasp it was on board when she was sunk out from under him. You never lived to see her found he died in the 1980s and was buried at Sea my grandfather and my father off the coast of California Grandma Tina never let him live down the fact is that for a year-and-a-half she's already had died on the Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attack because he wasn't allowed to contact any of his family let me know he has survived and is not been on board the Arizona when the attack happened which is why he contacted her as soon as possible let her know he is survived the sinking of the wasp you never forgot either ship or the friends he lost on both of them.

He was a fireman 3rd class in "M" division. I have his purple heart and other papers the Navy sent to my grandmother. I have 2 letters he wrote to my dad, last one dated August 9th 1942. Dad's brother Kenneth was on the USS MONTEREY CVL-26. His brother John was on the USS ARKANSAS BB-33. Dad was Army Air-Corps and US Air Force, Europe and Korea wars. In a span of just over 5 months we lost 4 Fleet Carriers:
    USS Lexington (CV-2) - 8 May 1942
    USS Yorktown (CV-5) - 7 June 1942
    USS Wasp (CV-7) - 15 September 1942
    USS Hornet (CV-8) - 26 October 1942
While we would lose another 9 carriers, one in the Atlantic, none were Fleet Carriers. One of these was the U.S.'s first carrier, USS Langley (CV-1).

In my previous post I forgot to mention that USS Wasp, CV7 had insufficient engine power. Her turbines were too small to move her at fleet carrier task force speeds, as I recall her best flank speed was 26 to 27 kts although she was rated at 30 kts. But this was accomplished at a cost, her machinery was chronically over worked, during her war life she had to go into dry dock to have her engine turbines overhauled, twice as I recall. Then she was killed. At least she died with her flag flying, not demolished for scrap like they did to the USS Enterprise, CV 6.

@TheSlot1942 Halsey wasn't in the dog house for the Typhoons. They couldn't predict weather like they can now. He was , however, chastised for the battle of Leyte Gulf. He failed to detach a section of his battle fleet to cover the IJN Center force approach at the Samar strait when he took the bait and charged after the IJN carrier group which he destroyed. It almost became a disaster.

Yes,Wasp was the duty carrier that day while Saratoga was offshore refueling and resupplying.Wasp was providing air support for the marines on Guadalcanal.Luckily most of her air group was in the air at the time of the attack.Wasp was not built with WW2 in mind so to speak even though everyone in the Navy knew it was coming. They knew she was unarmored and weak but they had no choice and sent her to the very Dangerous Med. where the Germans controlled the air and then to the Pacific.Ranger went too and tore the Vichy French and Germans a new one.My Dad was on the Yorktown CV5 and this was a huge gamble for the Navy the could not afford to ignore. The early carriers including Sara ,Lex and Langley all held the line in a very Dangerous world where none of them belonged but that's why they were built.Langley was by this time a seaplane tender but she went to Java anyway.Ranger Taught most of the Navy to fly.Yorktown was baldy damaged at Coral Sea and Watched Lexington explode and burn while they fought to save themselves.Hornet was pounded into a burning wreck and refused to die.Enterprise was badly damaged and alone for awhile on her own.I encourage all of you to read up on our early Carriers. Its high adventure on the best Moral plain ever.

I recently read that USS Wasp, CV7 was a poorly designed ship, that she was the bock beer carrier of the Washington Naval Treaty, the tonnage left over from what was allowed for in the treaty. Not quite big enough, with fuel tanks and magazines that lacked sufficient armor protection located directly under the island. The water main could be disabled by one good break, DC capacity was insufficient. And the boiler rooms and fire rooms were joined, a single hit killed both. No power, your ship will die. I believe this is correct. Please correct me, Wasp was a fine ship, a proud member of the USN. She and her crew gave their all, succumbing in battle, they deserve the honor of being remembered factually.

Small items, perhaps the ship's bell may be recovered for historical display purposes but no other disturbance is allowed. And the various navies do not take kindly to poachers.

Well I had read that the people that found Titanic weren't really looking for her, rather they were looking for Russian submarines or something and they used Titanic as like the cover...and once they found the sub they were then allowed to look for Titanic

To preserve history and find out what happened to the ships lost in WWII. Many of them are grave sites, like the USS Juneau they found a while back. Was lost with all but around 10 crew out of 700, including the 5 Sullivan Brothers

Why would you say that? Shame on you. That is a war grave and it is the obligation of the United States and the military to find and identify the remains of all of our fallen soldiers and sailors.
