How to replace a 2015 Buick Verano cabin air filter

- Here's my very unprofessionally recorded and edited tutorial video showing how to change your cabin air filter in a 2015 Buick Verano (or Chevy Cruze).
Please forgive the bad audio and video quality, as I shot the video with my phone in one hand, and tools doing the work in the other. Also, I'm not a mechanic, so please excuse my weak verbiage.
Camera: Google Pixel 3 XL
A couple of people have mentioned in the comments, but I would like to take the time to emphasize: any time you have any concern of electrical danger while working on your vehicle, you should disconnect the negative wire from your battery terminal BEFORE any following steps are taken. This tutorial requires you to remove and set aside (but not disconnect) the airbag from beneath the glovebox. While this will not inherently cause the airbag to deploy, the risk is far less if your battery is disconnected.
😅
My passenger side airbag is off/ disabled. Not sure if that's because I ride solo or it was never engaged. I've never had to remove airbags in the past so thinking there must be a way around this. GM seems to have made this model quite difficult for owners to perform routine maintenence. My battery was a bear to get off but every piece is crucial and necessary for vehicle operation.
Your video is a godsend for those of us with a Buick (Opel) Cascada - same procedure.
Great video and info. Shame on Buick for not making a cut out on the back of the glove box like every other car manufacturer. Guess the glove box team didn't work well with the cabin air filter team at the design table.
This is definitely example of German over engineering This car was originally an opal My mom has another Buick It's real easy in the glove box and my older Buick was very easy also This car is ridiculous
I've been putting off replacing mine. When I turn on the AC is smells horrible. Thanks for the step by step instructions. This really looks like another fine example of the engineers hating on the mechanics that have to maintain the vehicle.
Thank you so much for making the time to create this video and show the rest of us! Going to be changing the filter myself thanks to you ☺️
Glad it was helpful!
My cabin filter also reeks when I use the AC, had no idea how to change it until I found your video, THANKS. SCREW THE SHOP!
Thanks, I needed that instead of paying 100 for labor.
Dude...remove the music from this video. It is totally distracting. If the music was gone, it would be super awesome. Not so much with it included. It prevents a person from hearing what you are saying, and it adds no value to the video.
Your video was very helpful, thanks. Now the start up won't stink.
Thank you for the video. I did it myself. I went to a shop that told me it didn’t have a cabin air filter.... 🙄 I would like to add that the cabin air filter has an arrow on it. Just make sure the arrow on the new filter is in the same position as the old one.
A number 7 mm?
if anybody out there is worried about jostling the airbag and having it go off on you, just disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and wait 10 minutes for residual power to disperse.
Thank you
Just did the filter on a 2015 Verano and all I had to do was remove the trim piece and the 4 bolts around the glove box. The glove box assembly just popped right out. Took 2 minutes flat. Absolutely zero need to touch the lower airbag. Where did you get the idea to do that?
The video is very helpful. This is the same procedure for the 2016 Buick Cascada.
Well it certainly isn't difficult but having all the right tools is the fun part, especially if you don't have a very well equipped garage.
why does the air bag have to be removed when on another video a guy is changing the cabin filter on a buick regal of the same year and he only had ro remove the glove box , and side panel and disconnect the light on the glove box,...pull it out and get the air filter? no removal of the air bag involved?........
Thanks for the comment! It may be because the Regal has the knee-airbag in a different spot, or it's held by different screws. I always recommend checking the owner's manual to verify the proper procedure.
Thanks so much. Followed your instructions and it was a breeze. Your AWESOME !!!
Great job, Aaron. This was extremely helpful.
Damn Buick something that's should be simple ...
Q: Do these steps/ instructions apply to all Buick Verano makes and models? I have a 2016 so I'd think it'd be the same but I wasn't counting on my power steering being all electric and whatdoyaknow! 🤷🏻♂️ 😂
Thank u for the video is very easily to understand it and I’m going to try it. Wish me luck. Thx again.
What did you do to make sure the airbag didn't deploy during the entire process? I need to change mine badly but I'm scared that I'll somehow be THAT person where my airbag will go off. Thanks for posting this by the way! 🙌🏽
Thanks for the comment!
The thing is, I don't know that the thing I called an "airbag" is actually an airbag. I clarified that in a footnote during the video. It may be an airbag, or it may be something less crucial. I don't recommend you perform this replacement if you're not confident in yourself, but I know that it was not a very difficult task to remove that component.
unplug your battery terminal this might help
Thank you so much for sharing this video.
Does this work on a Buick Verano Sport touring? Or should I go in under the hood not glovebox.
Hi! Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to that question. I'm not certified through any auto dealer or garage. I just needed to change it on my own vehicle and thought I'd record the "how-to."
And I thought removing the computer to get to the battery on my Equinox was dumb. I mean it is but at least it’s fairly easy to do.
Great video man
Thanks man! You ROCK👍🤜🤛🏻
I hope this works for my 2013 base version
The camera is too close , great video
Thank you
Great video!!! I jus replaced mine thanx to you.
Your video is great! My husband followed your instructions and everything went great! He appreciated your guidance concerning the airbag and the battery. Thank you very much!
thanks, man...really helpful!
I own a Buick Verona, and this is one of the shittiest designs I've ever owned, the cabin air filter is just one example.
John Spence A 2015 Verano is my first car I ever bought and I have to agree it's one of the worst cars I've ever driven. My transmission has been repaired 3 times, my coolant system doesn't really work, and to work on the car is beyond difficult. I can't wait to get rid of it.
They do this so you get it done at the dealer.
Wow 👏great I will try tomorrow
Well done man!
Great video, but not your fault, but GM could of made it WAY easier. Changed them in my other cars without removing any bolts, very easy. This how ever, not rocket science, but engineered harder then it should of been. Should of just been flip down glove box open door install, just like a lot of cars.
Thanks. Super easy!!!
did replacing the filter work for you? I replaced my daughters and the cabin still stinks.... I cannot find any interior water leaks, mystery to me.
You know what man, I'm still smelling something similar to the horrible smell before, but it is far less intense than it was. I was thinking it could just be a lingering because if how long it went without having the filter replaced. I'm going to have my wife do a thorough cleaning and see if that works.
Mark Cartozzo I was told the gutter from the sunroof leaks. I have the same smell. Only complaint I have with car. Dealer cannot find leak so I have to get real good at replacing this filter I guess
I found out there was water in my door and there was plug my husband took off which was at the bottom and it came pouring out. No idea how long the water was there
Try spraying lysol disinfectant into the intake of the cabin air filter which will be done from the outside by the bottom of the windshield. Spray both the driver side and passenger side. Turn your ac on, blower on high, make sure it's NOT set on the recirculating air. Lower all your windows and spray half on one side and half on the other. Kills any mold that might be growing and causing the smell.
What a stupid design.
So stupid that automakers make something like this difficult. Taking out an airbag to change out a cabin air filter?!? It literally takes 30 seconds to change one on a Honda Civic. Don’t get me started about the oil filter. Thanks for the video! It was needed!
hondas are like plug and play. good engineering.
Right about this air filter but I have a Buick verano The oil filter is real easy
I have Honda accord and took me exactly 1 min. No tools needed
Great work
I really appreciate this instructional video. I'm not mechanically inclined but you did a great job of laying out the step-by-step process and I was able to get the job done. This was probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my whole life, I'm a big guy, and I heeded your warning, but I was super proud of myself when the job was completed. Thank you so much. I am grateful for your instruction and for the UA-cam platform that made it possible.
Excellent thank you! Pep boys charges 121.50 including discount purchased the stp 1872 air filter for 19.99 at auto zone!
I suppose it was out of the question to make a trap door in the back of the box from the factory 🤦
For whatever reason, I needed to use a T15 star bit (instead of T10) for a 2012 Verano. Otherwise, this video is awesome and better than the others. Thanks!
I appreciate that very much! I'm not a videographer, and my voice is not as nice as ChrisFix, but I just didn't want anyone else wasting money on a dealer job that could be done at home with basic hand tools.
Sorry about the mixup with the star bit. I literally have no experience with any Verano other than my own.
@@AaronCano1 I also like Scotty Kilmer he's an OG but a master mechanic who knows his way around any engine. Saves me so much and avoid being taken for a ride! I'll check out ChrisFix too 👍🏻
T15 needed on the 2015 as well (3 Torx screws on airbag).
Wow what a pain in the ass this is.... ugh. I need to do it cause mine reeks...
I have a Subaru and bought my girlfriend a filter for her car because it smells like vomit. All I have to do it pull a piece take the glovebox out and pull the filter out. This is unnecessary and shouldn't take this many tools, specific tools. Wtf why would someone buy this car
1st thing you do is get rid of that background music! Distracting!
Fucking GM should be fined for making anyone take out airbags and glove compartments just to replace a cabin air filter like that! You did a great job bro, but damn, that's some fucked up engineering! I have a 2014 Cobalt and I'm about to take a long trip so I was looking at what was involved and now I think I need to request an extra 3 days off just to get my car ready for the trip! I used to have a 2005 Cobalt, it was real easy, just loosen the hinges on the glove compartment and switch it out in under a minute!
Thank you to replace that is 70 dollars you saved me big time
Caution! Before removing the air bag bolts, unhook the battery. Also, face the plastic side towards you not the metal side. If the air bag deployed with the metal side towards you you will be seriously injured or kilt!
Thank you so much, for doing this video! I watched it, step by step, and was able to get my cabin air filter replaced in my 2013 Buick Verano. 👍👍
Thank you much. I have a 2016 Verano. Your instructions were spot on. Thanks again.
Thank you very much Aaron. I really appreciate the information youve provided. Why they make these simple tasks so difficult, is beyond me.
Erin I wanted to thank you for showing how to change my cabin filter for my 2016 Buick Verano. Your a really good teacher I hope you continue to make while explained videos.
Darlene Archuleta
Those torx are not t10 on my 2013 but rather t15. Possibly academic for me. I did remove them. Then I found the 3 clips that they screw into on the floor. The shop that did it first time didn't look up the procedure. Never removed the air bag. He removed the 4 7mm head bolts and just yanked the box until he broke the plastic off that those clips mounted onto.
Hey, man. FYI...I just tried looking at another video of the same, but the music on that video was so loud, I couldn't focus enough to READ its instructions. At least your mutes a little while you voice the instructions, so I have now changed my mind about your video. I would still recommend you losing the music, as most people are going to want to focus on your instruction, and the music takes away from that. Thanks for at least explaining things in a way they are clear and make sense. Subscribed and liked, bro!
Thank you so much I just bought a 2013 Buick Verano and I needed to change the cabin air filter and I’m a complete idiot your a savior
as a mechanic, this was excruciating.
Do we have play that music while we do it
I tried without the music, but couldn't get things to work...
You the best
Hello, first thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have a friend that mentioned having to remove all the items like you've shown here, to replace the cabin air filter in his Buick. I found the video below that shows only having to remove the glove box cover. Is there a difference between vehicles requiring the removal of all the other components?
ua-cam.com/video/Z-c2qmb_dkA/v-deo.htmlsi=ockHlBYo9KUlvtNf
Garage I took mine to didn't drop the air bag so when he still couldn't get the plastic housing off he worked it until he broke the fasteners that were behind air bag.
Thanks! If you could, please next time make voice and music volume the same.
Best video I have seen on this. I have a 2016 Buick Cascada convertible and it was exactly as your video. Thanks
Your video is very informative but I can't seem to get my glove box to fall down and pop out like yours even after I took all the bolts out Is there something I missed or do you just pull it and it has tabs that release
Wow GM is trash. This is too much work for a cabin air filter. Lol.
Thank you for the video.
This is actually insane, welp I got some tools to buy and then I'll be on this struggle bus lmfao, the things we do for family I swear
Hoooooly SHIT this is so unnecessarily complicated to do lol not looking forward to this 🙂
Your video is very much appreciated. I wouldn’t have any idea where to start and would have just given up. Thanks again
Thanks for sharing this will really help😊 you did a very good job 👍
Don't need your life story and all the other stuff. Straight to the point is ok.
You're video was on point! Can't thank you enough. I changed out my cabin filter and every detail on your video was accurate to the task. Well done!
Thanks a lot bro 👍👍👍
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you. Works for 2016 too
Very straight forward video thank you 🍻
Great video and information. Thanks 👍.
you dont need to touch the airbag
the glove box will come out without touching it .dont take it off
I did this and now my airbag light on how can I reset it?
@@mzzquita try to take the positive terminal off for few minutes this might reset it if you dont have a problem
I have a Cascada and this procedure is spot on. I did have to take off the airbag to access the 3 screws he mentions having to remove. I didn't want to touch the airbag but the three screws thread into the glovebox. I couldn't remove the glovebox without taking these out. You don't need to unplug the airbag. It will sit off to the side while you work on everything else.
@@prescher13 I agree. When I pulled out the glovebox after removing the 10mm nuts, the 3 torx screws, and then the 7mm bolts, I found that someone (presumably a careless/ignorant tech at the Buick dealer where this was purchased as a certified used vehicle!) apparently failed to do that. It was clear that the glovebox assembly had been yanked out after removing only the four 7mm bolts. The 3 plastic flanges at the base of the box that hold the clip nuts for the torx screws were completely broken off the base of the glovebox assembly. On top of that, the damper on the right side of the box was broken off from its attachment point. Luckily, that's only an $11 part on eBay, and I think the glovebox assembly is held in adequately by the four 7mm bolts.
I'm glad it's held in adequately. If anything, (probably) the worst that could happen would be an annoying vibration sound at higher speeds.
Thanks very helpful.😊
Remember you always disable the airbag and disconnect the battery for safety
So my AC isnt blowing at all, it will blow once in awhile, and it is cold. Could this be a cabin air filter issue
Hmm. I'm not a mechanic, but that doesn't seem like an air filter issue. It could be something in the climate control switches, possibly even a loose connection somewhere in the a/c circuit itself. Hope this helps!
Good job thanks
Saved me money thanks!
It's a t15...
My wife has a 2016 Buick Cascada and your video got me through it! Thanks for making the video.
Thank you brother!
This is by far the best video on this topic (even 4 years later). I have had to refer to this a couple times. Surprisingly, the Regal from the same year as my Verano (2015) takes half the time and is easily half as complex.
Notes:
- Always disconnect the battery (negative cable); You may have to run through the window down/window up security routine afterwards but much better than eating an airbag while you are bent over backwards under the dash
- Long socket extensions are really helpful for the 7 mm glove box hex head screws
- Find the deepest 10 mm socket you have for the two airbag nuts
- Depending on your build or VIN, you may need T15 Torx screwdriver for the screws under the glove box (vs. T20)
@bammerbiff1621 wished I had read your comment before doing it. I did remove negative cable. Got the window message. Was hoping it was security. Google showed it was low voltage issue but people had it as ongoing issue. I checked battery voltage and it was 12.15 after starting and few minutes running. Running shows it's charging at 14.6. I put the charger on it for a bit and will check in the morning. My policy is to replace battery every 4-5 years. Checking records this one is 7 years.
This video is spot on !!! Pack your patience because it's not a quick fix. My 2020 Kia Forte cabin filter took less than 5 min. to change. Your detailed explanation couldn't have been better. Great job and thank you. The color of my wife filter, I could have sent it to Guinness Book Of World Records as the dirtiest filter ever 😁
You didn't show how to remove the glove compartment
I think you may have missed 3:50 - 6:15.
Great video! Short and to the point. But when removing the air bag make sure to not have the back facing you, on the slim chance it does explode it will fire toward you.
Great video Excellent information and step-by-step process. However I haven't done that many Maneuvers with my body since grade 5 gym class.
I don't know why this showed up as second in the search results. The first one was just a guy with a slide show on his computer.
I just did mine...this was purposely made so that it could only be serviced at the the dealer...at least 1 to 1.5 hours if you have the right tools...
Aaron Thanks for the video. I was wondering about the air bag deployment, but as you mentioned disconnect the battery.
I have everything but the tea😔
I've heard of people having success without tea, on rare occasion. You might get lucky!
Thanks Aaron, you save my time and stress of doing myself. I will definitely go to the mechanic handling this "Not that difficult" job 😍
Probably would be a good idea to properly disconnect the battery terminals when doing this since there are sensitive electronic parts like airbags involved.
Aaron, thanks a million. I had a similar experience with my girlfriend's 2014 Buick Verano. She took it to Canadian Tire in Quebec to have the cabin air filter replaced and they said, "sure thing!" After fiddling around with it for 10 minutes they buttoned it back up and gave it back to her with the old cabin filter intact and said they couldn't do it because it was too complicated. So I now have the daunting task of being a hero amid a flock of goats. Your video will help me avoid being another "goat".
When my mechanic replaced mine he didn't drop air bag. I think he proceeded to break plastic off the 3 bolts that he never removed by brute force when he removed the box.
@@gadasavideos8564 yeah I figured there's probably a way around it but removing the bag avoids safety issues. When the time comes I'll be working below that compartment and terminals will be disconnected.
Thank you ..very much for this video dealer was charging me $187..glad i came across ur video...thanks
