    Hi Simon, I notice in this vid (along with all others on youtube) the power wires magically are suddenly attached to the track. This is quite fiddly for a beginner and I wish you'd showed this , I struggled when testing out a set before presenting it to my son as I'm a beginner with n gauge and no videos or accompanying guide books with beginner track sets show how to connect up the power clips, they just assume you know what to do. Apart from this it's great. I just spent lots of time trying to figure out how to get power onto the track.

    I really like my N scale. It takes up so little room.

    That's a top tip about using a 9v battery to test your locos. Why didn't I think of that?

    Thanks very much for part 2 Simon :) A question for you on running in. Can this be done with DCC or must it be done on DC? Ian

    • @Poliss95
      @Poliss95 7 років тому +1

      If the loco doesn't have a decoder fitted, then run it in on DC. This will tell you if there's a problem with the mechanism. If you fit a decoder first and there's a problem with the loco, you won't know if it's the mechanism or the decoder that's faulty. If the loco is DCC fitted, then run it in on DCC. No need to remove the decoder.

      Thanks explorermap for the reply. Perhaps I was not clear. I will be starting my first layout soon and as such, I will be going with DCC right away, I see no point in using DC and converting later. So my question is, can I run a train in using DCC or do I need to use DC to run in and then fit a decoder?

    • @edmorris631
      @edmorris631 7 років тому +1

      I don't know about other manufacturers, but Dapol recommend that their locos are run in on DC. The advantage is that you know that the loco works out of the box. If you fit the loco with the decoder first and then it doesn't work, you won't know if it is the decoder or the loco that is the cause. They also tell you to use an "N Gauge Controller"; apparently some DC controllers supply too much power for their N Gauge locos. So, I picked up an old Graham Farish DC controller very cheaply off eBay for the purpose of running in my locos. I actually have a seperate circle of track for running in purposes, but I don't see any reason you couldn't use the same track and just swap controllers. Hope this helps.

      Thanks Ed. I got the potential fault part from explorermap's post but interesting that some controllers provide too much power. Surely an electrical device only pulls the power it requires? Sounds like I need to look for a DC controller anyhow for running in. Many thanks for the response :)

      As others have said it can be done on DCC but if there's an issue with running it may be the chip or it may be the loco...I'd be tempted to do a quick '9v battery trick' test to make sure it works, then chip it and run it in on DCC 👍

    Can you have sound in N scale ?

      Kato produces a sound system but it's primarily aimed at Japanese trains.

    I did kill a locomotive once and it took forever for my bumb ass to figure out that that's what it was 👍🤣👍

    Nice video. I'd change the description of DCC v D.C. As it's not DCC track but DCC power vs D.C. Power. The track is the same.

      Thanks, I know what you mean...the track doesn't 'know' if its DC or DCC 🤔 👍

    As someone who's done and n gauge for quite a while on and off please don't waste anymore money on this Arnold Hornby rubbish as you'll only be wasting your money for something that's never going to work properly always going to be underperforming and and Tooling that is more out of date than the time it takes you to put videos out that's not meant as an insult that meant as a bit of a punt please don't be offended by that I've watched your videos many times and unlike the cheap trash that Hornby makes you should put something half decent together so for your Sake please don't cry anymore this Arnold rubbish yes some of the other brands are much more expensive I know but they are so much better for your money I recently picked up a Kato N Gauge Eurostar in the new E300 blue livery and plus a expansion pack to take it from an 8 car set set up to to 12 car and it's amazing and I only paid £180 for the whole thing in the end highly recommend that if you can get the money for it
