    Thanks for the review and appreciating Iain Banks work. I would like to correct a couple of misconceptions for others who might read the novella after your review....... I dont see the the culture as space communism at all. The culture is a post-scarcity, unlimited energy society with very few if any rules. The culture rather than being a communist collective is much more a extreme libertarian, even anarchic society..... I understand banks to describe the culture as 'hippies with guns'..... The other mis-conception is the state of the art is set in late 70's Earth rather than the 80's or early 90's. All the best.

      I think assumptions about post-scarcity behaviour, both here and in Roddenberry Star Trek, are what I mean by "space communism".
