  • At the southwest corner of the Camas Prairie, White Bird is near the Salmon River crossing point for the Lewis and Clark expedition. It is also the location of the 1877 Battle of White Bird Canyon, which was the first fight of the Nez Perce War and a significant defeat of the U.S. Army. Chief White Bird was a leader of the tribe. The summit of White Bird Hill is 2,700 feet (820 m) above the city, ascended via U.S. Highway 95. White Bird was established 127 years ago in 1891 and was named for the Nez Perce chief.

If you had driven about 1/2 mile further through town you would have come to the historic Nez Perce/U.S. Army Battle site. I asked a fellow who ran a store in town how to get there. He said there were interpretive signs at the site last time his was out that way. BUT he had not been out that side of town IN YEARS! Thanks for the video :)

Thank you for this. I spent two years in the Air Force in Idaho and we took a drive up into the hills one weekend for the heck of it. I have have pics taken with my 110 camera of Whitebird. I'll never forget that beautiful image. One day I'll go back again. Just for the heck of it.
