as much as I want him to stay, I can understand how performing this album is hard for Isaac. In every performance of Basketball Shoes I've seen, Isaac is on the verge of tears screaming the last lyrics. It's incredibly powerful, but I can see how that displaying that level of vulnerability to a larger audience than ever can be very hard on his mental health. Sad to see him go but I respect his decision :c
i think afut was a huge catharsis for him which also left a huge gap in his life. I think that's why he left the band. I mean imagine having to keep performing songs that remind of your lowest point in life. I understand him completely.
i just hope in 9 years or so they do an anniversary tour of ants from up there and isaac is in the right mental state to perform it

I'm a new fan that just found out about BCNR after Ants From Up There came out. It's incredible they have been putting out this quality of music from the get go. Very cool that they had this masterpiece in the oven for 4+ years. Sad it took me this long to find out but still glad I'm here.
This is always what I'm thinking, I find a song and fucking love it, hail it as a masterpiece and find out it came out years ago, which begs the question, how many songs haven't we heard that are fuckin amazing???

@@domjondomjon lots of lyric changes but that would be it. Instrumentally it’s pretty much the same or even better. We’ll just need to get used to the definitive version, same as most of us did with Athens, France/Sunglasses.
I’ve literally seen this so many times, I can’t get over how perfect this performance is. Everything about it is perfect, from the people talking, the filming and obviously the music. I really wish to see them live at least once.

he really wrote a whole ass song about a wet dream he had of charli xcx, and then reworked it into one of the best songs ever made
This is such an incredible composition. I'm so sad they didn't get to have their breakout year this year, but I'll be waiting for them when they're able to come back.
cool contrast to the studio version, both versions go hard, would've been interesting to see a polished version of basketball shoes with these lyrics but ah well the band now is still sick.
Dawg idk how I didn’t realize this the first like thousand times I watched this but I think the final like VERY final chorus at like 13:10 is completely improvised by Isaac. After the beautiful noisy wall he looks up at everyone and hits the massive low D chord and starts singing again, and everyone else looks at him like “oh shit we’re goin again?” Like Charlie’s drums even take a second to get in the tempo again bc he wasn’t expecting it, but they still all come back in to make it again and it sounds so so so beautiful. Isaac actually talked about this exact performance with Britt Walford in some interview. I remember him saying that he doesn't like this last bit and actually finds it a little bit emberrasing. look up ninja tune podcast with bcnr. they're talking about it at around 46:14 if anyone's interested.
@@conjointoates also like the very BC,NR tidbit that Isaac randomly doing that was a reference to some Neil Young show they went to where he kept repeating the last part of a song over and over and they thought it was hilarious as well as amazing and so Isaac thought it would be funny to attempt that here as a reference to an inside joke that they had about that, with mixed results in his opinion, as you mention

A couple years ago this randomly popped up in my recommended and I loved it, but kind of forgot about the band after a while. When their first album came out I didn't really like it and was disappointed this song wasn't there. Now Ants is out and is instantly one of my favourite albums of all time.

i've come back here every month for the past 2 years and it still hits just as hard
I used to think this live performance couldn't be topped, then the studio version came out. Now I listen to this version with naive nostalgia, this might still be my favourite live performance on youtube.

It's such a gorgeous, complete song though. I don't think I could comprehend a more perfect album closer than this. I've seen them 3 times and somehow I'm still flawed with every listen. We are so lucky to be around for their breaking out

The intenstity of Issac's performance is enough for me to tolerate the recording artifacts and I've watched this video so many times that the voices at the start add to the atmosphere, to the point that it makes me feel like I'm actually there.
This is genuinely the closest thing to a gig I've experienced during lockdown, and I'm more than happy to have this immaculate performance indelibly linked to this strange period of my life.
