Note that the music used here is a stage / orchestra adaptation. The traditional karikázó music has different instrumentation.

Then what WAS it written for?
The dance is based on the steps used in karikazo dances and was choreographed to this piece of music. There should be an allowance made for artistic license. Perhaps it's not "ethnically" Hungarian, but it was still a favourite dance in many International folk dance sessions.
